Here in Germany we use OEM Lupo cupholders for retrofitting as they have exactly the size of a radio. They have a little extra box above the cupholder tray. No extra mods needed. Plug and play operation. Had this in my mk2. But it got popular and the part is no longer available new so used part prices skyrocketed.

I had to do this to my new beetle. 1. I didn't have that beautiful programmer. 2. I didn't have that super sweet plasma cutter.

I have two problems with this, that you'll likely understand immediately. That time when someone accelerated way too hard in a mk4, and spilled a giant drink on the centre console. That time you realize that zee Germans may have been onto something by making the mkiii have rubbish cup holders. Pretty dope mod though.
