My father’s side of the family is related to some of the very first Mormons, and he was the first to leave. His experiences within the church are a few decades out of date now but he has described them as ‘the most down to earth people who believe the most out there $1’*’ and that tracks with my own experiences. The majority of Mormons I have met are good people, trying to do their best in life, who are being taken advantage of.

Sounds like grand junction co. I worked on a temple being built (l.d.s) and whoa..what an exp. I went in as a temp laborer and what a sm list of rules just to pick up their tradh. No swearing on the job site, nothing but water allowed inside the temple, and omg cameras.. poles w maybe 6 cameras a piece hooked up to power plant generators and tjats just the outside, the inside isnt even wired up yet but o whatva creeepy setup. Def not a normal church, more like a corral w a centralised slaughter chamber

I cared for an elderly Methodist woman, her grandson is deep in the Mormon church. When he and his family would visit, the 4 year old would literally PREACH and Chastise her for having a cup of coffee. I cannot tell you how many Mormon bibles we would find all over the house when they left!

Yep, the second anointing. When you mentioned that the wife gives her husband a rare female blessing, it suddenly clicked that my father, and thus parents, had their second anointing. My parents told me the Temple was a more feminist space with women "laying on hands" or whatever. But I could never figure that out until now. They became very casual about eating out on Sundays, and watching R-rated movies in their old age. So the "sinning phase" of old age may not go away as much as you think, especially for pent-up former Mormons.

I was told to wear a dress, I hate dresses, the churches my parents attended let us wear jeans if we wanted. But I found a nice, modest dress so I could go watch my neice be baptized. Got there and so many women in spaghetti straps and short skirts. When I asked about the immodest clothing, I was told that they were members so it was OK but I was a guest and had to show respect. After that I wore slacks to every other event I was invited to.

As an atheist from Estonia I've been loving your videos! Growing up we were taught about different religions as a part of cultural history. Since most people in Estonia are atheists or agnostics we (the school kids) never fully understood the WHY part of many religions. WHY people believe these principles? The best thing to see in your content other than you looking really happy and content where you are now, is the fact that your husband followed you and supported you with leaving the church. In various videos you mention that everything felt like a farce or fake and its really satisfying to see that your marriage was one thing that was actually real. Every member tithes, even the children. They keep records and have regular meetings with their bishops to verify that they are indeed paying 10%. I worked for a company owned by a "fifth-generation" family. I remember the kids that worked there after school frantically reconciling their "books" because their family was having a meeting with the bishop. I asked if all the kids even the young ones had to meet with him and what could the young kids that didn't work have to declare? The older sister said they had to declare monetary gifts, allowances, etc.

My great-grandmother in the 40s was part of a women's group in Salt Lake comprised of fireman's widows that met at Ottinger Hall memory grove. One of the other ladies in the group one day made a comment about how many sheets they had to wash at the temple that day. When my great grandmother asked what do you mean,she just replied your not mormon? My great grandmother said no and the woman just clamed up and walked away. From that day on in our family it was believed that what went on in there was a witnessing of consummation of marriage. That ultimately increased our disappointment in our ancestors following this religion across the Prairie.

They still had the Charles Manson slash your throat Blood Oaths. I should have had the guts to walk out of that ceremony and cancel my mission altogether.

man, it's trippy to realize how much basic info is confusing to outsiders. 😂 just for the sake of answering: the hierarchy is: investigator => member => leader (women lead/teach women and minors, men can lead/teach men and some minors without the presence of women, and then there are other offices in management that mainly men occupy) => bishopric (3 men that preside over the whole congregation) => stake offices/presidencies (women and mostly men that lead several congregations in an area) => area 70 (men that manage several stakes) => church presidencies (of which there are dozens of men and only nine women on the global level) => apostle (yes, 12 men like jesus had) => prophet/president of the church (a man that is believed to be the actual connection to god)

I asked my father and father in law about the second anointing recently. Both were bishops for about 6 years so I figured it could be a good source. My father told me that he had no idea what that even was, and that your calling and election made sure is a completely different thing and I was confusing things and needed to stop looking into “deep doctrine” lol My father in law told me that it wasn’t what I was thinking it was(meaning judgement being decided here on earth) and that it couldn’t be discussed outside the temple regardless. He then proceeded to say that anybody who has talked about it outside of the temple is wrong and that if they really had had it that they wouldn’t dare speak of it. He told me if he ever had his second anointing he wouldn’t even be telling us(my husband was on the phone as well) soooo yeah. Even people on the church who you can go to for answers either have noooo fucking clue or just straight up don’t talk about and shut down the topic

Yes, there are Masonic chapters in Utah, and a Mormon could join (there are many). For a few decades tensions were high between Mormons & Masons because of the obvious "lifting" Joseph Smith had made from the Masonic ceremonies and then his crafting into the LDS endowment. I think that tension is pretty much relaxed at this point.

I’m glad to find your channel. My family is not Mormon but I was raised in Utah. First in Salt Lake and then St. George. My parents divorced and moms job took us to St. George. St. George was so Mormon I felt very uncomfortable and peer pressured badly. I finished high school in Salt Lake with my dad. I have a friend that moved to St. George recently and she’s been having a very hard time with the culture. She had no idea before she moved. Got put down at the swimming pool for her bathing suit etc. People don’t know how weird and controlling it can be unless you’ve lived it. Thanks for educating people more about it!

I embarrassed myself in front of the only Mormons I'd ever met. Like another commenter, I am Irish, born and raised, and never met a mormon...until I moved to South Korea and put my foot in my mouth big time lol. I was talking to a nice young woman in the immigration office about nothing in particular. In walk two young men in white shirts and ties, I see them, and immediately swing around to the young woman and exclaim "are those MORMONS???" And she says "yes!" Stands up, and says "Hello elders!" I then try to pivot and act interested, rather than acting like I'd seen an alien lol I asked about mormon beliefs and why they can't have coffee. Her answer was that they couldn't have anything that would alter how their brain works. I don't think Alyssa has ever said that explanation before! I then said I've never seen a mormon in Ireland, added that I was atheist, and then was called to the desk for my appointment lol. Very awkward for me 😂.

I've since fallen down a total rabbit hole with Alyssa and learned so much about the Mormon church now, and I've never seen anyone else claim that to be the reason either! Just that one woman! I was raised catholic in Poland. Polish church is integrated with a lot of polish tradition and when Poland wasn’t on the maps for more than 100 years, church was a place where polish language and culture was preserved. Now I’m agnostic or atheist but when I was still practicing the ceremonies in church was similar ladder to Mormon ones. Baptism was first step, after that baby is in church registry. You have two sets of parents your own and God parents that usually are obligated to help financially or in other ways. Then is first commune, you are around 10yo and you have to learn to prey and how to behave as a Christian, a lot of test visits to te church, first time confessing your sins to the priest and white dresses for everyone, you the first time consume “Jesus body” bread. After that you are conscious member of the church, and probably have new bike or some electronic equipment. The last stage when you are child, when you are around 15yo, is confirmation, you are preparing to get the Holy Spirit to your heart, you have to choose saints name to guard you and after that you can be God parent. Then is marriage or being priest or nun. You are in a new family with your partner or with a God himself to serve him. The last one is last rites, before the person die the priest forgives sins and then is smearing special oil on a forehead and arms of the person and then gives a body of Jesus, the last Eucharist. The leader thing is in polish church. Every ritual is making you closer to God to the last one when you are going to be with God soon. It can’t be denied that church in Poland did a lot of things great in the time when Poland didn’t exist and while PRL and communism, but it isn’t perfect. Thanks for sharing! My mom is of Polish descent and I was raised Catholic. We went to a Polish parish church so we kids could learn a little about our heritage. Here in the United States, Catholics have the same sacraments. And the same mix of good and bad from the church. Any large institution will have its share of mistakes! I don’t currently practice Catholicism, but recognize the importance of celebrating together and remembering our heritage.

I'm from Colombia and the Catholic Sacraments are the same. The majority of people from Latin America are Catholic by tradition more than conviction. I was raised Mormon and left the church 30 years ago in my 20's. My husband is Catholic in a gray line between conviction and tradition. We goes to mass, to some especial celebration in easter time and Christmas and thst all. The only time we confessed his sins was before our wedding, because it was mandatory for the ceremony, and it was very different from those horrible interviews with the Bishops. For me it is ideal to have a place where I can pray (in my own way), but be free to go whenever and wherever I want, just for one hour a week where nobody is judging me or gossiping about me and my family. But reading your detailed description of The catholic sacraments makes me think of all the similarities between religions and cults. Of course you will find a lot of Catholic devoted people, but in reality and average you ask a person and will answer I'm Catholic, and if you ask When was the las time you went to church? They will not remembermsybe sometime in theur childhood.

I'm in Wyoming is the US. I was Born, Baptized and Confirmed Lutheran (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, keeping to the works of Luther). I'm more of an Odinist these days, but I went through 2 years of Confirmation, reading Luther's Small catechism. You have tests on the you Biblical knowledge, talks with pastor (most of mine were a little about confirmation and the rest was about High School real football that we Americans play, because he was out defensive coordinator, or taking his oldest daughter who had this huge crush on me and was in confirmation with me, on a date or to a school dance, because my dad was the elder, and president of the voters). There was really, even if I think about it, much "advancement" to positions in the church. There isn't pressure to become a pastor, go to seminary in Saint Louis, Missouri. My dad was only elder because the old guy in our congregation retired and vacated the spot so the congregation, at a voters meeting that my parents skipped, voted to elect my dad to the position, despite him not wanting the job. My dad was also a layperson for pastor and had to do the church service. Because my dad was elder he could give communion without being ordained or having gone to seminary, he was just voted into his position, no special ceremony just a phone call from Pastor and another member of the church, "Hey congratulations Bill you're the elder now. Well gotta go, stop by the parsonage or the office and we can chat about your ideas now that you're my boss." That was it. My dad as elder had the power to fire the pastor. Not that my dad wanted to. But when they made my dad elder, the old hens could now go and complain to my mom and pastor's wife at Mary-Martha League meetings about people and things in the church. Then the old hen club voted my mom and pastor's wife to officer positions in Mary-Martha League. Neither was happy that they did this. But that's about it. That's all we had. Confirmation was given to us as a choice. We became full members who now had voting rights in the church and could take communion. No confessions are required in the Lutheran Church, but you can if you want, except it's you, pastor and a witness of your or pastor's choosing. Yeah confession for us has pastor and a witness behind closed doors in his office, face to face. We also have the last rights and final communion and that's it before you are placed in the ground. Lutheran funerals aren't really that somber, they are structured but they are celebrations of the person's life with hymns. That's it.

I am so grateful for information like this, for people like you for sharing this! I was grown up in the mormon church, my entire childhood i never felt 100%, i continued believing because of how convincing they are, and of course because of how shamed you are if you ever believe otherwise. But when i became older and not forced anymore to go to church i finally quit going, and then events in my life that happened afterwards (not related to this religion) i was finally able to truly know that i was absolutely no longer a part of this religion. My entire family except for a neice and 2 nephews are still raging believers. It breaks my heart that this religion that satan created to mock God, has so many people under its grips. But that is another reason why i am so thankful people like you all keep putting the truth out there! God never mentioned anything about religion, only FAITH! Believing that Jesus died and shed His blood for our sins, so that by GRACE we are saved, not by works. I have been watching so many of the podcasts by you and Shelise and I am so happy that both of you are happy and thriving. There was a 3-4 part documentary about the Mormons, probably sometime in early 2004-05. It was basically about how a Mormon could become excommunicated for such things like living the life of a gay person or teaching anything other than Mormon beliefs. There was a very big focus on a husband and wife, both were college professors. I think the wife was at BYU teaching Women's studies and the husband was nearby in maybe Utah State or UofU. He was excommunicated first (can't remember why) and then she had uncovered some research that said there had previously been women leaders in the church. When she shared it with her students, she was silenced and told not to speak of it again. When she persisted, she had to go before a court of men and when she tried to defend her evidence of the source of her research, she was told they would not look at it and was warned again not to further the heresy of women leaders in the early church. She felt committed to teach the truth that she had discovered and continued and was also excommunicated. It told how awful it was for all three of them to be abandoned by all other Mormons in their community. The documentary raised so much ire it just disappeared. I have tried looking everywhere for it but have never found it. It was called something catchy, like "Here Come the Mormons," or something with the word Mormon in it. I worked in a school district in Az, at that time, that was heavily populated by Mormons and when I asked fellow coworkers about some of the things revealed, they all said they had not watched any of the episodes bc they knew it would be spreading lies to sensationalize sacred Mormon teachings. I was wondering if you have ever heard of it or if you could find it. I was really surprised (at that time) how revealing it was.

I grew up Christian - when you were talking about what motivates people to be active, in many of the churches I attended, it was always difficult to get enough volunteers to run programs. There was no "levels" or "extra righteousness" available - so people were not motived. They have to pay people for a lot of the positions, and programs come and go a lot because they are hard to run with low levels of volunteering. You don't really need to prove you are good as a Christian so a lot of people do the bare minimum.

I once had a Mormon lady who worked for me all up in her froth because they had to catch up their tithing because they were behind. Their son wanted to get married, and they would absolutely not allow this until that tithing was paid up in full. This wasn't even a temple wedding. It was their local church. I always wondered, but didn't ask, If her son had gotten someone pregnant, and so this being why they were in such big trouble to get this wedding scheduled. You guys haven't even gotten to the part yet where a woman can't get into Heaven unless her husband calls her by her secret temple name, which only he knows now, but they both will know in the afterlife. He will only do this if she has been an obedient wife. Jesus, on the other hand, made it abundantly clear that no one's salvation rests upon another human, but only in belief of Jesus Himself, as He had paid the ultimate price for each of our salvations. That any intelligent woman would give up her autonomy to any man to call her into Heaven, based on his assessment of her obedience to him, in this period of time, is beyond cultic.

Not a Mormon, but I am the family genealogist and have been to the Family History Library in Salt Lake. (For those who don't know, it's across the street from Temple Square.) Once when I was in the library, I saw an older man dressed in a gray suit. But sticking out of his jacket pocket for all to see was a pair of white Dearfoam slippers. I suppose he had been in the temple, and then dropped by for a little genealogy work.
