i have this exact combo on my boat all the time. Don't even take it off the boat. U can do anything from bluegill and crappie to bass and walleye, and even some small catfish that will bite my crappie lures from time to time. The balance is perfect between that rod and that reel. @@Javaslinger7730 I used mine several times this fall and it seems great, but I haven't hooked into any good fish with it yet to get a feel for how it handles them. Now it's hardwater season so I'll have to wait for spring unless I try for bigger fish through the ice. I love the way it looks and feels. I'm having a hard time matching it up to rod, though. The 2500 is so light for a bait runner that it doesn't balance well with my 7' rods, which is what I usually use the bait runners on. I might have to get a higher end rod that is both light and strong to match it with for next year...maybe a St. Croix Mojo Cat or something along those lines. Very detailed and helpful video. Just a quick question, what is the difference between the legalis and the theory? Is the theory worth the extra $200? If so, why? I have only fished using $70 equipment and am trying to decide if going up a bit is worth it. I know it can’t help me catch more fish, but what makes it worth it? Thanks so much. Currently using the daiwa legalis lt and the presso.
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
1. on the difference between Legalis and Theory - i believe absolutely every part is different. The gears are machine cut aluminum vs cast zinc alloy (much better) , the frame is carbon vs plastic (much more rigid, less flex), Drag is somehow much better even though it looks similar, it has more bearings and higher quality bearings, it has seals everywhere, including magnetic oil seal on the main shaft, the roller bearing is better, even the god dam handle is better and lighter. So yeah, there are some differences. 2. Is it worth it . It is impossible to answer this question for other people since Value is 100% subjective. For me it is worth it, given my income, my other fishing tackle, my type of fishing, my personal preferences in life and many other things. For it may not be worth it as your entire life is different than mine. I don't think anyone needs a more than a Legalis for ultralight fishing. You will not catch more fish with a Theory. It is spending money for pleasure. It looks awesome, sounds awesome, feels awesome, but doesn't catch more fish

I am a salt water fisherman from Long Island, Montauk and Florida, living in Quebec and am getting into ultralight fishing as we can't go to the US now. I bought a Stradic FL 1000 and Nasci 1000 for my son or guest. They both feel great, Stradic a bit more powerful. I want something that works for salt water if we ever get back to the states.Is the Stradic overkill for an ultralight????
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
Stradic FL and Nasci are the two best saltwater reels on the market because they are sealed and have heavy strong frame. People usually buy them in the 3000-4000 sizes for Inshore fishing. Haven't heard anyone buy them in 1000 size for Ultralight, because u can buy the lighter versions and people prefer light for ultralight. That said, they are still great reels for UL fishing, when in 1000 size. If you have an UL rod under 200$, chances are these reels will balance just fine. On high end Japanese rods they will feel a little heavy. Is it 'overkill' of what? Fighting the fish? All reels are overkill for that, even the cheapest walmart reel is overkill. I buy nice reels for the pleasure of using them. Overkill would be me having way too much pleasure. That hasn't happened to me. If FL is overkill, what am I supposed to say about my Vanquish, Luvias, Presso LTD.. :) ?? Those must be superoverhyperkill! So enjoy your reels and don't feel guilty about it.

It's really only been in the last year that I've started fishing for smaller species. It's mainly catfish & carp for me, I'm a hobby dough bait maker so it kinda goes with that well. I wanted to ask if you run the factory felt drag washers in your Legalis reels? If so, you might want to think about trying the carbontex washers. They're 8$ and difference is night & day in terms of drag smoothnes and so much more fun with any smaller species. Anyway, great video sir....

You really need to try the Kuying Teton rods!! They are quality rods made in china which can be purchased through aliexpress and have a huge following, especially internationally. I wanted a budget BFS (Ultralight baitcasting setup) and was recommended this rod. They are well respected in the BFS community and are made out of all FUJI components. They also have the ribbed finish like the Daiwa Presso and other JDM rods. My particular model is the TTC662L which is a 2-piece 6'6" light powered casting rod, but they also have a spinning version. This is the rod that I would recommend as I have actual experience with it, albeit only in the casting setup and not spinning. The spinning rod only weighs 81 grams, but unfortunately I believe they are currently out of stock. They also have a 6'4" 2-piece spinning rod in Ultralight power and it only weighs 61 grams! Sadly, I don't have experience with it and am not sure of the characteristics of it. I can tell you that the rod I have is not a noodle at all and I love it

When it comes to vanquish, excense, stradic, stradic fl, theory, and legalis which specific models do you like the most? I'm ordering all reels from Japan if available. I know anything with an "h" or "hg" in model number is for high gear and it's not recommended. Also "s" or "m" for shimano is for small and medium spool, I like the idea of a larger spool so I'm still researching on spool size.
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
I buy the ones with no letters. Those are the low gear ratio models. I buy low gear ratio models of all reels - spinning and baitcasting, finess and heavy duty bottom fishing - always low gear ratio. Shimano doesn't have an ABS spool like daiwa. Even daiwa doesn't make reels with the ABS spool any more. Shimano makes what they call long stroke but that's no nearly as good. Shallow spool is good for ultralight fishing only. No need to put filler line on bottom.. It also has more space for drag washers but they use the same drag washers anyway. Overall shallow spool is not something i care much about. If they have it, i will get it, but if they don't, i don't care. It's not like low gear ratio. If the reel ONLY comes with high gear ratio, i wont even buy the reel
@mikegranese54804 жыл бұрын

Great video, I like your channel. I just have a comment about your recommendation not to use high ratio reel, like 6:2:1 ratio. High ratio is good if you are spinning, because sometimes you might need that extra fast movement of the lure in the water if you want the fish to react and a higher ratio reel serves that purpose. So, the high ratio is to be considered for specific fish and specific situations and not to be completely trashed. That's my opinion. I wanted to thank you for your very informative and thoughtful reviews.
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
There is no freshwater fishing where u need more than 5 gear ratio. Only in saltwater there is some fishing where u need to burn it real fast, but even there you do just fine with 5. I never said that it's wrong though, because it is a personal preference. If you want more resistance and faster retrieve speed then high gear ratio is for you. I pay a lot of money to get the reels with the smallest resistance in the world, and it would be just stupid for me to just give it up by using high gear ratio.Vanquish has lower resistance than Vanford if both reels have same gear ratio. But a high gear ratio Vanquish will have SIGNIFICANTLY (20% more) higher resistance than the cheaper Vanford, if the Vanford has low gear ratio. Then its kind of stupid to spend extra 200$ on Vanquish, right?

Any love for the BG 1500 for ultralight application. Been running it with 4lb test in both salt and freshwater and has performed well and held up well. Yes, heavier than the LT but i feel it can take punishment of getting wet and being knocked around in kayak and when shore fishing better
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
no love for BG for ultralight fishing. Yes, it can take punisment - that's the purpose of this reel. If u need a reel to punish during your trips then its a right because Legalis LT definitely cannot take punishment. However punishment is not a dimension that I ever consider during Ultrlight fishing. I need finesse and sensitivity, and low inertia so u can work a micro jig better. In that respect Legalis LT is much better and it is also cheaper, so i cannot recommend BG for ultralight fishing,

@ifishcatfish5 жыл бұрын
Shimano is definitely the better reel. Both are equally super smooth but shimano has less resistance... lighter rotation. However both reels are amazing and differences are small and I usually make my mind depending on what rod I will be pairing it with. Daiwa has factories for their low end reels in China and Malaysia, yes, but those are still Daiwa reels, designed and manufactured by Daiwa, only in another country. Still different than RYOBI and DAM, who don't design nothing, and have no engineers. Daiwa has their own R&D team and have their own proprietary technologies. RYOBI and DAM have none of that. And, of course, the high-end reels from Daiwa are still made in the Japanese factories. Bottom line is every reel you buy from Daiwa is unique, gears inside, the frame, the bearings are daiwa's own materials, and not shared with anyone. Daiwa, Shimano, and Okuma are the only brands who make their own reels, as far as i know. The rest is buying chinese and korean product and putting heir own label.

The fenwick HMX is an amazing rod and amazing value. Get the 7’ ML. However it will be a bit much for trout. The best rod for trout i know is the 6’6 daiwa presso, but that will be too soft for bass. As for reel, daiwa legalis LT 2500 can work for both.

Thank you for the reply, my upgrades in the 80's were Shimanos, X2000 and custom X2500 on Shakespeare Intrepid 6'6" mediums. Recently I bought a 7' medium Elite Ugly Stick combo. My typical bass catches are 3/4 - 1.5 pounds, a few 2 - 4 pounds, and one 5+ pounder. Typically fishing open bank areas of ponds. That's being said, I was thinking maybe one of the rods good for jigging would be good for weightless worms, just uncertain whether it would have enough stiffness for 3/0 or 4/0 worm hook hooksets. Also not sure if stiff enough for that was too stiff for playing trout. Happy Thanksgiving.

I have considered the Microlite, Fenwick Eagles, Hmx's, Hmg' s and others. Just not sure what a sensitive today is and the difference it makes. I will say my rods my see travel abuse. Is there anything to salvage or should I start anew. Thank you.
@ifishcatfish5 жыл бұрын
Get the HMX 7' ML for bass. Maybe M if u want stiffer, not not more than that. then get the shakespeare micro light 7' L for trout. The daiwa presso is a very fragile rod, will not take much transportation abuse.

What's your take on using braid for float fishing if you need to get the longest cast possible? Or would you stick to mono or fluro? Specifically I'm targeting crappie with small jigs or hooks with a minnow. Your a huge help!
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
this is THE ONLY application I have left for braid. You just mentioned it. I hate braid for everything else. I hate it. I hate fishing with it. I don't want to know how good it is. But for float fishing it is the best just because of buoyancy. I don't care for casting distance. Even when i fish from the bank the crappie is close to bank. I just never had to cast far. However i like the buoyancy of braid because the line sits on the surface. If u use anything else, even mono, the line starts to sink a little after a few seconds. It varies a lot line by line, mono is usually ok as well, but braid is best. When u set the hook it makes a big difference if the line was on the surface or it was sunk. I like to jig my float too. U can't do that with sinking line. And with mono is not optimal. Braid is best for jigging a jig under a float for crappies. In my opinion.
@mikegranese54804 жыл бұрын
@@ifishcatfish cool! I have to cast far while wading in the colder months so if I need to use braid to do so, I will. And I've actually heard alot of people saying braid sinks and mono floats. Actually researching some better floating braid as we speak.

Thats a good question. As far a balance is concerned, your rig will definitely feel better with the 2500 size. Will feel more balanced and will cast farther with the bigger spool. I only buy expensive tackle so I know what it is and don't need to rely on people's words. I myself don't need expensive tackle to be perfectly happy. Go check Richard Gene The Fishing Machine. He has big youtube channel. He is fishing with my $300 JDM rod now. I gave it to him 100% free gift. I tried it and don't need it any more.

they are good, reliable reels. The only area where they lack is the gears. Shimano and Daiwa cut gears with much higher precision even in cheap reels and just feel smoother and more expensive in the hand

Good video. As long as I can have a reel under 185 grams or so I’m OK with it. I have tuned all my Luvias and am more than happy with them. The Presso Limited is an outstanding reel and if I could get another at the sale price I would do so but I’m not sure at the full price it is worth that over the Luvias. I have the 2013 Certate which is tuned also but it is not as good as the 2015 Luvias reels. The Shimano Twin Power is a very good reel at the price point and I could see myself maybe getting another one. I am going to get an Exist and a Vanquish in the not too distant future. The reason I want them is as you said in one of your rod videos. How do we know if we don’t try that lightest rod.....or reel......whatever the case is. The one thing I do know in buying both of those reels I will not be disappointed. The Luvias is over due for a refresh and it should not be long before a new one comes out. Like you stated....one can’t purchase all the rods and reels out there......but at my age I’m going to go out swinging.......LOL. Keep up the good work.
@ifishcatfish5 жыл бұрын
Careful, Randy, if u buy one vanquish u will buy more. I myself am looking for some kind of deals in that reel to buy more. Luvias is a great reel but compared to vanquish it feels like a bass reel. I tried the new exist several times already. Amazing reel no doubt. Feels like a piece of swiss jewelry. But it has more resistance than the vanquish. Nothing is as finesse as the vanquish.

Daiwa Laguna LT is an excellent ultralight spinning reel for under $60 USD.
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
why do u say that? It is heavy and has no bearings. Legalis has 5 advantages over the Laguna LT.
@thedetective81503 жыл бұрын
@@ifishcatfish Daiwa Laguna LT 2000 model weight is 7.9 oz and has 4 bearings for $40 USD. The 2021 Daiwa Legalis LT 2000 weight is 6.8 oz and has 6 bearings and sells for $70. I have the 2021 Daiwa Legalis LT 2000 model on back order. I do agree with you that the Daiwa Legalis LT offers more for the money but some people do not want to spend $70 for a spinning reel so Daiwa Laguna might be an option for them.
@ifishcatfish3 жыл бұрын
Laguna LT is smooth and cheap. I recommend it for everything, EXCEPT Ultralight fishing. Legalis LT is already very heavy reel. It is the heaviest Ultralight reel that i own. Adding 30 grams on top of that is no longer ultralight fishing for me. Maybe for bigger fish like white bass.. The weight kills sensitivity and decreases fun. Also, Legalis has the minimum number of bearings for me. To reduce bearings further u have to remove bearings that support the main gear and the pinion. When the reel is brand new the bushings feel the same as bearings, but with time u will get free play there. Also, the thought that my gears are sitting in plastic instead of bearings personally bothers me. I have 4 Legalis reels, and payed $50 for each of them, right out of Amazon. But times have changed. A lot of people were buying the Legalis because of my videos instead of Exceller, which is a Legalis with nicer handle, and I was seeing Legalis sold for HIGHER price than Exceller, just because vendors had lots of excellers and not many Legalis. Prices are not what they used to be. US government printed 4 trillion dollars last year and money supply increased by 30%. Get used to higher prices, because they will go even higher. If you want Legalis, my advice is pay the $70
@thedetective81503 жыл бұрын

@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
I use only TSI 321 for bearings - any bearings. For drag disks i have a couple. For gears i have more - that depends on what kind of reel u have and how much resistance u can tolerate. Heavier grease protects more but i don't like the resistance in smaller reels. I don't have video because there is a million experts there and everyone has their own opinion and its impossible to prove one grease is better than other anyway

Theory is very old too. I wouldn't buy now. I would buy the Luvias 2500 which costs the same. The bigger models feel good. Just don't get the 1000 and 2000 sizes because of the resistance from the grease. Or wait for new shimano stradic. Shimano doesn't have a calendar. I just expect this based on their patterns. Sometimes u see leaks before the release, but the leaks are leaked intentionally in my opinion, and they come 1 month before the actual release..

For casting the longest under a float with small jigs, what's your ideal set up? I'm usually wading for crappie late/early in the year. Looking for the best type of line, reel brand and model with a tall spool (I believe this helps line come off easier for farther casts), and rod brand and model/length.
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
7'6 Daiwa Presso 2 piece paired with Legalis LT 2500D or the new Regal LT 2000. Legalis reels are lighter and the 2500 balances best. Regal LT is heavier and u have to go to the smaller size. Main line would be daiwa jbraid 8 lb, and leader would be some fluorocarbon 4 lb. U can go lighter in the leader if u know u will catch ONLY crappie, but i get bass and channel catfish and carp (check my videos) and i enjoy landing those accidental fish, so I stick to 4 lb leader. When i jig i go down to 2-3 pound line because carp and catfish will rarely chase a moving jig. But if the jig is suspended under a float they will eat it.

Absolutely, I was going to check out your vid on that soon. I often go to braid while crappie fishing because of the same reason, was just about to mention that! I hook big bass or pickerel and with mono I used to use I'd get break offs and that's annoying! I want to land every fish no matter what.

The reels in this video are the very best at their price points. No exceptions. Everything else at the same price point will be inferior. I don't mean to be arrogant but this is my opinion and u can take it with a grain of salt. I have not tried that kastking reel but knowing where it comes from it will have the same problem as all other NON Japanese reels - no sophistication in the contact of the gears.
