I’ve owned the King Seiko KSK for two weeks now, and it hasn’t left my wrist. I’m so so impressed with it, the finishing is wonderful, the way it catches the light and the overall quality has won me over. Some commentators have criticised the movement but it runs perfectly fine to me and keeps good time. I’ve tried on plenty of Grand Seikos and actually I’m pleased I spent my money on the KSK instead (and I was lucky enough to find it used for a big discount!). This is a lot of watch for the money…it feels high end, and yet is so discrete and classy.

But it was Grand Seiko that won the battle and continue develop until today. I love this King Seiko because it is an reissue, I love vintage watches. If you were comparing this KS reissue with modern GS, I would get this too because I like vintage. But if you go back in time, vintage GS and KS has similar design really. That said, vintage GS has this kind of case too.

Buying used at a deep discount was the way to go! Congrats on your business savvy, and having the discipline to wait for someone else to throw their hard earned money on msrp, then regret their purchase, while you wait patiently for them to chuck it on the secondary market, then swooping down to retrieve the spoils at real market value. I have a small collection and two vintage Seikos from the 70s are part of it: a Bullhead JDM 6138-0040 circa1975 and a Cevert 6139-6002, circa 1973, both original and in good condition. Agree for most of us 3k on a watch is just too much . The Sarb also has a more appealing lug/case . There is definitely a market at £300 to £400 for the Sarb but without Seiko filling it micro brands are . Seiko now is wanting closer to £1000 for a Sarb like watch , and unfortunately there is so much Swiss competition with ETA movements at that price.

There’s no doubt the SARB was *good* for the money and that’s about it. Other than that, it’s now this mythical, over-hyped unicorn. For $300-$500 you’re much better off looking towards brands like Tissot or Hamilton, plus you’ll get a far superior movement.

Earlier this year, I set out to get a grail of mine; the Grand Seiko SBGR261. After months of taking on extra jobs, saving, and selling various things I don't use anymore, In June I finally went to an AD and purchased my Grand Seiko. While I was there, they happened to have a King Seiko in stock and I tried it on. I fell in love with it! The sharp, angular case and lugs caught the light beautifully and I loved the way it fit on wrist. I ALMOST abandoned buying the more expensive GS right then and there to get "The King." In the end, I went with the GS (and couldn't be happier), but I would venture to say if I had seen this video before hand, I MIGHT have the King Seiko sitting on my wrist right now!

Great video as usual and a stunning watch . KS is also an important part in Seiko history . Just a mistake in the video : the new KS is a re- issue of the reference 44-9990 with the strong lugs and not the 4402-8000 as shown in the pic in the video which has smaller lugs

Since you asked, I had a Grand Seiko SBGR031 from 2005 until 2021. It had understated, almost stealth looks and the crown guards made it a sporty 3 hand watch; particularly stealthy as SEIKO and not GS was emblazoned on the dial. The watch grew on me with ownership because of it's quality and craftmanship. In 2021 I could not resist "upgrading" to the SBGR257, which is essentially the same watch, but with a display back and the newer 9S65A movement. It is my favourite watch and I have owned many, vintage and new across most price ranges. It is unique as a sporty 3 hand watch in the Grand Seiko range and IMHO worthy of a review.

The movement inside, the 6L35, is actually an evolution of well-known 4L35 movement. It is a design that could be find even in some watches under the Seiko's high-end Credor brand, as well as a relatively obscure, but nevertheless fantastic Swiss-licensed independent movement Soprod a10. All in all, great watch and terrific movement!

After a glance at the balance wheel assembly, the 6L35 has a beat corrector arm along with gross & fine rate adjustment like an ETA 2894. But unlike the ETA, they're accessible, not buried under the automatic works. So that's a bonus when regulating. Just a technical detail that caught my eye.

Reliable movement, Zaratsu polishing, great size, thin case, great high end looking dial, great history, date window and decent water resistance.
