they're pretty good, but one thing to be aware of is you can't upgrade components individually, so if you need more disk space, you have to upgrade the whole package. For me - I needed a little more disk space just to make a staging host, and I had to double the monthly cost from $50 to $100. Plus there's no downgrading after.

NameCheap: For plugin debacles, I don't do automatic updates, and I use the free UpdraftPlus - Backup/Restore plugin manually. That is so that if something goes wrong and I don't notice it, the backups don't age out before I realize what happened, and whenever I look at the backups, I know all of them are good. I have to admit I never heard of some of the hosters you reviewed here. I'll probably continue moving people off our servers to BlueHost shared. I'd be interested in your thoughts on caching plugins and the CDNs.

Good advice with taking periodic manual backups. If you aren't running a blog and posting regularly, taking a manual backup each time before you make edits is perfectly feasible. I'll definitely consider a video about caching plugins and CDNs. Thanks for the suggestion!

This is such a fantastic review! Thank you for your honesty and clarity - it's very refreshing! I'm just starting out so it's all a bit overwhelming as I try to pick the best fit for my situation. I wondered if I could pick your brains? I'm looking to start an e-commerce website specialising in digital downloads (hosting these via a Dropbox plugin), hosting around 1000 digital product pages and I'm looking at potential hosting companies - in particular, SiteGround, WP Engine and now (since watching this video!!), Cloudways. I'm just starting out so am looking for reliability, ability to scale (as I'm unsure what my traffic will become over the next year) in the mid price range and wondered what you might recommend? Thanks again for the video! You've got a new subscriber here!
@Craylor4 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke! Since you're just starting out, I'd recommend Flywheel or Cloudways. Flywheel will give you the reliability you need with the best customer support, and you can start at their $15/mo price point which is quite unique for that tier of managed hosting. Even at the $30/mo package, I think it would be worth it at that stage of your store considering it would be getting over 5,000 page views per month. There is one issue I potentially see with Flywheel or WP Engine: storage. If you anticipate 1,000 digital product pages, I would imagine you'll be uploading one to many images per product listing, and even if these images are optimized, it may exceed 5GB (the total amount of space allotted for the starter Flywheel plan). If you do need more storage space, Cloudways is a better option. Their starter servers include 25GB of storage which is more roomy. There *are* workarounds to get more than 5GB of media storage on Flywheel and WP Engine. If you're interested in this, let me know. I don't want to give you too much info and make your head spin! So in summary: Flywheel at $15/mo is a great value and I think you'll love the experience and customer support. If you have concerns about storage space or like the idea of having a server to yourself, Cloudways is great too.

Sounds like you're much less enamored with Hostinger after using them since last year's review. I had been leaning toward Dreamhost or Namecheap but now I'll think about Cloudways. Do you consider any advantage to Dreamhost being one of 3 WP authorized web hosts (the other 2 are Bluehost and Siteground).
@Craylor3 жыл бұрын
Yes, after using Hostinger for a longer period of time, I am less than thrilled with their service. That's a good question regarding Dreamhost - personally, I've never taken that to mean much other than they have some promotional contract with WordPress. I really do like Dreamhost for shared hosting, though. Worth a look if you feel like Cloudways is too much for your needs. I am releasing a video in the next two weeks comparing those three hosts! Considering the 2019 reviewed and the 2020 reviewed companies - what would your rec be? Between both years, sounds like the top options are Namecheap(budget), bluehost, dreamhost?
@Craylor4 жыл бұрын
If you're on a budget, it's a serious toss up between Namecheap or Dreamhost. I think it's about finding what works best for you. I loved Namecheap when I started out because I like the "cPanel" hosting experience, but as my traffic grew, Namecheap couldn't provide me the reliability I needed, so I switched to Cloudways and WP Engine. If you aren't tied to cPanel, I would almost be swayed to say try Dreamhost first - reason is I feel they offer superior support to Namecheap, and they offer an automatic refund if you cancel within 30 days, so it's super easy to get your money back and try Namecheap or elsewhere if it's not right for you.

At 16:17 you mentioned that cloudways allows users to duplicate a website and make changes without affecting the site that is actually live. Is there a way to do something like this with cpanel? I have a site that's running on some outdated site builder and want to switch to wordpress, but I also don't want to lose what is already up until I am actually ready to make a new wordpress page go live. Your advice is appreciated!
@Craylor4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! There's not an easy way to create a staging environment in cPanel. You could copy the website files and database manually to a subdomain in the File Manager, but when you're ready to swap it to the live site, you have to copy the files again. So basically, it's possible but not easy. If you absolutely need staging capabilities, I would strongly consider Cloudways. The other route would be to use a plugin like BlogVault to utilize staging environments on your existing cPanel hosting.
@alexandrazapatamultimedia4 жыл бұрын
@@Craylor thank you so much for replying!! I called my hosting service and they basically said the same thing, that I would manually have to copy and paste files in the file manager to the live page. Many shared hosting providers offer LiteSpeed and NVMe SSD storage using modern hardware servers, and they can easily outperform the top plans from Cloudways. The Cloudways provides services through shared cloud service configurations with low-grade server equipment that much cheaper dedicated service providers easily beat in performance metrics. Ironically, many bloggers try to present Cloudways as a top provider of VPS accounts instead of a more realistic positioning of their services as a low grade, overpriced shared hosting. A detailed explanation is given in the review paper at www.webwhim.co.uk/how-to-select-a-wordpress-hosting-provider/#Cloudways

Hi Victor, Thanks for sharing this information, it's definitely insightful. I must say that I have had nothing but great experiences from Cloudways and have been a happy customer for over a year, but I will keep this in mind when evaluating Cloudways vs. other hosting options going forward.

hostinger 24/7 support ARE YOU JOKING thats just wrong
@Craylor4 жыл бұрын
I have experienced a decline in support with Hostinger. In this comparison, I knocked them down to a highly "budget" host in my books, but next time I make a comparison and re-evaluate, I may end up removing them entirely.
