How to Use External ADAT Hardware with Apollo Interfaces
Wondering how you can expand your apollo twin? or Just How to Add Inputs to Your Audio Interface in general. This will get you covered on the essentials on audio interface expansion.
In this video we will be adding inputs to the Apollo Twin, We do this using ADAT optical connectors and an ADAT Mic Pre, In this case the Behringer ADA8200. Unfortunately you can't add outputs to the apollo twin with all ADAT interfaces but we do look at options for that as well.

Thanks for this! I know some older/cheaper interfaces have issues with compatibility with the latest Apple Mac software. I’ve got an Apollo Twin X which works perfectly in terms of compatibility, but if I linked up say a Behringer interface like this, do I have to investigate compatibility issues in advance or, because it’s essentially a slave to the Apollo, would it not matter?

I’m super surprised no one has asked this, but let’s say the superior divide isn’t the Apollo, but another interface with better conversion and clocking. Let’s say the Babyface pro and an x8 Apollo. If I want to use the baby face as mic pre and speaker out can you still use unison plug-ins from the Apollo when recording?

Sorry was tracking rap for the last 3 weeks Not one of my genres of choice but pays the bills Anyway Have a Audient asp880 on the way About $1300 US for 10 year old tech but the “if it works don’t fix it” fits here Something nice here is the aes, spdif analog DB25 allows Simultaneous use of eight channels light pipe and DB25 analog ins and outs Onboard patch point switching for outboard gear, Front side switches for both sample rate 44.1-96 and impedance against the pres @ 200-1400-3600ohm respectively of course pads, combo Jacks for inputs, the ability to bypass pres for outboard if you choose the patch point buttons for each channel and front panel jfet DI built in so no radial needed for hi z guitar, bass ect.. Just very versatile box A bit more than I wanted to spend for adat expansion but the converters and preamp quality even compared to the new Apollo pres are worth the price of admission So so much better that the Berhringer 8200 I was running, if your paying for Apollo don’t kill quality with these cheaper solutions I passed on getting another Apollo X rack in favor of this The unison pre UAD plugs are good but the real deal is better In hybrid I use both plus the now available UAD native right in protools I was waiting for Audient to release a Asp900 or 980 but they’re recent offering of the evo makes me think it’s not gonna happen and the asp800 or 880 is a better choice given my experience and personal opinion, good luck!

@@icm1975 In this set up you can basically ignore the SSL12, keep it in the aggregate as its useful but the scarlet has the better ADAT options by a long shot. Now depending on what ADAT unit you have you need to know if like my behringer it has to be set as the clocking source. If thats the case set the Clock Source of the Audio Interface to ADAT, next set the Sample Rate to either 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. (dip switches on the unit) to what you want or are working at. Once that is done you should be able to see the additional ADAT inputs. if you have two units you need to set up for both to get the 16 channels of input at 44.1 / 48k

without both in and out you cant make a complete loop. That MKII can only output more signals. Not take in more inputs. So you could use it to send a whole stack of extra outs and route the manually back into the Clarett but thats uses up your inputs. A workaround if you are on Mac is to make an Aggregate device in settings. And use both units in sync like that. Alternatively something like the Behringer here - www.thomann.de/gb/thlpg_lv3lsv64u3.html into the carett would give it 8 more in and outs up to 48khz, I think i said in the video there's very few dedicated ADAT units out there, But thats a comparable price example to that MKII and what i picked up an have in the video.

Pre amps totally a factor if its for micing up. If like me you are using direct inputs for synths an samplers. Not so much. You can use other interfaces to extended sure. @Unders 11 ай бұрын
You seem to be confused in that ADAT inputs do not an can not be supported by UAD unison recording. Quality depends on a variety of things, Mic preamps for one thing are a factor. But one that has absolutely no effect on me as i record synths and drum machines. seamless, once all set up, sure.

So I have an Apollo Twin X and just ordered the Echo Fix X3... I want to be able to take advantage of the 4 individual tape head outs... would this solution solve that problem? I'm not sure I understand why/if I would need the optical out that the Apollo Twin does not have. Thanks!
@Unders

Truth be told I’m unfamiliar with the unit. But the Apollo twin lacks the ability to sent signal out via ADAT.

Question Please: Would This Method work with my scenario below. * I have an Alesis 24 trk Hard Disc Recorder (HD24-XR model which has the higher end AD/DA convertors) and I was wondering if I can use the Light Pipe outs (24 total outs that are in 3 groups of 8...and 24 total inputs ) to be my interface with my DAW. * I would like to use the TRS balanced audio into the Alesis Hard Disc recorder and then take the light pipe out signal of the Alesis unit and use an audio interface (or use some device) to convert the signal to USB to use my DAW. I would do the reverse on playback so that I can mix old school through an analog console with vintage outboard gear...Hoping.........Thanks in advance... Phil NYC Area

Thank you for this video. Very useful!! 👏 I bought the Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic to use the outputs on my apollo Twin X, but I am not getting any signal from those utputs. I am not even sure I set it up properly. I turned the ADAT to Line on but it still doesn't seem to work. Do I need to do something manually on my Daw or am I missing something? Thanks again!!
@Unders

Twin X like my "vintage" twin here only has optical in. So can ONLY take inputs. It cant add 8 additional outs. The Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic (I think i dont have one) have ADAT to Line, So there's internal routing to send the extra ins as outputs. How you set that up, I do not know as ive never set up that unit. Feel free to ask focusrite to send me one so i can make a video 😆

@@Unders thanks! I don’t think it’s possible to use those outputs, so might have to return it. Might be a good idea to add in your video you’ve never done this, so that you don’t misguide other people by advising it’s possible to use this outputs… As for the test unit, feel free to ask FocusRite yourself. It’s your channel, I am sure they can send you a test unit!

ADAT doesn't allow you to output on the Apollo twin as it only has an IN ADAT. You can however use the alt out's as extra I/O - help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002813886-How-Do-I-Send-Signal-from-My-DAW-to-the-Line-3-4-Outputs-on-My-Apollo-Thunderbolt-Desktop-

I have a question and maybe you can help. I make hip hop beats and I mostly sample from vinyl and chop up samples. I use a MPC X which has 8 outputs. For my daw to record my beats into is Logic Pro on a m1 Mac Mini. I found someone selling a UAD Apollo twin interface very cheap but I know it only has 2 inputs and I like to take advantage of my 8 outputs on my MPC by separating sounds on different channels. My question is if I buy the Apollo interface and use a Behringer Ultragain ADA 8200 for the extra outputs to record into Logic? Can you explain how that would work? I’m use to using a digital 003 which had 8 inputs but it’s time to upgrade
@Unders
@Unders 2 ай бұрын
Twin does not support extra outputs. This allows 8 additional inputs. I use it for MPC, drum maschine, maschine etc etc. but there is no back and forth routing with the twin. It cannot do it. You want to track the out of your MPC. Yes. You want to send them to outboard after tracking. No.

Can you mix and match A/D devices to an ADAT device that are from different manufactuers? specifically, the presonus devices I've had, do not play well with others? is there something wrong with ASIO, or is ASIO4ALL a better choice so the two devices play well together, or is it a design flaw in ASIO or in Presonus device. I cannot find any answers to this.. All the ADAT videos, do not cover this issue.

Yo sorry you sent this the day i took 2 weeks off. The answer is yes on MAC as you can make aggrigate devices. For windows i do not know i've not used it since 7 came out. Now ASIO 4all has never been my friend either, ive always had better results working with native drivers, M-Audio with my Delta 1010 way back when. And the UAD system as shown is complex but so versitile an solid. As shown totally different brands but it simply doesn't matter.

Thanks for this adat overview. I have a question about the UA apollo twin if you don't mind. I am planning to purchase the twin if it can apply it's fx to the incoming adat channels in console software. Can it do that I wonder? Or is the fx processing only for the 3 channels of the twin. Thank you
@Unders
@Unders Жыл бұрын
No on the processing. Unison needs to run through the hardware and light pipe ADAT is just incoming data signal. It’s the same even on the massive I/O units the ADAT can’t be processed in the way in like that.

Hey bro, Thanks for the video, it helped a lot. But i need you help for another thing also: Im using Apollo Twin with Behringer Ada 8200. Ive set Behringer to 48khz and in UAD Console clock to ''ADAT''. I can see now the virtual channels and signals coming through them. When i monitor my instrument, it works fine. Showing signal path on ADAT 1 channel in UAD Console. Issue im having is in Ableton during recording. I've selected 3/4 input channel to record bass guitar cause i can see the signal when i play on 3/4 channel. But when i hit record, it records the output of the backing track (playing mix, in the other cannel in Ableton) also in the record track with the bass. What am i doing wrong? Thanks again.
