I haven't even watched this yet, but as a 40 year fan of heavy metal, my Top 10 would be this: #1. Black Sabbath - Paranoid (not my favorite Sabbath album, but it basically defined and set the template for heavy metal and is probably the best introduction/gateway album and band for those unfamiliar with the genre) #2. Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East (most of their best songs done even better and heavier live) #3. Judas Priest - British Steel (just as Sabbath pretty much invented and defined the metal sound with Paranoid, Judas Priest redefined and reinvented it with this album and also set the template for speed/thrash metal with "Rapid Fire") #4. Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance (sheer metallic perfection from a band at the top of their game) #5. Iron Maiden - Killers (Number Of The Beast is a better album overall, but this album set the template for the Maiden sound and is bursting with raw energy and aggression) #6. Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast (just an epic metal album) #7. Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz (as with Iron Maiden's Killers compared to Number Of The Beast, I think that Diary Of A Madman is the better album, but this is the album that introduced Randy Rhoads and Ozzy's new band and sound to the world, and as stated in the Bible, it was good) #8. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (this album redefined and reinvented Sabbath and also introduced Ronnie James Dio to the metal world. I know many hard rock fans were aware of him from his great work with Rainbow, but Sabbath were much more of a straight-ahead metal band which allowed him to really wail and demonstrate the full power and glory of his magnificent metal voice) #9. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman (sheer metal perfection, part two) #10. Metallica - Kill 'Em All (yes, I know this is considered speed/thrash metal, but it's an essential, influential, and game-changing album, so I would strongly recommend it to anyone who I'm trying to introduce to metal)

Great list! Considering the influence of the albums, you got it absolutely right. As far as my own favorites go, I would choose certain other albums (just as you mentioned as well). Probably something like Master of Reality, Unleashed, Beast, Diary of a Madman, Mob Rules (or maybe Last in Line) and then Mercyful Fate’s Melissa, Scorpions’ Virgin Killer, Accept’s Breaker, Loudness’ Devil Soldier and Motörhead’s Orgasmatron. Also, not heavy metal, but I would like to add something from Rush, Megadeth and Slayer to the list, as I love those bands so much.

@@Rextum Thanks. And Scott had set the format of this list as "Top Ten Heavy Metal Albums That Define Heavy Metal" for the purpose of introducing someone not familiar with the genre to, but I would put most of these in my personal Top 10 as well. But I would probably have Master Of Puppets at #1 and Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in there somewhere. It's pretty hard to pick just ten since there are multiple albums that Iove from each of these artists.

The Spectre Within is also my favourite Fates Warning album. Love your picks. 1. King Diamond - Abigail (my top 3 KD album that got me into them, best solos on earth) 2. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast (not my favourite, top 3 but it got me into Maiden) 3. Judas Priest - Killing Machine (In my opinion it's the first truly metal album, Hell Bent for Leather, first real metal track) 4. Fates Warning - The Spectre Within (easily as good as the best Maiden) 5. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman (not my favourite Ozzy album, easily top 3 but the sound, man, it was 1981 and it sounds huge) 6. Manowar - Hail to England (My favourite Manowar album and the one that got me into them) 7. Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys part 1 (the album that got me into metal in general) 8. Samson - Shock Tactics (probably the best Bruce Dickinson vocal performance) 9. Queensryche - Queensryche EP (easily the best EP in metal) 10. WASP - WASP (from LA but didn't want to be like Motley Crue or Ratt, heavy metal with balls... and chain). Stay heavy stay hard

@@nolifetilmetal1 It seems like melodic American metal bands weren't well promoted in the US, so bands like Omen/Savatage etc never got to the level of similar Euro bands (worth noting that Queensryche were signed to a big European label, EMI, a wise choice that likely gave them a big advantage). In the US, the focus seemed to be on either hair metal or thrash metal; other bands were stuck in this awkward grey area that US record labels didn't know what to make of. And most bands like Helstar were relegated to the indies, anyways, even as thrash bands got signed by major labels in droves at the tail end of the 80's.

Amazing video, thank you so much!! Well Dio defined heavy metal for sure!! I was quite surprised though that you did not mention any 78 or 79 records that really pushed all those 80's bands to play it loud, hard and heavy!! Motorhead, Scorpions, Triumph, Riot, Thin Lizzy, J.P.-Hell bent for leather/killing machine/stained class....all late 70's megatons heavy metallers on the verge of the new decade!!

I was really trying to keep it traditional 80's metal and would not have included any 70's or 90's releases, but despite telling all the people I polled that I wanted 1980's releases, I still got a pick from 78 and 90. Haha! Regardless, had I expanded beyond that decade, Rainbow Rising, Priest - Stained Class, Sabbath - Master of Reality, Aerosmith - Rocks and Budgie all would have made my list.

Great picks indeed. My top 10 would be: 10. Running Wild - Branded & Exiled (Great metal band and Gods Of Iron kills) 09. Exciter - Heavy Metal Maniac (Vocalist and drummer Dan Beehler cranks up the heaviness on this album. Iron Dogs is great!) 08. Savatage - Power Of The Night ( This album kills from beginning to end.) 07. Tyrant - Legions Of The Dead ( Killer musicianship and a vocalist who can scream your ears off) 06. Saxon - Crusader ( This album was the first one I bought from the band, all because of the killer title track) 05 Crimson Glory - Self- Titled ( Their first album was relentless with all killer no filler. Midnight was phenomenal) 04 Grave Digger - War Games (Let Your Heads Roll has tore up more than one set of speakers of mine) 03 Judas Priest - Painkiller (When someone asks me a good heavy metal song to listen to I tell them Painkiller. That song is pure heavy metal in every form) 02 Accept - Restless & Wild ( Udo has a killer metal scream thats hard to beat) 01 Metal Church - Metal Church ( David Wayne may he rest in peace. This is the album I would take to a deserted island if I could take only one metal album)

Black sabbath - Heaven and Hell Dio - Holy Diver Judas Priest - Screaming for vengeance (I too prefer the 70s album but for someone who wants to know what is heavy metal this album immediately comes to my mind to explain him) Iron Maiden - Number of the beast (but it is really hard for me to pick one from Killers to Power slave they are all great) Mercyful Fate - Melissa (I was surprised this one did not came in your list, as the riffs are insane and there are no weak songs on it. It's only the vocals that may sound strange) Accept - Balls to the wall (but again it's hard to choose with restless and wild) Grave Digger - heavy metal breakdown Helloween - keeper of the sevens key (I & II) Gamma Ray- No World Order (with a beautiful ballad at the end, lake of tears) Diamond Head - Lightning to the nations (simple but catchy riffs, highly influençal album on the early thrash scene) Some other few : Sanctuary - Refuged Denied Control Denied - The fragile art of existence (even if it is a bit proggy this album is a real masterpiece) As I am French I have two French bands I love : Sortilège - Métamorphose (great album, with a great vocalist, good guitar players). There is an English version called Metamorphosis but it does not work, the lyrics were translated word for words losing the rhymes and the vocalist as a strong reluctant French accent when he sings in English and he loses everything. Sad. Malediction - Esclaves du vice (slaves of vice), my favorite heavy metal album from early 2000

Headhunter is an excelent choice for an album to demonstrate what Heavy Metal is! Halford sang backing vocals on Ready To Burn. Jimi Jamison (future Survivor front man) added backing vocals on Screaming In The Night as well. I totally agree with qualifications you set for this list. The term Heavy Metal has been tossed around loosely since it became a clear genre of it's own when the distinction between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal began to be acknowledged. People have their differences of opinion over when that occured but, by 1980 it was widely accepted as it's own entity and all of us fans were boldly pumping our fists in the air for Metal any chance we got. My list of albums that define Metal is (in no particular order): Iron Maiden~Number of the Beast (if I have to pick one, this is the one) , Ozzy Osbourne~Diary of a Madman (Randy Rhoads' playing was so special and he absoluetly pushed Metal in a new direction when he came on the scene!), Judas Priest~Unleashed in the East (Maybe the most Metal album Priest ever made. Everyone's favorite Priest album if you allow for live albums in the selection process.), Riot~Fire Down Under (My go to album for pure American Heavy Metal and one of the most energenic performances caught on tape ), Black Sabbath~Mob Rules (I'd rather go with Master of Reality but, for the sake of adherence to the agreed upon-guidlines, I'll classify that one as "Proto-Metal" ), Dio~Holy Diver (Has there ever been a stronger Metal debut), Manowar~Hail To England (Not False Metal), Yngwie Malmsteen~Marching Out (This album represented another quantum leap forward in Metal. Arguably the beginnings of another sub-genre of Metal but, out of all of his early albums, this one feels more traditional Heavy Metal than the rest. Odyssey was sort of Metal albeit more commercial but, Riot In The Dungeons? How Metal is that?) Fates Warning~The Spectre Within (I am tempted to go with Awaken the Guardian here but, Spectre is more traditional Heavy Metal in opinion), Metal Church~Metal Church (This may well get lumped into Thrash but, when this was released in 1984 it was pure Heavy Metal), Metallica~Ride The Lightning (The most traditional Metal Metallica album IMO but, Master of Puppets would be Heavy Metal in my book as well although, I'm certain it had been labeled as Thrash Metal by then as they had seemingly broken off the Heaviest section of Metal to form their own sub-genre by then. We were certainly aware of the new term by then.) I know, my list goes to eleven. It was the eighties. If you know, you know)

I'm already feeling bad about not including Savatage on my list. Their early albums Sirens, Power of the Night, The Hall of the Mountain King and the Dungeons Are Calling ep (re-released in 1994 with enough bonus material to consider it a full-length album are Metal as anything on my list and are deserving of a place on my list. Any one of my original selctions that are argueably not pure Heavy Metal and need to be classified in a sub-genre of Metal could easily seed their postition with any of these!)

Great video! I enjoyed the concept the execution. It would be neat to see a series of these with picks representing Thrash, Death, Doom, etc. My #1 would be either Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell or Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast (Killers is a great pick too but I feel Paul's vocals have a punky element to them while Bruce is Metal through and through, plus the cover has the devil on it). I would also throw into the conversation: Slayer - Show No Mercy (I know you said no Thrash but to me Slayer didn't start to sound Thrash until later. In thr begining they were more traditionally Heavy Metal) and Motörhead - Overkill (sound wise there is a huge Rock N Roll/Punkish element but I feel like by the time you're making a whole list for someone Lemmy has to be in there somewhere). As a dark horse I might suggest Skid Row - Slave To The Grind. They started Hair Metalish but on that record they just went for it with being Metal. It's also pretty underrated IMO, probably because the radio hits from their first album put them in a certain box for some people. Anyway, great video. Thanks!

If I had to pick a *single* album that represents heavy metal... That's actually hard. Maybe the self-titled Angel Witch record? It's a good blend of the speed, melody and epicness I love in traditional heavy metal with vocals that are accessible enough. Honorable mention to Manilla Road's The Deluge, which is my personally favorite heavy metal record... But totally understand Mark Shelton's vocals aren't everyone's cup of tea. EDIT: Killers is absolutely great, too. I actually love Paul Di'Anno year are my favorite Maiden records. As someone who's also big into punk, the punk energy of the first two records is something I absolutely love.

I know it's a cliche but I would probably go with Powerslave

When I was in the 3rd or 4th grade a friend of mine found a copy of Killers in the snow on the way to school . She gave it to me cause I was the only kid not into Michael Jackson lol . I was hooked immediately .

That's totally weird , I too happened upon said album, along with number of the beast ,,walking to school in the snow when I was 12 ,,it was 1982 ,,and number of the beast was just released ,,the artwork was totally scary as we're song titles,,, I hid them under my mattress for a week ,too scared to play them,,my mom would have shit herself if she had seen them !! Finally put on beast,, and haven't stopped since!!!! 🤘
