Back in the day cost of projectiles was a pretty significant drawback of the 500 for people who would actually want to do some shooting and who don’t cast. Glad to see it’s become popular enough to support reasonably priced components.
@trg37612 жыл бұрын
I have a BHA lever action in 500S&W mag. I reload and cast bullets for it. It then become's much cheaper to shoot. The 500 in a rifle also gives 300 fps more speed than a hand gun.

You might get a box of water soaked paper to place at the back of the two ballistic gel blocks. Like two blocks being like fat layer and skin. And box of water soaked paper being muscle layer.

love the berrys 350s. They shoot extremely well out of my 8inch. out to 200yard predictably.

I've been loading the berrys 350 for years with h110. I love 40gn seated at 1.970. There a but kicker. My favorite is loading them with 14.2gn of trail boss seated at cannular. Very comfortable load that you can shoot all day long.
@the.real.Black30611 ай бұрын
My load is similar; 40gr of H110 with a COL of 2.000". Berry's recommendation of 2.100" seemed too long and was concerned with load density being too low especially with H110.

I have a 500 with the 4" barrel, and this 350 Berry PFP, along with Montana Bullet Works 350 FNGC, are two of my favorite bullets. I load them over either SR-4759 or IMR-4227 for modest loads; around 1200 fps. Nice and easy shooting and accurate. I've loaded a 370 FNGC to about 1450 fps, and it's strong load. Plus the usual assortment of Hornadys, Noslers, Speers, Barnes, and Sierra. All great shooters.

I would be really interested in different 350 gr (like xtp). All the parameters like load, velocity, gel test, accuracy etc. I harvested several deer with a copper plated semi wad cutter in my 44 mag in N. Idaho, 25 years ago. I now have a 500 with a scope, 8-3/8” barrel.

Question... What's the optimum barrel length for a 500 S&W magnum revolver? What barrel length is needed to burn all the powder in the barrel where it does the most good instead burning the ring of fire after the bullet has already left the gun? The Speer 325 gn HP's I use in my Big Horn Amory Model 89 seem to be wasted in my S&W Performance Center 3.5" model.

Gavin, I tried this load with my 500, Berrys bullets 350 grain with cannelure and 40 grains of H110....most all shot ok but had one today where the shell got stuck in the cylinder. Had to get it out with a brass rod at home. Nothing bulged on the shell but too much black for my liking on the shell especially near the mouth and a half inch back and a few grains of powder came out with the shell...any idea?

What load do you use for Hodgdon lil’gun?
@alaskagundad7140 Жыл бұрын
I tried this load in mixed cases. The Hodgdon data for the XTP dose not directly correlate to the Berry’s. They have their crimp groove in different places changing the internal volume and C. O. L. The Speer 350 grain bullet is allot closer to the Berry’s. There data reflects that in C. O. L. And max charge weight. I am testing in a factory 4” model (3” of rifled barrel). I have found using the faster burning powder Power Pistol gave me better results in my shorter barrel with mixed cases.
@SerranoBullets2 ай бұрын
I have a lot of power pistol, do you remember your data? I think the starting load was 23-24 right?
@alaskagundad71402 ай бұрын
Alliant lists a load for a 350 gr Speer bullet at 27 gr of power pistol and dose not give a cartridge overall length. The top load I have tried with the Berry’s 350 gr plated bullets in my 4” Smith is. 26.0gr of power pistol. My extream spread and standard deviations were lower at 25 grains but I think I am sticking with the 26 gn load. 4” .500 S&W, 350 grain Berry’s bullet, CCI# 250 LRM, 26.0 grains power pistol, 2.060” C.O.L. , mixed used cases. 18 degrees F, 10 round test. Low of 1364. High of 1412. Average of 1391. Extreme spread of 48. Standard deviation of 15.1.

@@alaskagundad7140do you know what your neck size is? I measured mine at 5.17 and was getting some decent creep. I don’t wanna go too deep and cut into the plating too much..😓
@alaskagundad7140Ай бұрын
I don’t know a way to quantify how much crimp I put on the rounds. I do try a few then use an impact bullet puller then inspect the bullets. I have used several different Berry’s bullets and have never crimped enough to affect the plating in any noticeable way. I think they just put that in there to protect themselves from the small number of folks who go way overboard. Crimp try repeat.
@alaskagundad7140 Жыл бұрын
I tried duplicating this load using mixed shot brass all trimmed to length. I used CCI #250 lmr primer. All charges were trickled and weighed. I tested them in a 4” Smith revolver at 31 degrees F. And got wild variations in velocity readings. I tested another load before and again after the Berry’s 350gr 40.0 grains of H 110. So my lab radar appears to be functioning properly. I seated to an overall length of 2.058” and crimped. Since the Hodgdon data states an OAL of 1.985” and I seated longer than that with mixed brass could that explain an extreame spread of 279 fps with a SD of 105.5? On the same day I had a different .500 load using titegroup and 350 grain xtp’s in the same mixed cases and primers that gave a very impressive ES of 9 and a SD of 3.2. Any thoughts on what could be the cause(s) would be appreciated.

@r.awilliams98152 жыл бұрын
Pull the bullets and replace the powder charge with 14 grains of Titegroup. That should give a 440 grain cast bullet about 1050-1100 fps from your barrel and be a lot more tolerable to shoot. That is still a very deadly load on deer and hogs should you be so inclined.

You could actually load it way higher than 40gns of H110 if you’re sizing the round to the Cannelure and crimping it there. If you notice the cannelure is really low on the projectile versus other 350gn bullets which allows less of the bullet to be inside the brass and more to be sticking out past the end of the case. This is why I’m not a huge fan of these bullets because you aren’t getting as much of the bullet inside the neck and it’s prone to unseating itself from the recoil of the gun. I’m able to fit 44gns of H110 easily in a Starline case with the berrys and It’s still not close to being compressed.
@SpeKterDesigns2 жыл бұрын
Id like to see the 500 against the 460 with bullets and charge that gave them the same power output at the muzzle (so assume different velocity and bullet weight), it would hardly be affected by the distance to gell blocks and finally we can see with even a recoil calculation what it takes to get the same amount of power on target and what that means for penetration, bullets. charges and even cost can be a factor in that if people are going to say use that caliber in a carbine to take some Hogs (perhaps a little overkill but a lot of people take a little revenge into the field against the Hogs especially here in Australia)

Great topic gents. Great offering in cartridge & gun. It will be great if you could develop a really good hunting load and harvest big game with it. Just an opinion but I would encourage considering Pachmayr Diamond Grip. I have been handloading & hunting with various 44 magnum revolvers(mainly S&W) since 1985 and this is the best recoil reducer of all the grips I have ever used. The factory Hogue grips are serviceable but the Diamond Grip is far superior in my opinion. Thanks a bundle.
