It was a hard task for some of these people to come up with only ONE album that represents an entire genre that, for many is such a big part of their lives. For me, Killers was the album I discovered Maiden on back in 1982 or so. As such, it has always represented the best of heavy metal, but Number of the Beast is EASILY as good, if not better due to the addition of Bruce on vocals.

@@nolifetilmetal1 First tape I got from a pal's big brother had Number of the Beast on one side and Saxon's The Eagle has Landed on the B side. If I must make a 'kill your darlings' review of the Top 10 list I made for that video of yours and pick only one album -and it was a tough process-, it would boil down to Kiss' "Creatures of the Night". All solid well-executed songs with lots of weight in every beat from I Love it Loud and War Machine to I Still Love You (imho one of the greatest heavy ballads ever made). Sorry to say, but I think that that album and Lick it up actually marked the end of Kiss as a heavy metal act.

I chose Metal Church on the first part of this video as #1. Thank you Jeff McCormack! A true metal album should have a variance in the songs but always retain the heaviness and this album does just that. You have driving drums, heavy guitars and all the songs retain the heavy metal core. And you have a vocalist that could sing as well as take on the heavier songs with an ear piercing snarl. Crimson Glory's first self titled album would have been another great choice. People label them as progressive which is wrong for their first album. It has all the elements and more to be considered for this spot. Listen to Mayday or Valhalla and the melodic high pitched vocals of Midnight and all you will hear is metal. Most people will always pick the more popular bands but there are real diamonds out there that many overlook and I think Metal Church and Crimson Glory both had killer debut albums.

Helloween was in Part 1 of this video. However it’s tough when you can only pick one and you have no idea what anyone else picked. If you had to pick only one album that defines heavy metal what would it be?

A few surprises in there but you can't argue with peoples personal choices, especially if it helped to get them hooked on heavy metal. Almost any of the fist four Maiden, Saxon & Priest wouldn't have looked out of place here.

It is the undisputeable truth that Samsons Head On is THE defining Classic Heavy Metal album. 1) The Cover 2) The Image and the stage performance 3) The Irony and fun 4) The bluesy Rock and Roll feeling 5) The lyrics 6) The songwriting ....

I'm truly shocked that in this video there was still no mention of Don't Break the Oath by Mercyful Fate or even Melissa, I was very happy to see Metal Church's debut record make an appearance at least but man oh man, bands like Kiss and Ratt making appearances over Fate (or even the early King Diamond records after MF dismantled) is mystifying, but oh well, great videos otherwise.

Cool list. The labeling of heavy metal isn’t what is really important IMO. The spirit of the question is to mention an album that represents the genre. It is cool that people that are very involved in the industry have very diverse opinions. The key aspect of it to me is that all of the albums are great examples of music that can be appreciated by old listeners or people new to the genre

A great wealth of different kind of metal albums. I'm not disputing any of these. To me when thinking in terms of defining heavy metal, one thing that has to be present is a bit of dirt. In another words, the production can't be too refined. As an example i would say The Number Of The Beast is much more representative of heavy metal than Piece Of Mind. Extra points for having included Keel, they hardly ever get mentioned in vc. Pasi

Wow! Warrior, Metal Church, early Ratt, UFO, Jag Panzer, Grim Reaper, Kiss. love them all... for my money, i'd say Motorhead's Iron Fist is their darkest and heaviest (at least for the 80s); Accept's Balls to the Wall; lots of Thin Lizzy but from an 80s metal perspective, 'Thunder and Lightning' (a bit late in the game, yes.. but hey, someone mentioned 'Painkiller'!); Armored Saint's 'Delirious Nomad'; Mercyful Fate's Don't Break the Oath (some call them proto thrash: they're NOT); 'Lovedrive' by the Scorpions; Rainbow's 'Straight Between the Eyes', maybe? it's softer and poppy in spots, but it can be speedy or moody... c'mon, nobody ever mentions these two genre-defining gems (at least in my metal life): Blackfoot's 'Tomcattin'' (Van Halen-ish at times, always hard rocking) and The Plasmatics' 'Coup d'Etat' (total '82-'83 metal, sort of similar to Kiss, Krokus, Accept, Scorps, Priest, Motorhead, Ozzy, even a bit Sabbath-y); Angel Witch's 1st; Diamond Head's 1st; Triumph's 'Never Surrender' is quite epic (though not ultra heavy, that's true, but in the UFO vein, maybe?); Savage's Loose n' Lethal; Pentagram's 'Relentless' (not as doomy as one might think, more along the lines of some nwobhm, Witchfinder General or Witchfynde, that kind of stuff. but yes, nobody heard it in the 80s, we had to wait for a re-issue to appear); Heavy Load's 'Metal Connquest'; Riot's 'Fire Down Under' has the speed, the attitude, the songs! BÖC's 'Cultusaurus Erectus'. i love The Rods early output, Exciter's Heava Metal Maniac, Battleaxe's 'Power From the Universe'... BUT the one that crowns it all, the one that defines this genre for me, for some reason, is TT Quick's 1984 (or is it 85?) e.p. The riffs, Tornillo's voice, the hooks, the variety of speeds, the production, i don't know, it's just too damn awesome, though only 20 minutes long, buy that's why it hits the bullseye every time. got it when it came out, i was only 13, still play it quite often, it just energizes me no end... thanks for reading!

For me I would only have picked albums from the late seventies up until 1985. After that real heavy metal was on life support to some extent, most albums had glam or thrash influences after that. Judas Priest, Manowar, Black Sabbath, Dio, all that classic stuff was genre defining for sure. I would love to throw in some Riot too.
@nolifetilmetal14 жыл бұрын
Metal was never on life support. It just went back to the underground. I have done full shows on 1985-1990 that were crammed with killer metal albums though I do agree that thrash and glam became a the dueling kings of the scene. For me I love both.

@@nolifetilmetal1 Metal has always been there. You just had to be a metalhead to know it. The only thing that died from the 70's was disco. The 80's had so many variations with metal at it's core that people had to invent sub-genres. That's when people's ideals of what defines a band as heavy metal really changed because there were so many bands playing different types of metal to choose from. Not a bad thing at all, you just had different types of metal to listen to and not all of it was based on the classic beginnings or trend followers.
