Most colleges have a list they give to all undergraduate students. Our college even had an agreement for a starter pack with Bed Bath and Beyond. Plus since we were in the dorms, the college supplied us with new mattresses. That list and a bit of common sense, was all we needed. Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon had everything.

No it won't work in the US. Better to buy all electrical and electronic stuff fron the US bcos their plugpoints are different.
