My vote goes for the Doyle Coils too but , to be fair with the other pickups, you should have tested them with their covers as it can affect the sound.

Yeah more a function of me not owning a good enough soldering iron and not wanting to damage a set of $500 pickups. I do plan to do a video showing the sound of the covers on and off at some point, just waiting on one more set to come in.

That “air” and “chime” from the Doyle’s is definitely the lack of covers. Having removed and replaced covers on half a dozen pickups, it’s a sure fire way to get that chime back into the mix.

We'll see how much, planning on doing a mini comparison with them on and off soon. Fwiw I know 3 other people that have bought them with covers and all have an extra air and chime to them vs other PAF's they've tried. Ymmv

I purchased a used Les Paul on Reverb about a year ago that came with Doyle Coils. I've recently come down with a bad case of G.A.S. (gear addiction syndrome) and have been looking for other pickups to swap out...until I found your videos. The pickups you demoed here were some I was looking at trying out, and thankfully I agree with your assessment on the Doyle Coils... So I will be keeping them in my Les Paul. Thank you for the video because there's no telling how much money and time you've saved me! Subbed and looking forward to more videos.

Pro Tip for Everyone = Your existing Humbuckers is Good Enough, if you want better tone, just make adjustments on Pickup height, tilt the pickups, pole pieces, or change the EQ of the AMP or get an EQ pedal. This will save people money better suited for guitar lessons. Stop chasing your dream tone and make music with what you have.

Such a great video. I can tell you put a ton of work into it. I had a set of Wizz PAFs in my Les Paul for a while and found that when uncovered they added a ton of top end. Almost more so than when I experimented with removing covers on other pickups. My main amp at the time had a ton of top end so I didn’t end up keeping them, but this is making me want to grab another set for my R9.

I’d love to see that video. I’ve got a not-so-small hoard of PAF pickups both replica and original. I have three sets of ReWind pickups with the NOS wire upgrade (PAF-1, Low Output, and a Low Output neck w/ PAF-1 bridge set), a set of regular wire ReWind Pat# replicas, a set of regular wire ReWind ‘58, Wizz Premium Clones, Doyle Coils, Throbak SLE-101, Throbak DT-102, Tom Holmes, Fralin Pure PAF, Clive Brown, and an original set of short mag 1961 PAFs (the set I kept after owning about a dozen real PAFs). I’ve also played owned and sold dozens more from the big name boutique guys down to the high end boutique winders. Each and every single one becomes more present, touch sensitive, and open when the covers are removed. They also become more microphonic which allows them to pick up more of the finger / pick noise resulting in gorgeous texture. But the do tend to lose some of the wordiness and sweetness when the covers are removed. I’d love to hear the ReWind ‘58 set compared to the Doyle Coils uncovered. I think they’d be very similar but with the ReWinds having a touch more muscle and the Doyle’s having a touch more clarity (especially in the neck pickup).

Custombuckers are not consistent from year to year. I have a set from 2018 that are amazing. I had a set from 2013 that were so microphonic as to be unusable at club volume. It is hard to generalize about a pickup that seems to have changed quite a bit in just a few years.........the good ones are good-at least in my experience which is limited to just a few sets. I do not know how good they would be in a les paul . They are somewhat underpowered and do not really push the amp and they are basically a custombucker that was modified for the characteristics of hollow and semi hollow electrics they are a great pickup but not what you would think of for a les paul I have seen people comment about trying them in les Paul's and some thought they were kind of muddy in an lp. Hollow and semi hollow guitars respond better with darker pickups I have found . The Mhs are like a middle ground between a custombucker and a 57 classic.

Another nice comparison and obviously you put a lot of work into making the vid. Again, I preferred the Doyle's. Regarding the Custombuckers...I have them in a 2018 R8 and 2021 R9 and they sound very different between the guitars. In the R8 they sound bright, raw and lively...which I like. In the R9 however they sound, as you have described, like the tone is stuck in the guitar and is blocked from being transferred to the amp. They sound pretty good, but I would have expected them to sound a lot better since this particular R9 has an incredibly vibrant acoustic tone. As you said, they sound soft or flat, lacking dynamics. I'm wondering if Gibson changed something in the 3-year period between the guitars' birth dates. But I also believe that pickups need to be matched to the particular guitar. Wood and other variables make a difference and you need to find a synergy between the guitar and the pickups. However, I have '57 Classics in 3 different guitars (a 2001 R9, a 2001 R7 BB Custom and a 1997 ES-335 Dot) and they sound amazing in all of them. I know '57 Classics don't seem to get a lot of love in the guitar community, but I'm just sayin'...

If you are PAF purist then covers are necessary part of that sound. Taking them off changes not only the top end and perceived output but also changes way the middle tones sound. Without cover they sound more HiFi but less PAF alike. That little bit of plinky metallic sound will be gone and top end will shine more. Same pickups with covers sound simply more vintage alike for the lack of the better word. 40 years ago I was preferring no covers regarding looks and even tone. But those were different times and every guitar player was stuffing his open type humbuckers in your face. Nowadays I do prefer covers for the look on all vintage guitars. Although I have to say that in this case that double cream looks damn sexy. Well I am a bit of a Gold Top fan myself. I have Murphy Lab first batch R7. Got to say yours look damn fine. Anyways I am not sure what Custombuckers they have used in your M2M guitar but in current CS guitars those Custombuckers III are unpotted most of the times. How do I know? Well disregarding that it states on the tin I have opened them and I saw no wax in there. So why did I open completely new pickups on completely new guitar that costs way to much? Well to change their hookup wire. In my process of getting most of the Gibson guitar made after the Golden Era (50-ies and beginning of 60-ies) I change completer harness. Lucky they still use good input jack and the toggle switch and relatively got pots. But they fail checking the pots value and often solder in way to low and even out of the tolerance pots. I have measured even 420K instead of 500K :( And worst insult is what they call vintage braided wire. Instead of going with proper dual layer isolation wire from the same Company as they have used in 50-ies they are going with trash braided wire that eats up tone and lowers down the output. It sucks the tone out of the harness. So I mostly make my own harness with selected pots and proper oil in paper caps and proper wire. I have talked to few custom winders and they all use same brand. Proper capacitance wire. Sad thing is that it is not even that expensive. They charge you 6 to 10K for Murphy Lab CS guitar and can't spare like 10 bucks on proper wire? So you can buy proper handmade harness and it will make a huge difference. But if you want to hear how the Gibson pickups actually sound you need to change their hook up wire. It is a job that is not for everyone though. It requires removing the crew pole peace's coil off the base and some nice soldering and isolation of the solder points. Lot of guitar tech's do not want to do that. Thy do sound way better after it. More details, more output. Simply they sound closer to the boutique offerings.

Fascinating never heard anyone talk about change in tone from the pickup wire!

@@YeatzeeGuitar proper braided wire has two isolation layers. First layer is white and most often from fake silk called rayon. Second layer is your standard cotton, most often waxed. Proper one is made by Gavitt and that’s exactly the type every boutique pickup winder uses for PAF inspired humbuckers. I have personally spoke with two of them and they have confirmed. Thorbak makes really great replica PAF’s with attention to detail that’s almost insane. He replicated even lines on bobbins that you normally do not see. He has original winders as well. He uses Gavitt. Gibson uses cheap cotton only isolation. You can check it up there is no white layer next to the inside wire. You can measure capacitance if you have good meter. Their braided wire has way to much capacitance. In length of like 10 inches in the Hookup wire length (two inches are inside the pickup) I have measured 200 Ohm difference in perceived resistance. That comes from the way how digital multimeters measure resistance. Analog meter would see no difference because it works with constant signal and battery. Digital meters use pulses and those get triggered by capacitance. So 8,2K bridge Customcucker III measures 8,4K after the hookup wire change. Way bigger difference comes from the harness because in the Les Paul you have toggle switch and pretty long runs of the wire. Gibson just takes 500 K Ohm CTS pots and solder them in. Though they have tolerances and some batches are really bad. I saw 420K pot in Custom Shop Gibson guitar. That’s just sad. Low resistance like that combined with high capacitance wire and your guitar is simply muddy. You loose details and output because signal leaks true the parallel capacitance into the ground. With good harness guitar starts sounding like someone took off blanket that was covering speaker cabinet. If you still have stock one go order high quality harness you will not believe it. It brings guitars way closer to vintage sounding instrument. Then you can understand why expel with good amplifiers and guitars start with 8 on Volume and 6 or 7 on the tone. BTW on PRS clinic I have asked Paul Read Smith about wire. He is genius. Not only that he know how much difference it makes but he knew how much pF per inch has the wire that they use. Gotta love that man. He knows why and how. He has forgotten knowledge. There is an idea for the video content. Your guitar before and after the harness. If you have any question why or how something works just shoot. Odds are I can explain. Especially stuff about tube amplifiers. I have designed few of them from the scratch. But I build for friends and friends of my friends only. Mostly point to point boutique stuff.

Pop those covers off the custombuckers and see your head explode. Not a fair comparison imho. I think the custombuckers would be a lot closer with the covers off

Custombuckers are pretty inconsistent it seems. I've played one amazing set and a few like the set I had here. Ymmv but without covers they wouldn't meet the Doyle Coils here I don't believe.

just pulling the covers off bumps up the midrange and high end frequencies dramatically. i do not like any humbuckers with covers on them..They always sound muffled and dark to me.

The issues with custombuckers can be solved with magnet swaps . . An A5 or unorieted A5 in the bridge or the neck will fix the middle position tone . Even leaving the neck A3 or switching it to A2 combined with A5 or unorieted A5 in the bridge will give a great middle tone .A5 clears up the neck quite well and will pair good with the stock A3 on the bridge. The thing about custombuckers is that they are more in line with the earlier pafs form 57 and 58 then they are with 59 pafs .

No. They’re potted with wax. Magnet swaps won’t fix that.

The Doyles jumped at me from the beginning. Gibson seemingly still dont get it. It is quite apparent that they have a tough time making an "authentic" Paf copy of their own pickup.

Uncovered pickups will always have more high end and be more articulate than covered pickups. Not really a fair shootout, but a very high quality video otherwise!

For older guitar players, all the distorted, what people might call "rock" tones. are irrelevant. If I can't hear what a PU sounds like completely clean, I haven't heard it at all.

The way to get that vintage sound is to back off on the overdrive. Any vintage wind humbucker is fine. If you dial up enough drive that there is no longer any struggle you have overdone it. Those old blues guys had personality in their playing because they were naked. Albert king and B B King sounded as good with T Tops as with PAF
