JJ and I build a micro survival kit in an altoids size tin. We raid my junk drawer and take a field trip to the dollar store to stock it full of potentially life saving supplies.

I would ditch the ulu and add a victorinox camper. Btw charcloth or charred punktförmige helps to start fires with slightly damp materials, you just need quite a bit of it. I also wrap a bit of waxed jute twine around my minibics. Saves fuel.
@ONThree
@ONThree Жыл бұрын
The camper is pretty bulky if I remember correctly. It would be pretty dang handy but you would have to sacrifice other tools. Great idea on the twine around the bic!

@@ONThree the camper is not very bulky. It got the two blades, saw bottle opener and can opener on one side, awl and corkscrew on the other and the tweezers, toothpick combo. So only three layers. And the saw is worth the weight in gold, as is the awl. Just ask Felix Immler .

Awesome ROOSTER ROOST....My is called the Boys Bunker lol...I guess that's how we Men , Nest....we name our treeforts..LOL 5:34 .. I love my ULU....I've used it on cutting game , fish, Veggies , roots, Meat for cooking, cutting cordage cutting, debarking sticks for traps, spring traps, dead fall triggers, bird snares etc , I can spark a ferro rod easily and make a fire..the only thing I wish I could do with it, is make a blanket cape pin from it... I love my ulu. 2:14 ...Jason , you can cut & peel the Black coating off your bic lighter, so you can see , how much fuel you have inside your bic, when you hold it up to light. I also recommend that , you put some tape (ducttape) around your trigger , so it won't be accidently pressed and you loose fuel. 2:35... If you don't have a BITs & BOPs BiN (housing, for your extra small stuff) ...You ain't a true Survivalist..LOL 3:25...Bankline #12 or #36 is more than enough for a survival tin kit, i would say. Bankline #36 has 3 main strands and the breaking point of 340 lbs..double it up you have 480lbs breaking point. Amazon price is $37 cad. Bankline # 12 has a breaking point of 106 lbs . Amazon price is $41 cad. Technora Composite Survival Rope 600lb Breaking Strength is 8 times stronger than steel and 3 times stronger than fiberglass, polyester or nylon yarns. Technora Composite Survival Rope 600lb is Highly resistant to acids, alkalis and organic solvents; not vulnerable to damage caused by steam or sea water Amazon is selling Technora survival rope for $30 canadian. 4:09 ... Spider wire is pretty good also... from 8 lb to 80 lb line. Great for trip lines, spring snares, i've stitched up my coat, tent and my hiking kicks with spider wire and of course fishing and net making. 6:48... Use your fingers for a whistle or you can diy a whistle from a hollow suma branch. 9:45... Purification tablets are small and compact. I've seen, some survivalists, boil water in a plastic clear bag...impressive for a SHTF situation. 10:55...REALISTIC EXAMPLE.....You don't need to carry CHAR CLOTH in your survival kit ....with all the fires happening around USA and CANADA, your bound to find CHARRED WOOD everywhere..LOL Great job....will continue comment, after I go out and apply some Char Cloth to my wound and a bandaid.

Great video j3 and jj. To answer you're question on an episode of dual survival they were in such a damp environment and really struggled to start a fire so Cody Lundin toulk it upon himself to make char cloth. It wasn't just for show they genuinely needed it for future fire. Respect from 🇬🇧👍😎💪🌱🌳
@SurvivalDispatch
@SurvivalDispatch Жыл бұрын
How did they get their first fire? Probably a friction fire? If you posses the skills and knowledge to do such a thing, would you every travel to a wilderness environment unprepared? I think flint and steel combined with charred cloth is a really fun way to start a fire. For a long period of time it was the most reliable way to start a fire. Not anymore. Not even close. It is a good skill to know, but I would say very very unlikely to be needed in a real survival situation. Just my two cents. Thanks so much for all the views and support in the comment section.

Fold up a square foot of heavy-duty aluminum foil -- use it to form a cup or small pot for boiling and drinking water, or as a reflective signal. You might be able to squash it into the can, or slide it under the ranger band.

There is a piece of mind in having the ability to make charcloth in the event your one Bic lighter fails you because the tiny flint decided to corrode and fall apart (happened to me twice before). Flint and steel is far easier than friction fire if you have the choice. That said, a tiny ferro rod plus a Bic lighter will be a far more reliable combo in such a kit. The Altoids tin is just too small for everything good which is why I've started using a Maxpedition micro stuffed in a cargo pocket instead. I can get everything from the oh sh!t / wazoo kit into it (don't have an ulu). That said I always have a knife on me anyway. Really, the only thing I'd want to change about the Oh Sh!t kit is the container but that's minor really. The price isn't my favorite feature but recognize that it does provide value, unlike almost every other complete commercially available tiny survival kit on the market, this one is actually viable. You probably could use cheaper components, but there would be sacrifices as pointed out in the video.
@alexandergutfeldt1144

I build a survival 'tin' out of a 800ml titanium bento box I bought on aliexpress. That tin is big enough to boil water, holds a usable knife, some emergency blankets, medical supplies etc. Building the kit was fun and I believe it could be very useful in an emergency, but it is just too big & heavy ( ≈ 1/2kg ) to be carried all the time. The altoids tin 'disappears' in the backpack and isn't felt, that means you will have when you need it. My kit, not so much!

I would submit that you CAN get that mylar blanket into your altoids tin. Here's my clever trick for compressing a mylar blanket. You vacuum seal it. I am so thrifty that I will usually cut the excess plastic off from bags if there is enough to allow me to vacuum seal small things in the bit that I cut off. So you cut down a larger bag if you need to. Seal any edges that are open, leaving only one of them open (obviously). Take the mylar blanket and fold it in half again being careful to neatly match the edges up. This isn't as hard as it may sound. Put the blanket into the vacuum seal bag and seal it as close to the blanket as you can. Cut off any excess plastic. You will be pleased and amazed at how much smaller it gets with the air taken out. It will definitely fit in your tin, probably along the short side of the tin. If I had your address I would send you a couple. Shenanigans are good. I love the fun and laughs when you two are together.

Pro tip : Amazon sells “next size up” Altoids style tins 3 for $11. They measure 3.25x 4.25x .9 The extra inch (minds up fellas) That extra inch facilitates most standard size multi tools & folders as well as 3/8 x3 ferro rods & regular size Bics. Most single AAA lights too. So you get the Altoids convenience (easy back pocket carry) but you aren’t trapped in the mini, tiny, micro tools trap that so often moves us from outdoors tools down to kitchen drawer tools or means we pay ridiculous prices cuz the market is so small (pun intended) 🫶🏼

May we suggest you use duct tape to protect the edge on the ullu /knife. There's four sides on that tin, take advantage of the ranger band. Seriously, why do you people call it ranger band instead of an elastic band? We give you 7 points out of 10 for having a pink lighter & fire tabs. Do you know that fire starters exist on our body? Hairs & oil on our body are excellent fire starters mate, both of you got beards. And 8 points for the oven bag, it has multi usages. Unwind the banklines, take a strand & wrap it around the lighter with maybe a needle & pins in it. The sticky label on the lighter & child safety ring can be use as a fishing lures. Do try linseed instead of pumpkin. That Crawford spot may be flammable too. Great fun kit but doubt it'll beat the Wazoo shit kit. Nice to see two mates having fun, it's priceless. All the above suggestions have been field tested with positive results. Any ideas is possible with a system & procedures hence no matter the weather, time or terrain...we march.!! Even if you don't boil water the metal container can have more uses than a plastic one. It's a great kit to have but saying you can't build one cheaper isn't true. They wouldn't make the kits if there was no profit to be had and I wouldn't expect them to make them for free. Time is the most valuable resource a person has because there is no getting it back. Which makes the kits even more worth buying in the first place because you save your own time and get quality items without sourcing it or making it yourself.

Char cloth ... can't see the advantages of carrying it? Really? Cmon guys.. I think the possum mentality along with your next fire mentality ringing in my head. What does it weigh, what space does it take. What effort to make it..think drinking out your tin... etc. I don't know if I totally agree with the no char. I'm not disagreeing either. Could I make it without it. Yes. Could it help. Very possibly could save your life!

I think it is a good idea to understand the process of making and using it for sure. I just wouldn’t count on it as a primary means of fire starting. We have way better ways. Daniel Boone would agree. If you are prepared enough to get your first fire started, you are probably prepared enough to do it again. I’m sure in some extreme long term primitive survival scenario where all you have is your knife and a little tin it would come in handy. I just don’t think it is that realistic. It is pretty fun to use flint and steel as well. I really enjoy the history of it.
