Hey this might sound like a dumb question, but I get really nervous in outfield and I'm afraid sometimes when the ball is hit to me. Are there ways to calm your nerves out there or try and prepare yourself better for when a ball comes your way?
@UltimateBaseballTraining
@UltimateBaseballTraining 6 жыл бұрын
Make sure you're taking slow, deep breaths. Focus on the hitting zone and don't try to follow the ball from the pitcher's hand to the plate... too much for your eyes to track. Try to get as many reps as possible in practice. When your team is taking on field BP, work on your jumps and tracking down balls. You'll get more comfortable the more you work on it!

Hey thanks so so much! I really appreciate you taking time to reply to me sorry that I didn’t get back to you right away. You’re a really good teacher! Thanks so much for the tips these definitely helped me a lot! You’re right, I was looking at too many things happening instead of just watching the ball come off he bat. I felt a lot more comfortable out there and taking that initial step backwards in the outfield was so helpful when tracking the ball! Thanks a lot brother!

Repetition will build your confidence, but most important is to be patient with yourself. Baseball is more about how your mindset evolves when you fail than when you prevail. One of the most important lessons I had to learn when I was a youth came from one of my coaches that helped me to understand this process. He would yell out "Flush It" as he encouraged me to be ready for whatever came next. He taught me to have a healthier and shorter memory of any particular mistake or failure. With that same process came a great reduction of my anxiety before I would be involved in or make a play, and just as important, I gained confidence in my skills as they too increased.

Coach, if a ball is hit to the outfield and a runner is trying to score, is there a rule of thumb of when to throw all the way home, or hit the cutoff man so he can make the throw home.. Thanks in advance.
@danieltree8553
@danieltree8553 7 жыл бұрын
george pina I'm not a coach, but I'm a player. What I would do is dependant on what the play is. If it's a run that could take the lead early or late... try to throw to the cut off man (if you have an okay arm) so he can redirect it home. If you have a good arm then go ahead and throw to home! If it's a run that breaks a shut out but your still winning by a lot (ex: 11-1) then just throw to the cut off, there's nothing to lose!

What’s ur opinion on sliding to get to a hard hit ground ball in the gap with runners on base
@u.sgrant7526
@u.sgrant7526 6 ай бұрын
I love this move for a hard ground ball into the gap on my glove side (which would be right-center for me as a right-handed centerfielder). It gets my body infront of the ball and my eyes at a perfect level to see the ball and make the grab. I feel like the transition is also faster as I can pop up right after the slide instead of having to break down and change directions. But obviously you gotta assess the elements and how you're gonna field it. If the grass is too dry or it's hit to your bare-hand side, it may not be a comfortable play.

Justin, is there a progression for hitting the cut off man for very young .e.g. 9 year olds in their first year of kid pitch. Arms are not that strong and I have trouble seeing them do all the adjustments and movements that kids a little older and advanced can do. From my experience there are very few plays at home. Lots of walks so,runners on base all the time. Should I just emphasize getting a ball hit to the outfield back in to an appropriate base. Comments from others welcome. I am coaching little league minors, mostly 9 year olds in their first year of kids pitch.

oDarlyyyn It is totally 100% fine to have an infielder glove in the outfield. As long as you can catch then it's okay. What I do recommend though is to get a big glove like a 13 inch (if you can buy a new glove) so you'll be able to play better in the infield AND outfield. Then again, the only reason there's a difference between an infielder and outfielder glove is so your able to perform better with the glove corresponding to the infield or outfield (whichever one you are at)
@braxtonscarbrough5713
@braxtonscarbrough5713 5 жыл бұрын
yeah just don't use a 12.75 or 13 inch in middle inf/3b trust me it doesn't work well cause it's hard to field cleanly/feel it in your glove and find it

@UltimateBaseballTraining
@UltimateBaseballTraining 6 жыл бұрын
Not from the outfield. For a right-handed thrower, you either want to step with your left foot and field the ball slightly outside your foot, or step with your right foot and field the ball in the middle of your stance.
@Hawk48686
@Hawk48686 5 жыл бұрын
Ultimate Baseball Training You want to learn to field the ball off your glove side foot. (And yes, the outside of the foot, not inside) If it doesn’t feel comfortable, practice it until it does. Fielding off your arm side foot adds an extra step to your crow hop, which means it takes that much longer to get rid of the ball. If you have the mindset that every step you take as an outfielder is 3 steps to the base runner, you will then understand how important it is to eliminate steps to get rid of the ball faster. (Justin, you somewhat teach this concept when fielding a ball off the wall, but the concept holds true in all aspects of fielding.) Also, this whole concept of fielding the ball off your arm side foot to help protect yourself against bad hops is inaccurate. First off, (assuming a right handed thrower) if the bad hop bounces to the right, it’s bouncing into your body, regardless of which foot you field from. And if the ball bounces to the left, it’s bouncing away from your body, regardless of the foot you field from. If anything, you’ll end up getting more bad hops fielding from your arm side because you’ll have a tendency to field the ball deeper in your stance versus fielding it out in front from your glove side like you should. If the player is in fact fielding the ball too deep, then he will inadvertently be slowing down his momentum through the throw, which is never a good thing. Secondly, it’s called a Do or Die for a reason. You either field it clean to give yourself a chance to throw the guy out (Do) or you don’t (Die.) If you don’t field it clean, it doesn’t really matter where that ball ends up, because your only objective was to try to throw the guy out. Clearly there are a lot of scenarios where the game is still going on and you don’t want to let the ball roll to the fence, but that is a risk you are taking when trying to attempt a Do or Die. If you understand the situations, have proper technique and did a good job of evaluating your terrain in the outfield, you will be able to eliminate many of the risks, including bad hops, associated with a Do or Die play. Thirdly, a step behind is typically much faster than a traditional crow hop. With a traditional crow hop players have a tendency to “hop” and therefore will spend effort moving upwards and completely eliminating any momentum they had built up. Using a step behind will allow you to efficiently use your momentum in the direction of your throw and it doesn’t take nearly as long. Watch any “Top MLB Outfield Throwing Plays” video from KZbin and you find that almost all the players field off their glove side foot and do a step behind crow hop.
@bfee20021
@bfee20021 5 жыл бұрын
@@Hawk48686 Most of this is incorrect. Most coaches teach glove hand side but in a do or die situation, the momentum will prevent you from fielding glove hand side AND still have momentum and accuracy. Try it.
