I played tommy armour 845s since highschool and in my time in the Navy. I gave my clubs I love so much to my son who is 13 and is now pretty darn good with them...I got some used Nike Slingshot 2006 tour metal shaft, then upgraded 😂 to Nike Slingshot OSS graphite... I played ok with them, but I'm not feeling natural like I do with my 845s. So I just ordered some Sim2 with graphite. I am praying this is where I can be happy again!!!

Excellent example of why there are so many different irons in a company’s line up. Better players can benefit from spin, control and consistency whilst players who vary in their strike can still have a chance of getting a good result from a poor strike. Have Apex Pro 21s on the way (currently gaming Forged 919s) as my launch and spin was in a much better window and standard deviation was ridiculous! Keep up the good work guys - really enjoying your reviews and Road to PGA Championship content!

I'm gaming the 790's . I upgraded from the prior generation. Honestly, I enjoyed the acoustics more from 2019. But these 21' editions are great with both, off center strikes and the one's that come out a bit thin. The feel is not lost, and performance has been enhanced. The 19's were a little more muted. These 21' 790's have a pop to them. But I've only had 2 rounds and a range session with them. I'm sure they will grow on me. Plus they are +.50 shaft length, rather than the +.75 shafts I played last season. Still an adjustment phase. I could feel a kick point with the longer shafts, now that's gone. Throws my timing off a little. I can feel the club head better in the takeaway.

Great video as always! But I can`t help but feel like I want this exact test. But choosing an iron from every series that hits a choosen yardage, say 180yards. We now only know the distance a 7 iron go, id like to know if there is a differance in stopping power between a blade and the sim max os, hitting the yardage. If you need a 6i from a blade, but you can hit a 8i from Max OS, which one has the most stopping power then?

For me it came down to the t200 or the 790s or 770s. Went away from titleist just because of feel/aesthetics but during the fit, the 770 and 790 did the exact same thing with regards to spin and launch charictaristics as well as feel. Got the 790s as they are a bit longer for my 14 year old self and who couldn’t use more forgiveness. However, I find that the short irons are the ones that really explode off a good strike. (Pitching wedge has gone almost 150 on occasion). I think that is the Achilles heel of the 790

Great video as always! Could I recommend doing a similar comparison but matching up the lofts more accurately like: p790 8 iron, p7mc 7 iron, sim2 max os 9 iron or something similar with the jpx 921 line?
@2ndswing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas. This is an interesting topic that has been suggested before. The fitting components we get from the manufacturers are always 7 irons. We could possibly source some clubs from our store to complete a similar test attempting to get the lofts the same but it won't be a perfect test. I personally would like to see what happens if say a SIM 2 Max had the same loft as a P7MB with the same length shaft. Stay tuned this is something I would like to see. - Thomas
@StephenParsey3 жыл бұрын
@@2ndswingI’d like to see it with the same length shaft as you mentioned so you’re not having to say “but the 8 is 1/2” shorter so there’s 2-3 yards lost.” I think it would be good to see the dispersion “forgiveness” difference isolated that way.

So difficult to choose.. they vary in cost quite a bit a well. I’m seeing 500+ more dollars for the p790 vs the sim max I’ve been playing for a year I usually shoot 15 over my 7 iron is a consistent 170 yard 115-118 ball speed with some very cheap old Strata irons. I’m leaning toward the sim max in a stiff shaft but don’t want to grow out of them in a year.

I am a game improvement player (Callaway Mavrik), but if I were to pick a "players" model from these it would be the P770. They seem to offer a little more distance (than MB and MC), sufficient spin, combined with workability and some amount of forgiveness.

@StephenParsey3 жыл бұрын
Kind of absurd that TaylorMade (and probably the others, too) call a range of 27-34 degrees the same number iron. I really think the USGA/R&A need to define a standard iron loft with flex of +/-1.5 or 2 degrees for strong, standard and helper lofts, while still remaining comparable over time for distances.

Great video! But I find that the data of Thomas’ swing is consistently different from that of his indoor swings; the spin is up (sometimes by 1000 rpm) and the launch is lower. Has Thomas done a swing change or it’s just a mat/grass and indoor/outdoor difference?
@2ndswing3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Combination of a little swing change (going from a picker to taking some more turf) and hitting off grass versus a mat. One of the downsides of regularly hitting off a mat is that you will develop your swing to pick the ball rather than dig down into the turf. Picking the ball inside will lead to less spin, while having a steeper attack angle will cause more spin and more spin will lead to shorter distances. It will be interesting to see when we get back inside for testing to see the differences. - Thomas

Would love to know if the lofts were the same would the p770 still be more powerful than the mc or mb Because if you combo, well I want that smooth transition of gapping. So if I make the lofts transition will I have that perfect 12-14yd gapping. Because without changing lofts then the gap atm would seem to be 14-18yd if i go from mc to p770 if lofts aren't adjusted..
@PkPerry153 жыл бұрын
I’ve pre order a split set of 770 and 790. Because they are forged face they can bend the irons to suit loft differences. So my 4 and 5 iron of the 790 are both 1.5 degrees weaker to compensate
@2ndswing3 жыл бұрын
This is a great comparison that we have on the list of videos to complete. I would assume a P770 at the same loft of a MB would go further due to the design of the head, but the biggest influence on distance and spin is the loft of the club. The ball may actually fly very different with an iron that has been bent but has different GC properties. I agree with Perry on a couple degrees weaker to compensate in his situation. - Thomas
@georgyboi69693 жыл бұрын
@@2ndswing If you did a video where you hit mb, mc & p770 at std specs Then bent them all to same loft. To see what would happen. I guess I understand CG location affects flight and trajectory, but for years now companies talk about thinner/faster faces and now with speed foam. So do they actually make any difference in ball speed and distance, or is it 100% CG location and loft which dictates distances.. Because if so, we could all just play the Mc and get the same distances. Only thing we lose is forgiveness, and maybe, a tiny tiny amount of launch which again affects spin rates but once more it's allabout loft and CG and the whole faster faces and speed foam ideas, well are we all just being stooged..? And CG is just dictating spin rates and the extra distance is coming from CG location. Id like for it to be CG and speed faces/foam. But so far I've never really seen a video on KZbin which makes me believe otherwise.. because im sure if you grabbed a 6iron MB and a 7iron p790 they would go just about the same distance.. soo once again it's all CG and loft and no speedfoam benefit.. I guess I'm just confused if thin faces and speed foams actually work or if it's just a gimme.. Cause if it worked, why don't Mizuno do it?? Leaders in irons. Titleist don't. Callaway don't. Cobra don't. Ping don't. Only them and PXG and the tech has been out long enough for other to mimic it if it worked..
