I don't know what school you went to (and not putting it down) but the one I went to (and DDS where I tested) required that we know this as part of our testing (some was on the written and some on the pre trip inspection test). But they also told us that they were teaching us enough to get our liscense and that it was up to the company we hire with to teach us the rest.

Sure, the seasoned driver can and will do this much faster. Combining or skipping a few steps. However, as a product demo goes, this is a great video. Also, I am in trucking school now. This is a better explanation then anything the school has given

I did all these things except chocking the wheels. If I was dropping the trailer on a yard, I didn't chock the wheels, but if dropping in a door at a shipper or receiver, I chocked the wheels if it was required there. You learn to do a lot of double-checking if you've ever had another driver tamper with your equipment while you're sleeping in a truck stop lot. It never happened to me, but I've seen lots of incidents.

That brings up a good point too. The video tells you to make sure your load is secure before attaching to the trailer. But they didn't open the trailer up to see if the load was secured right before he just backed up into it. lol..

Never install the electric and air hoses until AFTER you've done the tug test. Connecting them should be the last thing you do prior to getting in the truck after you've done everything else.
@julier108010 жыл бұрын
Nope, not true. You don't know the condition of the trailer brakes. Unless you're gonna waste time with chocks, hooking up the air lines is safety.
@TeriWilde10 жыл бұрын
julie r the "tug test" is purely to see if the king pin is actually secure in the fifth wheel before you do anything else, they have been known to 'click' in place but not lock... plus 95% of High Tech European Trailers have air operated parking brakes, the new trailers engage the park brake automatically when the lines are disconnected thus removing the need to chock the wheels like it's still 1963...
@RealMiniatures7 жыл бұрын
i drove for over 40 years.the tug is to make sure the trailer is hooked up.you don't connect the pigtails until then, cause if it's not hooked you stand the chance of tearing the pigtails off the tractor.after your done with the tug then get out hook the pigtails.then get under it an look at the 5th wheel locks.

To answer Sidharth Parmar Question The early tractor trucks only had 4 wheels on the ground, not 10 or 14 like now, so the hitch on the truck is the "fifth" wheel because it looks like a wheel.
@m1cks11 жыл бұрын
As for why its called a fifth wheel? Many different Internet explanations, but I believe it's from when vehicles had chain steering (old horse and steam carts) where there was a central "5th" wheel underneath the carriage which operated it

Why is it called the Fifth wheel? I assume it has nothing to do with the name "18 Wheeler" since that refers to the amount of tires on the cab and trailer combined. Also, truck cabs are referred to as tractors? And the legs for trailers are called landing gear? That one seems kinda odd to me since landing gear until now has only been the name that applies to planes, space shuttles, and helicopters. Legs seems like it'd have been a more fitting term since those things kinda seem like, well, legs for the trailer to stand on.
@Hero_of_Legend8 жыл бұрын
Allow me to answer a few of your questions: 1: It's called the "5th wheel", because in the days of old, before ball hitches, and other modern coupling technologies were invented ( noting that we're talking about an era of horse drawn buggies ), the trailer was indeed attached to a horizontally placed wagon wheel, identical to the other 4, making it indeed the 5th wheel on the vehicle. They used a wheel, because it's rotational properties promoted turning ability. In more modern times, the new standardized system simply retains the name. 2: And yes, the "proper" technical term for the actual "truck" is "tractor". Because it provides the traction. Technically, a semi is properly known as a "tractor/trailer". But people typically use "semi" to avoid confusion with the farm vehicle by the same name. 3: "Landing" in this case, refers to being supported solely by the land it stands on, instead of partially upon the tractor. Those "legs" are the "gear", which "lands" the trailer. Confusing, though. I know. Though it's worth noting that motorcycles can also now be equipped with "landing gear", which is a set of "training wheels" of sorts, that retract when the bike is moving more than a certain speed, and extend when it drops below it. It's been quite some time since the term "landing gear" applied solely to an aircraft.

the reason why this stuff isnt done is a trucker can spot anything wrong with a fifth wheel in a second
@goofyexponent11 жыл бұрын
Back up to the trailer, stop before touching the 5th wheel to the trailer. Get out, hook up air lines. Enter truck, pull spike and back under trailer. Should the spring brakes be un operational, the trailer will not roll away when you try and couple. If it is not YOUR trailer, who knows who rode it how hard and left it for dead. The brakes may not even work.

These shows are by the Manufacturer. They are the proper way to Hookup and Uncouple a trailer. Schools may teach you one way, so when you get to your Road test, you will pass. As time carries on, in your trucking career, you will cheat the system at some point in time, and that us when you will get bitten. Get yourself into a Routine when doing both. Never change from that routine, just because you want to get home or to a party. You will miss something and that will end your Night right then and there. Drive Safe Always your Family depends on you doing so.

do you want to be under the trailer when the truck jumps into gear and rolls over your ass? Not bloody likely to happen, but it is still a possible situation. So I will laugh when you go under the wheels of the trailer cause you happened to get into that unlikely situation

No, that is not a "possible situation" in a manual transmission vehicle placed in neutral, with the parking brake applied. Any situation where the vehicle would roll back and run you over, is a situation where the engine running is not a factor. The sheer amount of force required to force the transmission into gear without a clutch pull, would not be possible without direct human involvement. So don't expect to laugh anytime soon.
