Yes, but while a worker at VW costs the company 4000$/month, in China he costs 500$/month. Hence EU car makers either produce a HUGE amount of cheap cars (and then have to deal with warranty and so on and so for) OR build "added value products" where they have a decent gain. Look into the Kandi K27 instead. They may cost more and honestly this looks nicer, but the Kandi is already going for sale in in the US in fact they already have certification from the IRS for the 7.5k tax credit which drops the price of a K27 to less than 10k! Also after the import fees, shipping, and customs the K27 would probably cost less overall!

@@zeniktorres4320 there are plenty of small cars that are safe. None of them are made in China. Their cars don't even come close to DOT standards of many other tiny cars that are sold here. There's the Citroën Ami but maybe it's a bit too iconoclastic to be a serious proposition, especially as it will only do 45 kph and therefore has 'mobility scooter' written all over it. I'd still get one but... the Mini EV absolutely hits the sweet spot. (Oh and I really don't care much for Elon Musk, his attitude or his target group but that's a different issue.) Apart from that, the Mini EV would be ideal for car-sharing schemes.

A lot of under privileged people have high end vehicles, constant traveling to other countries, etc. I sometimes say: "poor people use the little money they have for essential things; those people (we call them 'pelintras', don't know the translation) make loans for cars, phones, travels and vacations but don't feed their kids/themselves". 😟
