I just stumbled onto this. First off - what a ton of work and funds also, many thanks for your commitment! Second - the custom buckers hold up really well in all the sound samples. If I had a set, based in this video, I'd leave them alone. Third - if I had to choose the top 3 Doyles, Rewinds, CustomBuckers. Fourth - if I had any set of these in a guitar I'd leave them in and just focus on improving my playing. Thanks, again for all your work!

To my ears the Custom Buckers held up very well against all those aftermarket pickups. I'd just keep them if I was deciding for myself. I did like the Rewinds quite a bit and I was surprised at how much I didn't like the Wizz. The Wizz sound muffled at times and had to much low end for my liking. Great comparison, Very Well Done!

Thanks for watching! The CB's are great pickups, they command a premium in the used market for a reason! I don't think there's a wrong answer in the bunch, particularly because in the real world you can always adjust the amp controls to compensate for whatever you might think a particular set is lacking. There are some less obvious intangibles that some sets offer though, which I'll be covering in the followup video.

Rewind all the way, there's just this openness and clarity to them I like, it's more obvious when you listen through a good pair of headphones.

Definitely recommend listening with great headphones, as we're mostly talking about nuances here and not super dramatic differences. I'd argue they all sound good, but with good headphones you'll probably find a set that tickles your fancy the most. ReWind's are not a bad choice!

All of these are extremely good. But something about the treble clarity in the neck pickup of the Doyle and the overtones of the Doyle bridge pickup matches what I hear in my head. Just amazing how good all of these pickup manufacturers have gotten.
@stilllifewithguitar1843 жыл бұрын
Super interesting comparison. What I liked most depended on what amp you were using. Honestly, I thought the Gibsons while maybe not the best across the board in all cases were the most consistently good sounding, followed by the Doyles. The others had a high end that got less attractive with some amps like the Vox and the Princeton.

Just got Doyle Coils installed in my 2022 Custom shop 59 LP which had custom buckers. Holy Sh%!! I’ll use a few words etc. to describe what I hear and feel. Vintage purity, bell like, clear up and down the volume dials, less compressed, cuts through better, can’t stop playing. Also I gotta give Max over at Doyle Coils props for helping me work through an installation issue on my end. He couldn’t have been more helpful. Also I got the pickups and the harness for what it’s worth. My pots that came with the guitar were 440 /460k. These are like 545.

All sounded really good. Very well done comparison. I'm sure you will get a lot of feedback on different favorites. I prefer the aged, raw vintage sound of an original 50's PAF personally. For that reason, the Doyle and WIZZ were on the top of the list for me. The WIZZ seemed to have a little more breakup and string to string definition accompanied. Again, personal preference. I'm sure many would be happy with any of these especially with a little amp adjustment or the addition of your favorite pedal

Very nice comparison! To my ears I could hear a touch of difference in the Doyle Coil’s which could be contributed to the lack of covers. The Rewind T-tops sounded very good, as did the Wizz. The stock Custombuckers were not as articulate to my ears, but that could be due to them being slightly hotter wound than most of the others. There were definitely spots where each pickup shines and shows that they are all great sounding options. That being said I believe that overall the Righteous RAF were the best performer of this lot, clear and clean when needed but with great clarity when playing overdriven.

Great job! Really appreciate the hard work. It seems to me that amps play a significant part as well. The lower the gain, the more significant the tonal characteristics. I used to have a set of early Wizz installed on one R7 so I am more familiar with the tone. So as to the Custom Bucker as my current Les Paul is a CC#15 with one (even though they seems to be different on CCs). During the test on PT15, I prefer Doyle Coil over everyone else; however, moving over to Two Rock, Vox, Mesa, Matchless, and Fender, Wizz starts to shine in my personal opinion. There is an advantage on Doyle Coil as it is without cover so it sounds more open and bright consequently. After listening to all of them, my choice will be Wizz and Doyle Coil. Just my two cents.

For starters amazing video shootout possibly one of the best in the tube imho! Your channel should and must get more attention! Secondly I really like the Doyle coils I believe that the extra presence and airiness is due to that they are uncoverd! Also I was extremely pleased by the sound of the T-Tops! Gibson custom buckers and wizz come last on my list not that they’re sounding bad but they don’t have that bite and spiky top end that I like! Finally I would like to do a shootout between those boutique pickups with some higher end pickups from the big brands for example Seymour Duncan’s Seth lovers or dimarzio anniversary P.A.F.! And lastly take your time and check out the P.A.F. from mojo tone I’ve got the 59 clone in my Les Paul standard and it truly makes the guitar sing! A few interesting take aways on this for me… man the amps make a difference. It was interesting to see how consistent the Doyle coils were from amp to amp, where the Wizz would sound amazing on one amp and sound like a dud on another, specifically sounded not the best on the Mesa and at times on the JM, but sounded wonderful on the fender brown and tweed, and sounded good on the chieftain. The rewinds sounded consistent across the board. The RAFs sound ok on some amps, and then not as good on others. The gibsons would win for me on some amps, and then not so much on others. It seemed like they followed the same trends for me on the amps they like when compared to the Wizz. This was very informative, I enjoyed the presentation and the playing was spot on. Pretty seamless my friend. Good work!

Thank you for the hard work and effort invested in this. I have a 2018 R9 that I am looking to swap the custom buckers out of. They aren't bad in my guitar but, I want a little more clarity and balance. If I were going to choose from these the Doyle Coils would be my pick. I am also looking at a set of 8 bomb custom Goldies. @Yeatzee Guitar Ibam very much leaning towards the Doyle Coils after hearing this. As I have the same philosophy as you. Starting out with a bright tone and using tone controls if I want to ease up on the high frequency content. A dark sounding guitar just doesn't do it for me. I bought a Hamer once, similar in build to a les paul. Sounded very nice by itself but, it was too warm to cut through a live mix and I had to return it. Your Gold Top sounds wonderful.

Custom Buckers sounded ok in the Video, playing them in real life has always had some weird upper mids in my experience...

Thanks for this video. I like the Doyles best. I mainly play geezer rock with plenty of non-harsh crunch and jangly cleans. While I liked much about the mid-fluenced Custombuckers, they did seem to over-excel at congestion and compression which might be a plus for heavy classic rockers.

There are differences, all sound pretty good... the Gibson's might be my least favorite, but man, potted or not, they were not bad. Fantastic job, man. Great sound, great editing, all around professional job...unlike my rinky-dink iPhone clips. One thing I’ve noticed while listening back to my own videos is that (not shockingly) video recordings don’t always capture the full in-the-room experience for a given pickup set. Did you feel that there was anything significant that didn’t quite make it onto film? Based on these clips, I’m partial to the Doyle’s, Rewinds, and Wizz’s...but again, curious if there’s a missing dimension anywhere.
@YeatzeeGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt! No video recordings don't capture everything, I'm going to talk about some of the more intangibles or things you can't easily show in this sort of video in the follow up so stay tuned for that. I will say, of the sets featured they all sounded pretty accurate to what I heard and felt. Of the bunch the Wizz set were the ones that felt and sounded more special in person than they do listening back to the recordings. Not sure why that is because nothing changed between them, I think it has more to do with the tonal characteristics being different from the others so when compared side by side they come across a bit different than they would in isolation.

These comparisons always become mind-boggling after a while. You did a really nice job though! Overall I liked the Doyle's the best. They seemed very balanced, open and the most woody-sounding. They seem to have a nice growl too which I appreciate. The Wizz were really nice too and were a very close second. The Custombuckers fell somewhere towards my least favorite sounding narrow and veiled. I wonder though how much not having covers on the Doyle's effected my preference for them. I'm curious as to what magnet type they have. I also wonder how the Wizz set would sound with A2 magnets (Wizz gives you magnet options) which are my preferred magnet type. FYI - I edited some of my comments after listening to this video again a few times using much higher quality speakers than were originally used the first time. The Doyle's still came out on top, but the Wizz pickups moved way up and the Custombuckers moved down.

Also I don't know of many people that play Les Paul's totally clean / play jazz with a LP so although there are undoubtedly some that do it's probably the minority that would be interested in this sort of video. Still, I'll keep that in mind if there's another pickup video down the line.

Doyle Coils sounded the best to me.. They were however the only uncovered pickups. I wonder if that contributes to the clarity.

Wizz and Rewind for top spot. Slight preference for the Rewind maybe...listening test is one thing, the feel under your own fingers is the final test. I'm surprised at all the likes for the Doyles....they were my least favorite by far!

I've went down the rabbit hike of all these "boutique " builders , and at the end besides one set of fralins , in my other 20 some odd guitars I always go back to DiMarzio or set our Duncan .

I've heard a few people say similarly. Sometimes the more affordable guys make stuff that checks your boxes, nothing wrong with that!

Nice informative video, I always wonder why everyone in these videos use so much treble....

You think I was too bright in all these demo's? I thought I covered the basis pretty well with all sorts of tones. We all have different preferences though :) One mans perfect is anothers muddy or shrill

Honestly they’re all pretty similar. I mean of course there’s a percentage or two difference in them all as well but generally all these pickups had similar characteristics that honestly your Gibson’s had as well. All amazing tho !! Might have kept me from buying anything at all !! Ha!! Some electric city are on my radar tho !!!

I pike the brightest ones...so to me that was the Doyle's Coils, Rewind TTops, and Wizz. Wizz sounded a bit too strong ....maybe u could have lowered the height on them? The Wizz still had the top end though so I did like them. I guess it depends on what you want to do with them.

In a LIVE band situation with Bass & Drummer going at it You would Never Know the Different with Any off them .... the Difference is so Minimal

Could probably say the same thing about an epiphone vs CS LP. Can the player hear or feel a difference? Will that difference affect how they perform? I judge by that standard, the audience couldn't care less what I play. I'm much happier with the DC's over the CB's, so I play the LP more as a result. That means I'm more comfortable with the guitar and I think it sounds significantly better which makes me a more confident player. All of that effects LIVE. If you disagree that's fine, at least I saved you some money! 😉

@@YeatzeeGuitar No I agree that if the Player can Hear & Feel the Difference Then Those are the Pickups They should Use .. It's People On YOU TUBE listening on I phones That say they can Tell The Difference, That I have a Problem With I'm Listening on Yamaha HS 7 Studio Speakers and It's Still Close So actually I don't Disagree with you at all

@@MrPinkStrat I can certainly hear a difference in the video, as can apparently most viewers BUT the missing component which is the feel from the player is not discussed in this video. I talk about my impressions as the player in my follow up video, also on my channel. Check it out

I am listening to the recording and cannot hear a significant difference, BUT I can hear a gret Les Paul through a great amp . The top end reminds me of a Les Paul custom with ebony fretboard 🤔

For some it's a massive difference, for others it's minimal. All up to the ears of the listener, but I will say as a player you notice more than being seperate from the guitar listening over KZbin. Check out my follow up video I did on my Fav PAF, I talk about what I experienced as the player which is a bit different. And thanks! It's a lovely guitar with great top end clarity

Great video as always and all those pickups sound good but I think I prefer the Gibsons and if you're interested in selling those rewind t-tops let me know not that I think they're the best we just like to have some T- top clones

The t tops were the only ones I didn’t like. What I hear is when you’re strumming softly they’re close to the others but with a hard strum there’s a wall that they don’t create more sound/volume/distortion but squash the high end into an unpleasant tone. Hard to describe

After spending so much money on my CS LP I am not spending more money for pup changes. I will make them work some how. If it doesn't work I will never buy a Gibson CS again. Gibson is only company who can't re-create their past or improve upon them but other manufacturers can make better LP and PAF clones. We still buy them. Only thing that Gibson still good at is making great 61 SGs. To be honest my custom buckers are unpotted are not tat bad. Needed some tweaking but works ok so far.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with Gibsons, or to put it another way, it's hard to find fault enough to want replace them with any of the others tested so far. Okay some of the others are brighter which may help with live work, but for recording the CBs sound just like a Les Paul should. I would be worried about thinning my sound out too much with some of the aftermarket ones.

What I've found is that a clear tone is easier to use in all situations because it's easier to roll back some brightness then it is to add it in. Rolling back the guitars tone works great with the brighter pickups to take the edge off, no amp adjustments required! 🙂
