I agree, it is forward thinking. I would love to see a battery powered trailer platform that drives the wheels and integrates with the cars computer system. That platform could be built into everything from utility trailers to small campers. Also autos and SUV's that divide the larger battery packs into 2 seperate units for faster charging (chargers would have to accommodate duel outlets). Like having a gas powered pickup truck with duel tanks.

Depending on the range, something like that could possibly make electric cars viable in America, but it would need a realistic minimum of 600 miles. An extended range model of 1000 miles or so would be popular too... driving all day to reach your destination (or interim stopping point) is not unusual here, even east of the Mississippi.

Gasoline is not a problem during the hollidays. A car that does 5L/100 km emits 110g CO2 pr. km/ if you drive sensibly, divide that by 3-5 people, and the car suddently becomes the cleanest form of transport, cleaner than the average train (except France that have nuclear trains). A 6kW gasoline generator, will be able to supply enough power for relaxed country road driving or highway driving up the rear of a lorry, especially as you always encounter congestion wherever you go between june and August, where you'll be charging while the other motorists just waste time!! A 6kW generator is light enough to be mounted on the hook in a box without needing wheels underneath. Just rectify the 220V AC from it to make around 300V DC and hook it up to you high voltage circuit where the inverter draws its power and you'll have a self regulating system that keeps the battery voltage around 300V and throttles up when your battery sags.

A couple of years ago I was following a gentleman who had converted a VW Rabbit into an electric car. He then procured another Diesel Rabbit which he truncated the entire rear of the car behind the front firewall. With some tinkering magic he used that set up as a pusher / charging unit connected via a control cable and trailer hitch to extend his range exponentially. It was not a perfect solution but a proof of concept that this idea can work.

Plan for a stop half way. There are usually fast chargers at services that can get you 80% in 30 mins. Alternatively wait till the solid state cells get productionised. Goodenough has them working in the lab with capacity 5x weight for weight what current cells will do. I think dropping to 3x will happen to make them easier to produce and then you have EVs with 1500km range.

An idea I had 20+ years ago, back before there were lithium batteries, more or less, was to hook up (through a clutch/torque converter) a small gas/diesel engine that could transmit torque to the electric motor shaft - more or less a “backwards hybrid that plugs in.” The idea was that once one had shifted up to a higher gear (using an aircooled VW transaxle), one could then throttle up the fuel-burning engine and supply most of the energy needed to get down the road. The intended result would be to give up to 5 times the battery-only cruising range, presuming a steady 30 mph/50kmh or so. (Higher speeds reduce range drastically - and any more, I do not trust myself to go all that fast, regardless of how many wheels the vehicle has!)

I towed a small trailer behind my Model Y LR and it cut my range below 50%. I would think that dragging this little trailer around would offset any gain in range and it would most likely be a wash. Possibly a battery pack that does not touch the ground like a strong bike rack mount would be better, it could swing out of the way like a bike rack to open the rear hatch. The way things are progressing I think in a few years 500 mile plus range with be the standard anyway.

@GullWingInnMoclips Жыл бұрын
@@SimonHollandfilms Yes. The tank in a BMW i3 holds just over 2 gallons. We rarely use ours, but it's great when charging stations are occupied or down... you can just keep going as te REX charges the battery. Did 515 miles in one day alternating between DC fast charging sessions and adding gas. A brilliant piece of stop gap engineering that allows us to drive just the one car... we use about 2-4 gallons of gas every six months or so. This early i3 has a small battery with about 80 miles of range, and we live where the EV infrastructure is slow to build up, but it has worked exceptionally well for us for 5 years... an amazing little car.

I have given a lot of thought to electric cars over recent years. They have come a long way since the Sinclair C5, but we wont talk about that. :-) Battery technology is coming on leaps and bounds and whilst range is still an issue with some cars. As you say it's buying something to suite your needs. I think we will see a lot more hiring of cars in the future. This looks like a neat idea. I suppose in theory you could build in a lightweight regenerative breaking system. This could increase the range. It might would be clever if the battery trailer was the primary source of power and the cars battery as the secondary source. I appreciate the inventor may have a clever battery management system that maintains some sort of control either automatically or by the driver. ? Do they make one for Aircraft or is Professor Wallace working on that one. This is all good food for thought and worth being a Patreon for. Many thanks Professor Simon.

Battery weight would make this even less efficient and you’d get even less range per kwh, this is why electric vehicles don’t scale well- as to add more battery weight requires more battery power to move it, giving a negative feedback as the more batteries you need, the less those batteries give you range. 60 kw? Is that Kwh? or just able to supply 60kw for an amount of time? It has potential as it can be jettisoned- but you’d need to be able to use that power first, so to speak… and then need a network of “stations” to drop it off at. It could work, but batteries like these are hard to “rent” to people without really good, dummy-proof battery management systems and upkeep. Also it would need to be impact resistant and be liquid cooled and heated.

The issue this range extender add-on attempts to address will already be solved by the time it gets any mass market penetration. It is designed for the 1st generation electric cars with super short-range and assumes the auto industry will sit still. The reality is : as soon as cars start to get decent ranges, then super charging solutions take over and this product becomes useless. Current generation electric cars are already entering the super charging system, and there are fewer and fewer cars with these tiny batteries. It won't take long until prices drop enough to make the very idea of using a range extender dated.

It very much can be a long term solution, if the battery shortage is not solved, or super chargers "filling" your car under 5 minutes won't be cheap enough to become widespread. It's hard to make accurate predictions on innovation. Even if those extenders became obsolete in a few years, that's about the lifetime of Li ion batteries, the most valuable part of those trailers.
