What a marvelous song! A film song is a collaborative effort by the lyricist, music director and singer. Generally it is difficult to say as to who among them deserves the highest praise for the success of the song, but in this case, I have no reservation in saying that it was primarily Sahir's poetry that made this song a classic. Of course SD Burman and Mohd. Rafi played their part superbly. I am shocked to find Sahir's name missing from the credits, that too in a post by Ultra. People, please don't ignore the lyricist.

I dont think that was the case... though this story has been doing rounds for years......The words were changed from difficult Urdu (from the original ghazal) to suit the filmi version. The original version says " sanakhan e taqdees e mashriq kahan hain" I think it means those who take pride in the piousness of the East, where are they"

TRAGIC GENIUS GREAT GURU DUTT "Pyaasa" was first time published as a story in the Illustrated Weekly Of India By Guru Dutt under the title of "Thirsty man". My dad had told me about this. I could never find that original story not even in U.S.A. Guru Dutt was a man considered ahead of his time. He achieved everything in his short life time.
