Hello Karate Fam!
This is my experience of a very special training!
Rick Hotton Sensei & Melissa Bell Sensei led a hybrid Shotokan Karate/Aikido Seminar hosted by Sensei Karen MacDonald's Dojo 'Petaluma Karate Club'. It was an honor to participate once again and train with the magnificent Rick Hotton Sensei. It was an even greater privilege to be Sensei Hotton’s “Uke” (partner) for the majority of his demonstrations. He truly has been one of my mentors over the last few years, and has greatly influenced my karate training and views on martial arts as a whole. Also, it was my first time meeting Melissa Bell Sensei. Bell Sensei has a gentle spirit, yet her Aikido can be crushing when she chooses--embodying an ancient Japanese Martial Arts precept, of the sword that can take away life, while also having the choice to give or restore life.
I learned so much, and look forward to future encounters with the Sunday Morning Keiko community, stay tuned!
Oss,
Jason

Great to see the use of Karate & Aikido combined training concepts expanding. Have trained this way many years ago and it was an extremely effective combination that just worked hand in hand with each art. Thanks for posting, look forward to seeing more. Oss.

It is said that the karate kata: Gojushiho, was a karate masters interpretation of Aikijujitsu techniques. Gojushiho movement is quite similar with Aikido grappling technique in terms of flowing knife hand or "tate-shuto-uke" or vertical knife hand block. "Tate-shuto-uke" does not resemble other shuto uke which resemble as "block technique". Rather it was throwing technique in "aiki-jujutsu". Another "shuto" technique as "shuto-nagashi-uke" or "knife-hand-flowing-block" has become the unique characteristic of Gojushiho because of flowing movement which is not merely interpreted as "block", but "throw". A few years after receiving my nidan in Shotokan, in the late 1970s, I began training in aikido under the late Shihan Mitsu Yamashita. Self-discipline had always come easy to me and my friends would say that I practiced "Shotokan" Aikido, meaning that I did my aikido with a Shotokan mentality. (The same would be said about my yoga training, decades later.) Besides my karate club at a local community college, I had a teaching obligation at our central dojo, where I also continued my training in the black belt classes. The chief instructor found out that I was training in aikido and one day, called me into his office where he "demonstrated" why the best karate training was more karate! I tried to explain to him that aikido stances were designed to re-direct power, not to deliver it. He ignored that and continued to basically beat the shit out of me! Lesson learned! Keep my dual training to myself. I'm delighted to see that Hotton Sensei had a similar but not as traumatic of a path.

Excellent presentation and fusion of the Arts. I practise traditional Karate(IOGKF). I could compare IOGKF as a film camera while such new age fusion styles as digital cameras. It is good for young practioners to explore and evolve. However, at 65, I take comfort in the old school of Karate as it blends with traditional Japanese and Indian philosophies of Wabi - Sabi, Kintsugi and Yoga.

Rick Hotton is one of the most amazing Karate practitioners & teachers. I've been following him for years & hopefully one day get to meet him & attend a seminar. Hopefully he comes to New Zealand / Aotearoa one day. He's like the less aggressive version of Andre Bertel 😅

Haha, yes, this is the second time I've trained with Sensei Rick Hotton. He is a wizard of his craft, truly. You mentioned, Andre Bertel, and let me say I've seen many videos of him online, and will say he seems very competent. I'd say the main difference between Andre Bertel and Hotton Sensei is that Bertel Sensei embodies more of the hard style of martial arts, which to me at least, relies a bit more on youth and athleticism. Don't get me wrong, Bertel sensei is still what it seems a highly technical and proficient martial artist. Hotton Sensei on the other hand, embodies more of the soft style of martial arts. He incorporates a lot of Aikido principles, to not fight fire with fire, but to present a yielding mindset to attackers. To me this is not weak karate, it is very refined, efficient, and perhaps the highest form, as it aims to not rely on strength of the body, but instead high proficiency of technique and understanding of energy.

Sensei, I know your body was sore after being tossed over and over. In minute 5.24, I've practice a variation of the technique in the demonstration. From the beginning of Sandan when you block with the morote uke, then use the nukite and step in, spin to take down instead of spinning and throwing a uraken. Very insightful video, Thanks for all your posting your guidance has continuously helped me improve..

Hello brother, thank you for taking the time to comment. Haha, yes! You are correct I was very sore from being tossed around, but I believe if Hotton Sensei did not exhibit his superior technique and control, I would've been seriously injured instead of just sore. I will have to look into the Heian Sandan bunkai, to try to practice the technique you were describing. Appreciate the kind words! OSS!

Aikido gets a bad rap, and that's largely because of the person who made it crazy popular has become a bit of a cartoonish figure, rightly or wrongly. I however, love the philosophy of Aikido. The Dojos are always so clean, and the participants seem to mostly be reasonably good people. I am for sure going to train in it one day. I also love the specificity of the techniques. It seems to me, that the techniques are well defined for what you need to know. In other words, the scope is well defined.

Aikido in theory is the highest route that a martial artist can achieve. Being able to manipulate your opponents energy, fighting fire with water, effortless, and maximum efficiency. However, I believe less than 1% of martial artists ever reach this pinnacle, but still a great journey to embark on.

@ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL
@ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL Жыл бұрын
Let me ask you, when you practice technique, are you going to practice the sloppiest version of that technique, or the most labored inefficient version of the technique? My answer is no. Of course you should have solid fundamentals to start with, but as you progress you want to aim to achieve superior technique with minimal effort. Does this always work? No. It takes years to achieve that level of mastery and finesse. If it doesn’t always work, and takes years to master why practice it? This is what separates a fighter who just wants to kick and punch a bag or human, between a martial artist that strives for perfection of technique, and character.

I understand your reasoning, however, if we as martial artists chose to rely purely on muscle, strength, and size we would be defeating the point of learning a martial art. The pinnacle of martial arts practice is maximum output/force with minimal effort. Of course in the street no one will willingly yield to you and accept a fall or intercepting technique. But being able to combine your strength with the finesse and efficiency of aikido principles will be more beneficial than purely trying to muscle your way out or fight fire with fire. But as you said, I agree that a word of caution should be mentioned to practitioners, especially beginners or those new to the arts.

@@ULTIMATEKARATEOFFICIAL That's a really nice way of putting it. I realise my comment could seem disrespectful and rude. I meant no offense. Aikido may be the "highest form" of combat. We just shouldn't let beginners expect to much practicality or immediate transfer to fighting skills.
