There was one part that Matt didn't get into regarding Beyond Games. After it shut down in 2002, the company's founder chose to form a new one in its wake: Smart Bomb Interactive, best known for licensed titles like Snoopy vs the Red Baron, Pac-Man World Rally and my favorite piece of trivia, the Wii version of the Bee Movie Game. A far cry from the post-apocalyptic roots of the former studio huh? Unfortunately it really wouldn't last that long, as they rebranded themselves into a purely edutainment company called Wildworks in 2010, working on an educational kids MMO called Animal Jam. And then got into NFTs in 2021, before getting bought out by this Indian conglomerate the following year.

Basically a glorified RFID reader. Buy a game, then buy trading cards that can be scanned to unlock characters. It was essentially a physical loot box made by Mattel.@@CarlosLins1
@anenigma837811 ай бұрын
For the uninitiated, the Hyperscan is a "game console" made by Mattel in 2006. Out of it's library of 5 games, it had 2 fighters: An X-Men one and some weird wrestling one. However the whole gimmick of the Hyperscan was that you had to buy physical card packs in order to actually play the game, which was basically what loot boxes are in modern games. With the fighting games, the only way to play the game is to have a card of the character you want to play as. X-Men is particularly egregious with this as it has "Ultimate" characters which are just strictly better versions of existing characters making it blatantly pay to win. There's not many reviews of the Hyperscan due to the fact that you need the cards just to play the games and with it being a failure, the cards are hard to come by. The console itself is also poorly made and prone to failure so finding a working one is even more rare. So until this gets emulated somehow, I don't know if it will appear on this show. The most in depth review of the Hyperscan is from a youtuber named Kohdok if you want to check it out. TL;DR: It's a really bad game console with a really bad fighting game that's almost impossible to fully review at this current time.

Man, you weren't kidding about that lore, Matt! That manual has, like 90s Blizzard-level lore in it. Truly insane for what's basically a MK1 clone released 3 years after MK1. I kind of want to give Beyond Games credit for not overreaching here; unlike, say, Naughty Dog with Way of the Warrior or the devs of Expect No Mercy, they at least seemed to understand that they knew nothing about making fighting games when they were dragooned by Atari into making this thing, so it looks like they just tried to crib MK to the best of their ability. They failed, and they wound up creating something less interesting than WotW, but they at least understood their limitations and didn't try to overreach. That's commendable in a way.

A metal themed fighting game with Mortal Kombat-like elements doesn’t sound too bad on a piece of paper, if it only wasn’t executed horribly. It should also be noted that when this was first shown at the E3 in early 95, it was originally called “Ultra Vortex”, but they had to change it to “Ultra Vortek”, probably because there’s another game on the SNES called Vortex, and this has nothing to do with that game.

The game's narrative resonates deeply, as it foretells a world where survival is the ultimate test. Yeah, it's bad but the behind-the-scenes of this game is very interesting, since mostly of the actors were friends of the developers back then, and Volcana is played by a former volleyball player, I think. It's definitely a low budget project, and it shows. And I kinda like from the music even though it's really grainy and low quality, like it was recorded from a MP3 player from 2008. I just wish that MK1 had fighters from those MK clones and put some of them on either a DLC or make it available in the game through its Invasion mode. I'd like to see Volcana vs Scorpion someday.

I have been watching your channel for quite some time and I also play redline. It's actually a really great game but you have to modify the controls because it's trying to get you to play play the game as if you had an Old Fashioned joystick from that year or a computer controller that is a style of control that is no longer made. Funnily enough, the company that released it was accolade, the people behind the Bubsy . This game has a great story and great gameplay and it's a great mix between first person shooter and vehicular combat. I wouldn't say it plays exactly like Carmageddon 2 but it's close to it. What's great about the story is that there is no clear set of morality with any character that you interact with or even the character that you play as. This almost feels as if this could have been a tabletop War game. I recommend this game to anyone who wants a mix of genres and who was a fan of a vehicular combat. There is still an active Community behind it and even the cut multiplayer servers haven't found although that requires modifying the game

Along with Battle of the Eras on DOS. The original Street Fighter also deserves a spot on The Worst Fighting Game as well. Sometimes it's mind blowing I went a notable portion of my life never played it. Until last year through Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium.

It's the game that had to exist so that SF 2 could exist so that the whole fighting genre as we know it could exist. And while it doesn't measure up to it's legendary sequels it was a big leap forward compared to Karate Champ and Yie Ar Kung Fu. So, I think those things keep it from qualifying.

I had a producer on a project that worked on Battle Wheels. I wonder if he had any hand in this mess too. EDIT: hahah I just looked him up on MobyGames and he has UltraVortek right in the bio. I don't think he ever mentioned that, wish he was still at the company for me to pick his brain about it.

I had Redline when I was a kid. I remember loving it but I don't know how well it still holds up.

Shadow war of succession.... the best example of button mashing, spamming attacks, and sounds that makes a trapped feral cat sound like the sultry voice of apollo.

And it didn't even have fatalities, at least ultra vortek got that memo.

I remember playing Redline when it released on an SLI Voodoo system. It was fantastic. Still holds up and I don't understand why the concept of vehicular fps isn't more popular.
