With those axles in a rig like that, it seems like a waste NOT to add rear steer!! However… I’d suggest you finish it, wheel it, and add that later while you’re tweaking other things. 👍🏼

Hey Nate! Former avionics manufacturing tech here. In regards to weatherproofing your wiring, you can find shrink tubing that's lined with an adhesive that melts at high temperature. As you shrink the tubing, the adhesive will also melt, forming a seal. You can also get the adhesive separately in the form called Hot Melt Tape. You can wrap it inside non-adhesive shrink tubing, or weave the tape between wires/cables to fill in any gaps to prevent FOD (foreign objects/debris)/water ingress as well. The adhesive is also nice for keeping nylon braid/wire loom in place. As far as rear-steer goes, yes! I would love to see how you incorporate rear-steer into a rig
@paulhimle Жыл бұрын
Self-fusing silicon tape is another handy product. I’d also be cautious of soldering electrical connections, it may be fine here but it can embrittle the conductor or have metallurgical issues with connectors not meat to be soldered (haven’t checked this one myself). A previous boss informed me the did not allow solder connections in military aircraft due to the affects of vibration on the solder. When crimping fine stranded wires such as welding cable you will need specialty fine stranded rated connectors. This was a fire problem in the early days of solar. Again this may not apply here but thought I’d pass it on.
@alextran93 Жыл бұрын
@@paulhimle Whenever my company needed to incorporate solder joints between wires, we would cover the joint with adhesive-lined shrink tubing to add rigidity and strain relief. Depending on the joint, we would include a service loop or fold-over to allow for extra length to allow for additional strain relief, then cover that in more shrink tubing. If we needed to solder onto connectors or devices, we would apply potting compound. For automotive applications, it doesn't matter that much, but sometimes us gear heads like to over-engineer sometimes :D

Definitely do rear steer before worrying about the bonnet. It'll actually make a big difference to the rigs performance over fresh air that it is already getting. Also, you can buy heat shrink that has glue in it. When it gets to a certain temperature the glue melts and seals the heat shrink. It works really well.

Hi Matt as a campervan electrical installer I’d highly recommend investing in a hydraulic lug crimper for your battery leads, if you get crimps that are sealed at the end you only need to seal the small gap between the lug and wire insulation. This can be sealed with glue lined heatshrink which since finding is what I solely use now

Yes rear steer and yes ducting. Having grown up in PNW, I understand keeping rain water out your intake. If you could manage a swoop of sorts with a drain hole at the rear. Sure it would allow some air to escape but it would have draining potential also.

I agree with the hood scoop, but there is also an option of a snorkel which would allow for you to solve potential rain/water issues. Also rear steer is always a good idea, just depends on personal preference. You could always install it later if you feel you want/need it.

Definitely ducting. Add baffling in a way that diverts rain towards a drain so that the air comes in dry. Add a pre filter to the exit of the ducting to keep the filter cleaner. Just some sort of foam panel that you can blast out with air.

Use marine terminals on the end of your battery cables, they are designed for a mechanical crimp (no solder needed - can actually cause problems if it wicks up the wire!) and the outside end is fully sealed. Use an adhesive lined heatshrink and you have a clean, reiable weatherproof cable end.

I haven't finished the series yet, so maybe you've addressed these in other videos, but just a couple suggestions - 1.) With your battery on the axle, put a fuse right at the terminal - if anything on the trail catches a main battery cable and rips the insulation off you don't want a fire. 2.) I vote against the hood scoop intake - too much risk of ingesting a wave of water if you cross a creek or big puddle. 3.) as others have said, get it running and test it as-is before adding rear steer, but buy the parts :). Very cool build, I've been enjoying the series very much!

Since that's a rock crawler, then I think rear steer would really help. As for the air intake and rain water, just look at how snorkels do it and maybe build something like that into the hood that lifts out of the way when you open it, or add a snorkel to the system. The Aussies have socks on theirs to knock down road dust from getting to the main filter, plus the top hat can be rotated from facing to the front to facing to the rear to reduce rain intrusion. Simple solutions are best.

That thing is awesome. Definitely do rear steer if it is that simple I don't see the benefit of hood vents unless you run into over heating issues. People will complain and say you're sucking in hot air where the filter is but it is piped straight to a HOT turbo and is going to be compressed which builds heat then passes through an intercooler to cool it back down. I don't think a 30° difference at the filter will change the iat much as long as you're intercooler is efficient.
