Gento, with Bazanga's defeat under his belt, is appointed by GGF Command's Chief of Staff Retsu as the captain of the newly established SKaRD (Special Kaiju Reaction Detachment). Gento goes to meet the members of his team.
The members he meet, Emi, Teruaki, Anri, are all one of a kind...
That's when news about the emergence of Gedos comes in. They don't have all the members assembled, nor do they have all their equipment yet, but SKaRD's first mission is beginning!

One more thing i like about Blazar is that the interactions between characters feels somewhat natural, the comedic bit isn't too forced and actually works and it made me actually chuckle a bit unlike some *other* seasons.

I agree. Plus the team dynamic of SKaRD is less hierarchical and Gento actually insists that they address each other by their first name. At least I think that’s so they can fight as equals and value each other’s lives. Point is Gento’s a good captain and the team’s quirks are what make SKaRD

I might as well just type my review here. I'm very late to the show today. A big thank you to the original commenter! What got my attention in this episode was the recruitment session where Gento was finding all of the new members one by one. Just like the original commenter mentioned, the interactions between the characters feels natural. It definitely wasn't smooth. There's anxiety shown by the new vice-captain Teruaki Nagura. There's a bit of awkwardness shown when the pen accidentally pierced through the paper and poked the poor guy. There's some anger shown during the search for the last team member. I can get what they are feeling because incidents like these unfortunately happen in real life as well. I guess it was a rollercoaster of emotions, but somehow portrayed quite successfully. Another thing that got my attention was when Blazar turned the spear into a fishing rod. I can definitely say that it all leads back to the same point now. Remember how Ultraman Taro just summoned a bucket of water from his bracelet like thing? Yes this scene reminded me of that. What I'm talking about should already be crystal clear by now. I'm very excited for what happens next. I hope the series can continue on like this. If nobody comments here, then I shall see you all next week!

@@willow9490 I do like that concept too about Gento, and it shows he also is a very chill guy to want to have everyone in his units go by first names or a nickname, to show a sense of camaraderie as well as what you said about their fighting as equals, even with Gento being the Captain.

As a grown adult in the working world, seeing scenes like arguing to pay for a lunch and getting a work document signed only to realize don't have a pen, pen doesn't work, there is no surface to sign against really hits close to home. This feels like a very grown-up aimed Ultraman series and I'm all for it.

The goofiness and seriousness blended really well together, not just the character interactions but also the fight scene. The fishing rod part looked really cool and having Getos grilled gives a unique comedic touch to it, and of course it suits Blazer's hunter aspect really well.

This... this is amazing. These are probably the most impressive use of special effects I've ever seen in a Tokusatsu TV series. The quality of the costumes and the detail of the sets, the seamless integration between costumed actors and real life city scenery, the camerawork on the fights to create the effect of size, the way you can feel the weight of things... just an amazing work of art. Thank you Tsuburaya for keeping practical effects alive in Tokusatsu. Thank you for keeping the soul of Tokusatsu alive.

@@hjcb2976 Tokusatsu has its roots in miniature works & suit-mation kaiju & giant robots since the days of Godzilla movie that started in 1954 & Ultraman shows that started in 1966. After that, the special effect shows branches out into costumed heroes like Riders & Sentai and their human-sized adventure, until Japanese Spiderman popularized Leopardon & the giant robot trope for Sentai which itself was taken from Super-Robot anime shows.

Holy moly, Blazar's opening theme song goes extremely hard! Hiroshi Kitadani really went all out singing it, and I absolutely love it. Not only that, the opening visuals definitely remind me of Ultraman Z's opening. That's how you know Kiyotaka Taguchi really directed this series. Also, I like how all the characters feel so natural of their reactions and interactions together. And I love every of Captain Gento's moments in this episode. Also, I like how Blazar's spear could turn into a fishing rod. If that isn't enough proof of Blazar's primitive nature, then I don't know what will.

TL;DR: this sort of concept isn't that uncommon most of the time it can be seen several times that a monster gets defeated and tries to escape but it gets finished while trying to do so tbf there have been fairly smart kaiju in ultraman franchise (well they were the more tactical and ruthless type of kaiju that could defeat the ultraman in their respective series), but this sort of thing isn't that uncommon even with those kaiju that don't talk, and 2 that I can firmly remember was from the series ultraman tiga (the first one I watched and feel in love with) where in the first episode he fought 2 kaiju waking up for the first time and while he killed one of them the other one being pummeled already successfully escaped and returned in a more powered up version of itself in later episodes, the second one was about a plant that influenced people into hating tiga and while being defeated also it tried to escape and recover but getting killed

The chemistry & banter SKaRD has for one another reminds me a lot of the SSSP. I hope they keep this up for future episodes. I also really like the idea of a Defense Force not wanting humanity to rely on Ultraman so much & that they aren’t so sure whether he’s an ally or not. That’s something that hasn’t been explored very often in the Ultraman Series.

It's not a coincidence, Kiyotaka Taguchi is the main director of Blazar, Z, Orb, and X. I also noticed that the camera moves during fight scenes were similar to that of Z; Blazar dodged that beam at 23:54 much like Z did in his own 2nd episode. tbh I disliked most of Z's writing, but it turns out the handful of episodes I loved were credited to the head writer who tragically passed away shortly before the series, and they did their best writing the rest without him. I anticipate that Blazar will be as great as you hope.

Captain Hiruma Gento is incredibly adorable, haha! The opening and ending songs are absolutely fantastic, I love it! What I find particularly impressive is how the team was assembled based on their individual skills and specialties, rather than randomly selecting civilians with no expertise. It adds a realistic touch to the setup. The creation of the main office (CP) from scratch is also portrayed in a believable manner, as it was formed hastily in response to the sudden emergence of monsters. And it's refreshing to see that they don't immediately accept Ultraman Blazar as a hero, but instead view him as a potential threat still. I also appreciate how they prioritize their own human abilities and don't solely rely on Ultraman. As an international fan, I'm grateful for the multilingual dubbing, too which shows that Tsuburaya Productions truly takes note of viewer feedback. It's absolutely amazing! Even at 23 years old, I thoroughly enjoyed this! This is amazing!!!

I'm 30 years old and I bounced happily when watching Blazar. I'm telling you that Ultraman love is eternal. Tsuburaya really succeeded in making a properly mature theme without gore or sexual. I think this is one of instance when it makes sense to hide one's Ultraman identity. In previous cases, Ultras are always welcomed with open arms. But Blazar is still yet to earn people'a trust. Then again, would Blazar be interested in gaining trust from human? From what we see so far, he doesn't care and just do what he wants

I do like too how Gento and his team are really hilarious too, and showing how SKaRD is learning to be a team. I'm sure it will take some time with GGP to see Ultraman Blazar is friend, not foe. But hey, it's like that given that their Earth has had them dealing with Kaiju for a long time, so it will be fun to see how it will go when things progress. :) Plus I do like how Gento is very relaxed, like how he wants everyone to go by their first name or a nickname on SKaRD, which also shows a good level of trust too.
