ULTRAMAN for Mecha (& Non-Ultraman) Fans | Ultraman Netflix Exploration

ULTRAMAN, the Netflix anime recently finished it's final season and I know that this may be a super blasphemous thing to say but, I really enjoyed the redesigned Ultraman Suits. The story is also very interesting as it's kind of a retell of some of the most iconic moments from Ultraman, Ultraseven, Return of Ultraman, Ultraman Ace, Ultraman Taro and Ultraman Leo. All while also giving us Ultras without the spandex suits and big heads with stoic looks and in place of that, metallic plates that cover the body as armor.
So my friends, I'm Absa, and in this video I'm going to talk about this Ultraman's story, its fantastic exploration of continuity and, of course, the mechanical design of the Ultraman Suits.

"If you think of Ultraman, I'm pretty sure mecha design doesn't spring to mind." Not with the Ultramen themselves, no. The vehicles and cool mecha used by their supporting cast, though, certainly. The Heisei trio are famous for this - from the transforming and combining GUTS Wings and Eagles of the Dyna/Tiga teams to the genuinely neat capsule vehicles of the XIG team from Gaia, I have great memories of the Ultra series vehicles.

I have known Ultraman since childhood but was nvr an actual fan of the franchise dispite its influences in a lot of media I grew up with. About a couple of years before the Netflix adaption, I found the manga of said series and fell in love with this mecha reimagination of Ultraman. So imagine my suprise when I see the anime adaption of it and was excited to watch it though I have to be perfectly honest, the 3D animation was a bit clunky for me but still a fun watch. Though the show has ended, the manga has not and I highly recommend the manga cuz it had such a gripping story that made you crave the next chapter to unravel the mystery behind the truth of Ultraman and the star cluster council.

One thing I would like to see is a manga or anime adaptation of the spin-off photo novel "Ultraman Suit: Another Universe", so that we can see some mechanized ultraman suits based on some of the heisei ultras, such as Tiga & Zero.

Mecha in ultraman is actually really, REALLY important. The support team (the og SSSP & its successors), all are designed to be unique (and sell toys, like gundam). From cruise liner looking ships from SSSP to much more streamlined jets in later series, to even current series' love for kaiju sized mecha (king joe storage custom, terraphaser etc), mechanical design has always been an important part of the ultra series. So bandai, where me king joe model kit?

I'm a huge ass fan of Ultraman (as without Ultraman we wouldn't have mecha anime strangely enough), and yes I do love the Netflix Ultraman based on the manga by Eiichi Shimizu.

Just adding something as a big fan of Ultraman. They are trying to make Ultraman more mecha in general, so is not so strange. Since Z Tsubaraya is pushing Ultraman to be a tokusatsu mecha basically

I'm sorry I couldn't stand this show, each season had a completely different tone and most of it was set to incredibly boring aside from season 2. I THOUGHT it was building to some kind of point or even a de-construction of Ultraman but all the characters are so completely removed from the original Ultras and/or their hosts that any attempt at commentary loses its meaning, though the constant flip-flopping of plot elements and tones between the seasons made it very obvious that they did not know where it was all going. I don't even consider "Ultramen could take over the world" and "Humans trust Ultraman too much" as even worthy of acknowledgement cuz that's a basic undercurrent in every Ultraman show as-is, and both points are completely undermined as "pure" humans in Ultraman suits are more than capable of handling the Ultras. No offense to anyone who enjoyed it, but god, what a mess.

I will admit, the narrative of the show is a mess, especially season 2. season 3 felt like it was trying to get back on track to what season 1 was going with, but ultimately couldn't.

@@sir_coma60 Oh absolutely, I'm only a fan of season 2 because there was something to supplement the narrative being thoroughly unfocused which was the action and Taro (like, the character lol) and they even toned that down in the final season!
