In the UK we used the term Heavy Rock in the late 70s early 80s, it was magazines like Sounds and Kerrang that popularised the term Heavy Metal in the UK. We never had any is it hard rock is it metal arguments.

Lester Bangs of CREEM magazine used it first because of STEPPENWOLF using the line " Heavy Metal thunder. Earlier this music was called Acid Rock.

Great show, guys! Golden Earring's Live LP from '77 displays their metal overtures. I'm not sure if you guys mentioned G.F.R., but Grand Funk was definitely proto-metal.

For me the first Metal album was Judas Priest "Sad Wings Of Destiny" in 1976. Before that it was blues based heavy rock. This is my opinion folks.
