I have hunted South Africa (I am a SA citizen) with my 30-06 for 20+ years. You cannot go wrong with it. We just got back from our first hunt of winter and the 30-06 did it's work perfectly. One big kudu bull (250m) and a red hartbeest (330m) with two rounds. Both were heart shots and neither animal went more than 20m. I use 165gr Nosler Accubonds at around 2850fps and it has never failed me on large animals in SA. Enjoy your trip and travel safe.

Good luck on your hunt. Trust me, it will not be your last. The 30-06 is the perfect plains game cartridge. I take a pre-64 M70 that has been in the hands of 3 generations of Africa hunters. Finally going to be back in Zim this August after 2 years of cancelled trips.
@cecilguinard78282 жыл бұрын
That's definitely a fantastic rifle using a cartridge that has stood the test of time, I'm also using 30.06 shooting accubond 168s in a 1945 03a3 that is devastating on the far end.

I'm South African and I can truly say you are going to enjoy the hunt very much. The 30.06 package that you have there will be plenty enough to ensure good ethical hunting. That is the old trust worthy caliber to shoot almost anything you can find here. Can't wait to hear how your hunt went. I'm currently in the States for work and so wished I could also be back home hunting. Missing my whole hunting season but heck try and make a plan for late season hunt.

Limpopo bushveld. .30-06, 180 gr. Partition @ 2700 fps. 2.5-8x36mm scope and left it on 2.5 setting. 5 animals, largest being Kudu. All one-shot kills. Shot distances from 50 to 200 yards. Shooting tip - don't take forever to squeeze the trigger. Get it up on the sticks, aim small, and shoot! Those animals didn't get big and old by being slow to react. Good luck and good hunt!

I am hunting in S Africa and Namibia for 30 years and after many calibres in cluding 30-06 I found the 300wsm as the best planes allrounder. The US hunters with the most success on planes used 338 Win Mag.

Hi Guy, we had a lot of rain in SA, so the bush is very dense, you will most likely shoot under 150 m in the north of the country. Just remember SA has very different habitats. The Karoo and central part of the country is open, and you might have to shoot a bit further. Importantly don’t underestimate the toughness of Oryx and Wildebeest. They are hard as hell. 30-06 is fine for the most plain game, you might be a little bit lite for Eland personally, I shoot 180gn out of my 30-06, but that is just me. Last weekend a buddy of mine dropped a monster Wildebeest with a 6.5 Creedmore, all about shot placement. So enjoy your hunt and remember there are a lot of beautiful places in SA. You might want to extend your stay and have a bit of a holiday as well.

Hi from Gauteng South Africa. The weather will be cold (for us for you not so much) but when the sun comes out. It will warm you nicely. So warm clothing but light enough to take off. A light long sleve shirt like the prs guys wear is great for keeping cool and keeping the sun off you. And it will be sunny. The weather here is maybe the best winter weather in the world. From other videos texas seems to have very similar weather to here. My favourite fact for Americans is that suppressors are an over the counter purchase here. However firearms are about as hard to license as suppressors are for you. You can't buy ammunition without a corresponding license. The altitude in the highveld is around 1500 feet above sea level so your loads may perform a little differently to lower altitudes. ( pieter malan travels between capetown and gauteng and shoots both maybe reach out and ask him for what changes) You will also be surprised by how built up it is. Johannesburg is a BIG city, people are friendly. You're going to have a magnificent time here.

I am a retired SA PH of 18 years , I carried a Ruger 77 Mk2 in 06 as my back up rifle with hand loaded 220Gr Sako Hammerheads . For my personal hunting I used the same rifle with hand loaded Hornady 150 or 165 Gr Interbonds . My point of impact was only about one inch different on the vertical plane so I was able to use all three out to nearly 300 metres without adjusting my scope . Your calibre and bullet weight was my recommendation to clients as well . The 30 cal and 7mm Magnums are also ideal .

Another South African here! 30-06 is probably the sweet spot! I've used a 308 with heavy-ish bullets and taken a few Wildebeest and Kudu. 243 win is also the right stuff for things like impala, blesbuck and springbok👍🏼 Depending where in the country you go your hunting with differ. Up north will be thicker brush, so most likely shooting 50-120 metres and if you are in the Eastern cape or more central you might get some longer shots out to maybe 350 metres👍🏼

used a 25-06 for plains game running 117 grn SST at 2900 fps. Howa 1500 action, Boyds AT - One Stock, with Suppressor and 6x24 Tourex Vector Optic FFP. Shot everything from spring buck to Blue Wildebeest. 30-06 we normally load 180 grn soft points (took a eland bull), of the 18 animals taken last year 10 of those were with the 25-06. for thicker bush areas i would opted for the 30-06 but in the plains had no issues with the 25-06. In august this year we are back to the free state to hunt again. Welcome to South Africa, you will really enjoy the trip.....

I used a Ruger American Predator chambered in .30-06 with a suppressor. I shot 180 grain Barnes Vor-Tx TTSX bullets and all animals but one were one shot kills. The Gemsbok was at 311 meters sharply quartering away and the first shot got both lungs, I took a second shot that went through both lungs and took out the opposite shoulder. I am excited to see what the CX bullets do for you

I am also a South African, hunting with a 30-06 Winchester XPR. I took a Kudu of 57,4” at 146 meters with a 180gr Peregrine monolithic bullet which is locally manufactured. Two weekends later a Zebra at 109 meters. Both one shot kills. My friend and I also hunt with 6.5 Grendel for Impala and Warthogs with 129gr Hornady Interbonds. Bottom line, it is all about shot placing. My first animal, Blue wildebeest or Gnu, I shot with a 30-06 Mauser with a PMP 168gr bullet, also a one shot kill. 30-06 is the correct caliber for what you want to shoot. You will enjoy your stay and good luck.

Live an hunt in SA , if your going to the bushveld, the heavy rounds work well and 3006 will work well, i hunt 270 and 3006 shot wildebees last year with 180 gr barnes only reason went so heavy was we were suppose to go eland hunting , so i tried the 180 to see on wildebees , he was shot on shoulder and dropped on the spot, you can go lighter if you shooting springbok or impala, i use 130gr out the 270 for the 300m plus shots instead of the heavier 3006 ammo for bullet drop as its almost impossible to range springbok, have fun and waiting to see footage of the hunt, i luv hunting bushveld always reminds me of wild old africa.

My go to firearm is a CRF, post '64, left hand , Win Mod 70 with 165gr Nosler Partitions, moving about 2800fps. Never had a problem with the rifle or the load. Ranges have been 70m to 224m. Almost everything, except for wildebeest, have been one shot and down. The 100yr old '06 is more than capable for plains game. Weather is strange this year, we are having a true Indian Summer, highs in the Western Cape of 75 +/- during the day! However, plan for it being a bit cooler. Good luck and have fun!

Im in Port Elizabeth, South Africa right now on a 4 month hunt. I do not recommend bringing rifles to S A. I use rifles of friends and P H's. Most of my hunts are with a .30-'06 rifle with 150gn bullets (Speer Grand Slams are a favorite). We also use S A made Rhino bullets (all copper monoliths). The longest shot ever was 270 meters on an Eland, most hunting shots here are at 75-175 meters. I dont consider long range shooting (I never say long range hunting, it is not hunting) ethical. Remember the old Scottish hunter in Africa, 'Get ye close as ye can then get ye 10 yards closer, laddie.' You can bring ALL the bullets and brass in your checked baggage you want. Find out what they need and bring for them....... S A law requires the airline to not charge you for the first two checked bags (50 pounds) so bring gear for trading. Most items here are twice the cost of in the USA (like Nikon Monarch Binos). $350 Nikon binos will cost $700 here. You can sell them then for cost and get a free hunt from your new friend.

You might think you have a big kill zone, but shot placement on Koedoe and Wildebees is key. You will walk your legs off if you hit the lungs to far back. Personally I use 180gr from Gemsbok upwards in my 30-06. Was my one and only rifle for 15yrs before I bought a .243. Before that I took everything from Springbuck to Eland in the Bushveld, Kalahari, Freestate and Lowveld with my 30-06.

Hi Guy, I'm really excited for your hunting trip to South Africa. As I grew up hunting in Africa, I would like to make one suggestion. From your conversation with Gavin I know that you want to keep things simple, but may I suggest that you consider a variable power scope with a magnification range of say 4 to 16. Hunting in South Africa can be really diverse and I sincerely believe that having a little more of a range of magnification can end up enriching your experience. You can't go wrong with the 30-06 in the proposed configuration though! Enjoy and stay safe!

I live and hunt in South Africa, been using .308 win for most of my hunts with a 150gr Barnes TTSX on game from Impala +- 25kg to Blue Wildebeest +- 100kg’s and even Eland 200kg plus dependent on type. Many might say that 308 or 3006 might be getting on the lighter side. Big 5 is 375 H&H or bigger. Last thing to mention is that whilst SA is not that big conditions and terrain varies quite a bit. Depending on where you go hunt it might be very thick bush. For the most part we had a very good rainy season so makes for a tuff hunt but the game is in great condition. Some of the more western areas in the Cape / Kalahari you have must more open flat terrain and flatter shooting rifle with longer shot might be common. But listen to your PH sounds like more bush type terrain.

Oh … layers of clothing. Whilst you might not get the extreme cold/snow you guys get in the US you could see negative C temp early mornings or on the back of a vehicle to mid 20’s C in the sun hiking up a hill. I have mostly hunted with a suppressor an I have found that the shot tends to spook less of the other animals and makes follow up shots easier. Lastly enjoy !

Good luck Guy on your hunt I think you picked out a good load 4350 with about 54-55 grains has always been a good one for me. I love the 165 gr. bullets for hunting.

Guy, have a great hunt in Africa with your 30-06! Legendary cartridge!
@pieterolivier60572 жыл бұрын
Hi Guy, I'm from South 🇿🇦, and hunt with a 30-06 as my go to for plains and bush, on the smaller antelope I load 168gr, which is the 06's sweet spot an on wildebeest, kudu size of antelope I load 180gr. Depending on the terrain bush or plains also plays an important role. But is you are looking for plains game, I would upper on the class to atleast 12-16 magnification.

I am a South African and hunt regularly with a 30-06 Brno or my son's Tikka African Hunter with a "Mute" Supressor ( we call it a Silencer). The Supressor makes a huge difference in sound and felt recoil and ACCURACY.. YES ACCURACY!. South African animals are tough.. especially Blue Wildebees.. I have seen MANY of them run away after receiving a good chest shots with standard non-BONDED 165/180 gr bullets. I will NOT shoot at one without using bonded (180gr) or Monolothic (165/180 gr) bullets.

Good video! I just got back from South Africa last week. All my shots are 60 yards and in, except my kudu ( 110 yards) .I did a plains game hunt and took ; kudu, impala, warthog,gemsbok,zebra,blue wildebeest all with my PH’s 375 H&H magnum ( Model 70). If you go in April thats the start of the rut for the kudu , and if you go in June , it’s winter there. Nice 45 degrees in the morning and high of 60 in the afternoon. I’m booked for next year in April , going for giraffe and similar game.

My first hunt was last year. Took a Young Kudu Bull and a Impala Ewe. Winchester XPR in 30.06, 24in barrel, Sierra Game Kings 180gr. No speed test done about probably around 2550fps - lighter load. This year I'll be switching to a Locally produced bullet.. Ballistix Huntec 175grain Monolithic. All the best and have fun.

I took my 300 Win Mag to Mpumalanga province shooting 180gr AccuBonds. It took a Nyala, Black Wildebeest, Kudu, Impala, Gemsbok, Zebra and Red Hartebeest. We also took my dads 25-06 shooting 110 gr ELD-X and it took three Springbok, a Blesbok, several Jackals, a Zebra and an Impala.

Where you going to hunt in South Africa I live in Kimberley in the Northern Cape hunting in SA is always awesome
@waynemensen42522 жыл бұрын
7 mm mag, 7 plains game, Zebra, Kudu, Gemsbok. Barnes ttsx 150gr. I wish we would have gotten to taste more of them. Most were under 200 yds. Zebra was 265, I believe. I wish I had a note pad with to record distances. All rounds completely passed through the animals. They told us either entrance or exit, needs to hit the shoulder bone. Good luck. Wish I could go with.

I've hunted Australia, Zimbabwe (x2), RSA (x2), NZ (x2) and the UK. In Africa I used a .303, .22lr, .243 but mainly a 308W and 165 Woodleighs. My 9.3x62 for Eland. I've taken Gemsbok, Zebra, Blesbock, Impala, Red Hartebeast, Blue Wildebeast, Reed Buck, Eland, Kudu, Warthog, Black Wildebeast, Spring Hare and Porcupine. The set up you have is perfect. The only thing I would upgrade is your scope to a 6x42 with Euro glass like a Zeiss or similar. Your leupold will do the job but you need to use as much light as long as possible. Shots often need to be taken very quickly. Don't bother picking up your brass (practise leaving them as old habits are hard to lose) just Reload and watch your target.

I was lucky enough to go with my son and had a wonderful bucket list hunt. They only required we use at least a 180 grain bullet. Have a great hunt.🇿🇦🇺🇸👍 I think everyone had a 300 win mag of some sort in the group.
@babyhuey63422 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with the 165 grain weight for an all copper bullet. My best experiences with homogenous bullets has been dropping down a weight class compared to a lead core for the same game. They really need the extra velocity to open up.
@leeeng4782 жыл бұрын
Another reason to drop down in weight is accuracy. A 150 Barnes bullet is about the same length as a 165 lead core bullet. a 120gr ttsx 7mm bullet is siimliar to a 140 lead core and a .277 110 barnes ttsx is the same length as a 130 lead core. 120's shoot great in my 7x57. I have yet to find the 110 ttsx's for my 270 Win but I hear they are tack drivers up to 3,500 FPS grenades!. I am going to load 150 ttsx in my 30-06 in my Mod steven 200. This gun loves 150's and 165's but does not group 180' grain bullets so in theory my 165 bullets Barnes TTSX may not shoot since they are the same length as the 180's.
@leeeng4782 жыл бұрын
In addition Hornady bullets do not open up as well as Barnes they use two different types of copper process. Barnes is a copper only bullet manufacture and they have a better reputation for expansion at lower velocities still not as good as a lead core but definately better than a Hornady GMX or CX.
@peteee10676 ай бұрын
This is no longer the case. Thr CCx is softer apparently. In test expansion videos online, the 165cx expanded more than the 130ttsx travellimg alot faster. The alloy is softer than the GMX with a largwr cavity i believe. If you search up 165cx expansion on youtube and 130ttsx expansion, you will see a video comparing both at diffeent distances - the 130 3150fps and 165 3006 2800, the 165 had better expansion all round. Im still use the 130ttsx in my 3006 at 3200fps because flatter flying, and we dont get animals that require a 165 where I live
