Been doing this for 15 years or so using the Focusrite ISA 428 pre with the optional Digital card. Has been great when needing many inputs at once like band tracking. Came up with it the same way that you did trying to milk a few extra ins without coughing up coin for one more interface. I thought ppl knew about this hack, but so many here are new to it. Glad that you shared it for the community 🙌🏾

This is precisely why I got the 4 710d. The 4 line ins and the ADAT make it super versatile. Got an awesome deal on a demo model from Sweetwater. You could pick up the 4 channel Warm Audio preamp and run that sucker in to the line ins of the 4-710d. I've considered that. Love this kind of video!

I had a 710d, but the pre's weren't my thing for my remote rig. I went to the Audient ASP 880 and like the pre's much better. I ADAT into my X8 for 12 channels, and then patch my API 3124MV for another 4 if needed. So basically I have 16 channels for remote stuff in a 3U case. I use 2 Apollo x16 for I/O into my API for my home studio, and love the routing flexibility it gives me along with the two Flock Patch 64 for outboard and added I/O. You want something that will change your life? Get a Flock Patch 64. I only use them for line level stuff. No mic input pass throughs. Best money I ever spent next to my API. Love your vids and really fun watching you discover more and more ways to do things. Very informative too.

Great video, Andrew. I have two Apollo x8ps, each with an external preamp/channel strip going into each channel at line level. The 14 outboard preamplifiers I use going straight into the 2 8p Apollos at line level are: Neve 1073dpx preamp and Eq (2 x channels) UA LA619 channel strip UA6176 dtrip Rupert Neve Designs Shelford Channel Manley Core channel strip Warm Audio 273 EQ (2 channels) Warm Audio 412 (4 x API-sty;e pres) SSL Six (with 2 x superanalog channels) It's fun to have 14 devoted channels of various preamps, each with different tonal characteristics, depending on the material. I still need to learn more about the adatI/IO. I don't use any of those ports. Thanks for an other excellent video, Andrew, Cheers.

You've probably already been bombarded with this, but definitely separate those two apollos so they aren't stacked. I had my X8p stack with my 16, and the X8p burned out! Had to get the board swapped. It works great now, but I definitely keep that spacing. It looks like one of them could easily go between those compressors, since fets don't run hot and I believe aren't as deep at the apollos. Just a friendly tips to hopefully save you the headache I went through!

based on what I learned watching your videos, I got a minimalist setup that includes an apollo twin x duo, focusrite scarlett 8pre, and two external warm audio pres (the 73-eq and the tb12). That is kind of the opposite of what you are discussing here, but in many cases less is more. The apollo twin x duo can handle two api vision channel strips on its two unison inputs, plus pultec and distressor plugins on each of the 8 adat channels coming from the focusrite. I was actually surprised that I could get all that with a relatively cheap setup like this.

I'm running an Apollo x8 at the center of my setup. I have 8 external preamps running ADAT into my Apollo through the Cranborne ADAT 500 series lunchbox (2x Great rivers, 2x avedis ma5's, 2x Capi Heiders). For the analog inputs, I use the four unison preamps, and then I have four external pre's going into the 4-8 line inputs (more 500 series preamps...Capi vp25, Capi vp26, AEA RPQ 500, Cranborne Camden). This allows me to have 16 simultaneous inputs. I also have some external hardware in line inputs 1-4 that I can switch to in console for the mixing phase.

A Rupert Neve Designs 5025 Dual Shelford so that I can live vicariously through your setup! The 5025 is essentially a modern day 1073, I actually have the RND 5211 and these preamps are amazing, I love '73 style pre's by Warm Audio and other clones but the RND gear is incredibly clear and larger than life and designed by the man himself. I'm planning to get the Cranborne Audio 500R8 together with some Meris 500 Series 440 Mic Preamps as connecting and powering everything via CAT7 Ethernet seems to be the more versatile version and the pedal loop of the Meric preamps seems very clever. Also 500 modules feel "less oldschool" than some 19" rack gear that has been around since the 70s.

I don't have any outboard preamps, but I just learned today that I can use my Apollo x8p's DB25 8 outputs (i.e. via a DB25-to-TRS 8-cable snake), to drive a series of powered stereo headphone amplifiers (I have an AKG HP4E 4-channel Headphone Amplifier on order from Sweetwater). With that, alone, for tracking, I can route up to four musician-specific, stereo mixes to cue/monitoring (i.e. to other musicians) in my home studio, as set up through UAD Console. So each musician can have a customized, "More me" mix sent to their individual headphones. What's cool as well is that the AKG unit has 4 balanced input jacks (i.e. 2 separate channels, each with Left and Right inputs)so it can simultaneously carry 2 different stereo mixes, . I plan to get two of the AKG units, so that I could have one unit driving headphones for (say) drummer and bass player, and the other unit driving (say) guitar and vocals, each receiving their own, customized mix. I have an Axe-FX III, so that could be used to route bass or guitars directly into the recording interface for a mic-less setup, and then record drums live (or alternatively vocals live) simultaneously without worrying about mic bleed. I love that level of functionality!!!

Andrew! Been lovin’ the channel for a while now! GREAT info! I came about a year late to this video, but I know how much you love your preamps & I thought of something you might want to check out! I picked up a Flock Audio Patch from Sweetwater (SW) a while back, and it has changed my world! You should talk to your SW hookup for the hookup! The original unit I have has 32 in / 32 out, (got it from my SW rep Phil Potts), BUT they make newer, big-boy units with 64 in / 64 out AND even 96 in / 96 out! Scout out some KZbins about it/them and again, talk to your SW Rep! Imagine all your analog gear, pre-wired, pre-connected, with an app that controls the analog path so that you can mix/match/change your preamp chain with a mouse click or tablet tap?!?! This is some “I-hadn’t-even-THOYGHT-of-that-yet” level stuff! If you’re ever in the Seattle area, it’d be an HONOR to have you come by & check out my little home studio.

I do this with my X8P, but with a Focusrite ISA428MKii, which has 4 pres and 4 line ins over 8 channel ADAT out. I can have 8 line outputs, 8 ADAT outputs. I also then have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 using FW800 connection with 8 mic/line inputs, a Focusrite Octopre with 8 mic/line inputs via ADAT, and can add another 2 inputs via SPDIF (used to us an Art Tube Pre for this). That's another 18 inputs, 8 analogue outputs, 2 SPDIF outputs, 8 ADAT outputs, so 18 out. I can go into Audio MIDI Setup on Mac OS and create an Aggregate Device to get 16 ins from X8P + ISA428MKii, and 18 ins from Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and Octopre, totalling 34 inputs and 34 outputs, all showing up as one interface when selected in a DAW. I can clock it all together from the X8P.

That's some good info. Thx. I'm currently looking at expansion as well and not sure if I should go with external pres and an x16 or straight to an x8p. My current set up is an x4 with Audient ASP800 for 8 additional pres via adat. I also own a Neve 1073 DPX and to be quite honest I actuall rarely use the Unison pres unless recording a band where I need all 12 of my inputs. I keep flip flopping between the thought of x8p and x16 as I know I'll likely want to add more external pres. This video is going to make me look very closely at the 4 710. As for your question of which pres to get next I love my 1073 DPX and would also look at API or the WA412. Depending on how you want to expand the Audient ASP 800 is quite impressive. The vintage channels get used all the time even on some of my stereo bus mixes. The other 6 channels are very clean. No inserts though, the ASP880 has inserts for each channel.

Seems like the next preamps you need would be some API pres. You could get the 3124 for 4 312 preamps. Or if you’re wanting uncolored, you could get millennia or grace designs.

Another option is to get a Cranborne Audio 500ADAT as your extra 8 inputs connected via ADAT. Then fill the 500 series with any 8 preamps you want. You also end up with an analogue summing mixer and extra headphone sends by doing that. I had that setup with an x8p and x16 originally. UAD make great sounding interfaces, but I actually found their Console software fairly inflexible. I missed real hardware control, so I've moved over to a Presonus StudioLive 32s digital mixer/interface. That way I have physical controls, low latency monitoring, a 32 channel DAW control surface, and build in FX that don't cost an arm and a leg like UAD. The StudioLive did not have ADAT, so I moved to a Radial 500 series Powerhouse. As for next pre's you should get... if you have a 500 series rack, get a couple Burl B1s, and a couple Radial Jensen Twin Servos. They are amazing.

very informative video, do you have a recommendation for an external preamp for DI'ing guitar (used with an Apollo x6)? 👍

Naturally the next step in the sound palette would be 'api'-ish preamps. I would pick clean pres also, love the millennias for instance. (hv-3)

i would use the warm audio 312 4 channel thing, sry dont know the right name. its just uses 1 rack space and you get 4 mic inputs in the back or 4 di inputs on the front

How about CAPI VP28s or buy a used WA412 and swap the op amps for either a CAPI op amp or some red dots?

Very cool if the digital side of my 4 710d worked. I bought it to use as a 8 channel adat expansion, but mine was broke and there's no service here.

Hey Andrew - check out the WesAudio ngLeveler sometime! It's analog automation interface that supports MCU (so you can control it with a layer on your UF8). It's a great way to get an analog fader surface in a small space! I use mine for mixing, but it's ALSO a great way to introduce analog faders you can ride into your tracking workflow!

Super dope setup man, mine is almost the same except I have a Twin + 4-710d to add some extra inputs on the other side of my room (with a extra long TB cable). How do you like the compressors on the 4-710?

With the twin there isn’t a way of clocking them together like there is on the bigger units. Have you had any issues with that as it’s my main hesitation?
@DaniSalat
@DaniSalat 2 жыл бұрын
@@samainslie1015 you can use the 4-710d as WC, adat out carries the clocking into the twin. I had that same setup a few years back
