Gain a better understanding of pool demolition and how to prepare a pool for plaster as Mike takes you through one of his jobs where traditional plaster chipping is employed. Plaster chipping employs pneumatic pistols and rivet busters to separate the old plaster from the gunite shell

@@UltimatePoolGuy Thanks for responding. I have gotten a couple places to give me quotes for some work on a replaster. The guys in my area don't seem to do a full chip out of the plaster, and only want to do chipping where its hollow, about an inch or two below tile line, and around fittings. Is this something to worry about? Also, a lot of my coping stones sound a bit hollow, even where the bond beam behind them do not seem to show any cracks. Is this still something worth tearing up and replacing? There are some places behind the tile where the bond beam does seem to have have some cracking. Is this something that can be repaired from the face or will I need to pull the coping up and redo the bond beam undernearth?
@UltimatePoolGuy
@UltimatePoolGuy 4 жыл бұрын
on the limited plaster chipping that is another method...obviously less thorough...and then it will probably be a scratch coat or bond coat on the rest of the un chipped areas is my guess...this is a weaker bond but may be the best you can get for your region/area on the hollow coping stones...yes you want to pull those up and make repairs / level those out where needed...knock on the tile like knocking on a door and you will heat the hollow areas that need attention left unattended and these can pull up over time ...same with hollow coping pieces and blisters in the plaster finish

@@UltimatePoolGuy Thanks for the second reply. The pool guy quoted doing minimal chipping and an acid wash, and then Bond Kote before a 3/8 - 5/8" plaster topping. Re-reading the quote, I am imagining there will be very little chipping unfortunately. For the cost being asked, its hard for me to justify the price knowing its being subcontracted anyway. My coping stones are close to 30 years old, so I may go ahead and replace them with the new brick style out there. I am afraid to pull them up and break something that will be irreplaceable. I think a majority of them have a hollow sound anyway. I am pretty handy, so I think I will do the tile, coping, and bond beam fixes myself. Thanks to guys like you, I have the knowledge to do it. One other question I have, is if the bond beam is cracked a bit, is that something I can repair without pulling the coping stones and adding cement where the tile face is, or does it need to be repaired from the top and coping out of the way?

@@UltimatePoolGuy i know this is a question you probably get all the time, on a 24k kidney size pool, around what range could a complete re-plaster be if pebble tec and the contractor is very fair?

Right now prices have changed a lot due to material and labor costs in the pandemic and the current market out there White plaster with demolition should be somewhere between $40 and $50 a linear foot and a pebble finish should be something like 60 to $70 a linear foot right now there's companies charging up to $80 and linear foot for Pebble installation these prices are for Los Angeles area Feel free to email me here if you need more ultimatepoolguy@gmail.com

some say you don't do a full chip out unless there have been 2 replasters over the original plaster; what is your recommendation?
@UltimatePoolGuy
@UltimatePoolGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Delamination, calcium volcanoes, blistering With each layer the bond gets weaker When spending the money and approaching this level of work I think it's appropriate to chip out every single time for a quality job

However when I am dealing with Real Estate Investors that are trying to flip houses and they want work done cheaply we do layer plaster on top of plaster I do not categorize this as a tier-one job That process is called brown coat or scratch coat It is not as well done of a job

Awesome vid my dad was hiring a guy to replaster his pool but told him no need to chip out pool or do any demo. Every single video I've seen of a pool being replastered I see that they chip away. Just for draining the pool acid cleaning the guy said or prepping pool and putting a unnoticeable amount of plaster would cost my dad $4k. This does not sound right to me also pool has not been replastered in over +20 years we don't exact amount because that's how long my dad has had the house and never done any work to the pool except acid cleaning it. Any advice I would appreciate it. Also I told my dad to tell the guy to hold off cause it don't seem right. $4k for basically no work sounds fishy..

OK folks. Not to write a book here but I am the original owner of a 20ft x 40ft x 25ft (freeform somewhat in the shape of a lazy "L") plaster over shotcrete pool built by Sylvan (now Sylvan/Anthony...a very large builder on the east coast of the USA) in 1988. That's almost 35 years. I am still on the original plaster. Other than some discoloration, some roughening of the surface (now comparable to maybe 100 grit sandpaper) and tile pop-offs here and there along the water line (which I repair as they happen), everything is still in good shape. A replastering for me would primarily be cosmetic. This talk of needing to replaster every 3 to 7 years or whatever is nonsense (maybe not said in this video but other ones on youtube like it). More importantly, this chipping out of the old plaster down to the foundation is absolutely ridiculous AND dangerous. You take a risk of the pool breaking simply by draining the pool. Hacking away at its shell with shock-inducing power tools is an even bigger risk. Take a look at this video. Those guys need jackhammers to get the plaster off. WTF? If it's on that tight, leave it alone. The only time you should be effectively SCRAPING it off is if it's delaminating and chipping off on its own like old paint. You DO NOT remove a plaster shell that is strongly adhered to the foundation. But hey...what do I know. Maybe get your information instead from the "pool expert" videos on youtube like the guys with "20 years of tiling experience" who apply thinset to a completely dry (and dusty) concrete base in the baking sun when doing a tile repair job. Yeah...like that's going to stick for any length of time. Experts my a*s.

@UltimatePoolGuy
@UltimatePoolGuy 4 ай бұрын
Scratch coat is acceptable in some regions of the United States There's a limited amount of times that you can do scratch coat layers on top of each other before a pool eventually needs to be chipped out anyways Scratch coat pools also have weaker bond strength between the layers versus a pool that has been demoed and fresh materials applied The methods you see here in the video are what is widely used and accepted for Los Angeles California 👍

I'm not sure it's just how it's always been done It's a way to get a measurement on a swimming pool that is not square footage such as flooring or carpeting There have been instances where the pool is very large and I've charged additional money for the work in those situations Hope this helps

A point on the jack hammer will make for a very poor job. Most cases, I've experienced I have to go over all the high spots these guys leave on the hit and miss method . Its impossible to do a clean chip-out the way these guys do it. That goes for the walls too. The chip-out industry has gone to shitsville ! A quality chip-out is crucial prior to the plastering. This cat make makes it sound like its rocket science. When a home owner asks me whats up with the hit and miss ? I assure them that I will take care of it...Its really a shame what these guys get away with, and if you complain they wont work for you again. Its a lose, lose situation. 😢
