All my designer suit jackets come from Goodwill $3 each. I've had them at least 15 years. Made well. Machine wash then hang to dry. I've paired them with pants, skirts and dresses too. Classics. Never go out of style. Love them.

Heads up for those who are new to thrifting: I've been thrifting for 20+ years and never had an issue with bugs, so don't be frightened by the idea of them. You might come across a dead bug every now and then, but live ones are rare. Just don't get nasty looking cloth furniture, and be vigilant about cleaning hats and scarves. Or, just don't get certain items, just like MaCenna. ☺️

How do you clean your hats?
@m.thompson3919
@m.thompson3919 4 жыл бұрын
@@tpine2504 If it's something soft like a beanie, those can go in the washing machine. Some caps can handle that as well. For firmer hats like snapbacks and fedoras, you can soak/wash hats by hand in the sink with some hot water and detergent. Rinse it off with cold water to help it maintain it's shape. (Optional: After you rinse off the hat, dry it with a hair dryer on hot to help disinfect it even more. Just keep the hair dryer in motion so you don't overheat the fabric.) If the hat is made of leather, I would recommend googling instructions on how to clean it. Leather tends to be more high maintenance than other fabrics, and every type of leather has different cleaning instructions.

I keep CV 48 aerosol on hand for any type of insects , this is a Barn Spray . It also comes in a convenient automotive timed sprayer so if you want you can hang it in s garage and leave any questionable items in the garage to be treated Over several days .

I've been thrift shopping forever and never had an issue either, I have a matching to wash right and sofas, so I put things in my garage and wash things in there before bringing it in the house. You can even rent a machine at lows or home depot, of course if the items are worth it

There's something about 'display books' that really bothers me. I guess it's the epitome of superficial to only want a book for what it looks like on display, not what's inside it!

The "what's it worth to you" advice was sooo good! I paid 14$ for a woodturned vase at Value Village and it was my favorite buy ever, I bought a huge fake bamboo tree for 12,50$ on a 50% sale in another thrift store, did I overpay for that vase?! Sure! But it was still worth it to ME. ;)

Yes! That's what I was saying to myself too. I often pass on items that I like simply because the items are more than I'm willing to pay. Unfortunately I find that some thrift stores price the items far too high. I'd like to ask them if they want to sell it or store it? 🤔🤔👎👎

Instead of ruining a piece by drying it on high heat, use a steamer instead. Steam will kill a lot of bugs and bacteria. We use steam all the time.

Autumn Harbour I’ve heard that sunlight helps??? Plus if you are able to leave it outside the smells will leave you know? Not sure if sunlight is true but I’ve just seen some stuff about it!
@erindixon2877
@erindixon2877 4 жыл бұрын
@atumnharbor, the heat of the sun will probably not get rid of the smell. Hanging a garment in the shade and letting it air out for a while works but you can do the same thing in your home on a shower rod. The point is to get air flow around the garment so the scent has a chance to decompose. Washing an item and hanging to dry works too if the item is washable. One other tip: to remove rust, use lemon juice on the rust spots and hang the item in a sunny window. It may take a few repeated applications of lemon juice but the rust will disappear. Rinse or wash the item in cold water to remove the lemon juice. This is the gentlest way I know for rust removal.
@FlagGov
@FlagGov 3 жыл бұрын
@@Autumn-zt1yx Wool isn't fond of heat and friction, but sometimes you can get away with using one if you don't also use the other. Test steam on an inconspicuous spot and let it dry completely before steaming the whole piece.

I know. I love that people at the thrift store leave things behind because they don't like them or the price and they are just waiting there for me to get them. I seem to have a taste very different from the mainstream and have a lot of sight to see items past their condition at the moment when I find them. And my thrift stores here have a lot of odd items which is a bonus.

Great job on the lamp! I always enjoy seeing your makeovers and creativity! Just an idea for cleaning old rugs, use a steam cleaner after baking soda and vacuuming. Also vinegar can get out old stains out of dishes and glasses, if you let it soak overnight! Another thing you can use is a mixture of water and tea tree oil and spray on wicker. Not sure if this is okay if you have animals, maybe check what the internet says about this.

I love thrifting for pretty much everything: clothes, shoes, jewelry, purses, books, wall art, home decor, and dishes! I don't really thrift flip because I am not crafty like that but I do just like finding great items at the thrift store as is or in really great condition! So, I agree with all your reasons why thrifting can be a an awesome thing to do! I see it as a really fun treasure hunt if you will! The only item I would "flip" is a framed piece of wall art where I could spray paint it a different color- I regret not picking up this one piece that would have been for my daughter's room. The wood frame was painted a light green but the art itself was pretty pinks and blues. I didn't even think of it at the time to spray paint the wood part white but now I know and will consider that the next time I see a piece like that at the thrift store! That is a great tip about heating or freezing thrifted items to kill germs but I have never done that and have fared fine so far. I have just cleaned items with sanitizing wipes and Lysol spray! I am so jealous of your flips; I wish I could be just as crafty but never caught on to it

Loved the video, Macenna! ♥ Just a couple of FYIs - you can totally wash baskets; just don't leave them soaking. They do smell funny until they dry, but it works fine. Also, washing smelly fabric in really hot water will kill germs, but it will not necessarily take out odours. Hot water can set smells. I wash everything in cold water and it works great, saves money, and is better for the fabric. If that doesn't take out smells, the best way is to hang them outside for a few hours. Nothing like sunshine and fresh air to get rid of bad odours. :) Hope that's helpful!

Plus add vinegar in normal fabric softener place or time. Not only is it great for smells but reduces static like a softener sheet or liquid it's healthier for you and don't worry after dryer the vinegar smell is gone!

@@soysan34 you are right! I always use vinegar in place of fabric softener. Vinegar is good for so many things and is all natural...and cheap! :D

I believe that metal thing was some kind of fencing or animal trap, and you legit made it look like a store bought light! As much as I want to be good to DIY crafts I don't have the creativity for it like you do. Good job!

Every Goodwill runs different sales on different days. The tall wire basket is used for holding canes and umbrellas by the front door. Thank you for sharing✌💛☺

Worth it to you was great advice! I bought a world market tray (it was pink but it still had the original price sticker on it) for 4.99 and the original price was $30! With a little cleaning and painting it is now my coffee table center piece and I love it!

Love the pendant light! I think the cage like basket could be for wet umbrellas or umbrellas in general 😊. Usually placed outside the door where you can leave your umbrellas...

I buy baskets every time I go to my favorite thrift store. I hand wash or if it’s a thick large basket I hit it with water hose and let air dry. They always dry okay. You have the best ASMR voice too 🤣❤️

Love your videos! As for baskets I buy I totally submerge them in hot soapy water and let them dry naturally and spray with lysol and I have never damaged a basket. Try it!

I always wash any cane items in warm soapy water. Use a small brush with soft long bristles to get into crevices. Work fairly quickly. Don’t let soak in the water as this will soften the cane and it will loose its shape. Water hyacinth baskets will get mushy and fall apart. Rinse in water and put outside in sun if possible .You can speed things up by using an old towel to wipe it down first.

@@soysan34 that's great advice. Most people don't realize that sunshine is a great natural disinfectant. If I get ill, I make sure to keep all the curtains open and get outside in the fresh air as much as I am able and I always feel much better, way quicker.

The cage is the top part of a squirrel proof cage that fits over top of a bird feeder! There's a bottom part that usually comes with it. It's part of the On Guard cage from Wild Birds Unlimited. definitely pricey, but I love love love feeding the birds so I have one! Great job repurposing yours!
