Honestly I can't think of anyone who would be choosing between these two vehicles. The Axion's length obviously imposes compromises in storage space compared to something 3 feet longer; the Travato's length obviously imposes compromises if you ever drive and park in cities, and even in some campsites. In our case we live in a condo in a very urban area and use our RV as our "2nd car." We can't park anything longer than 18ft. in the parking area behind our home, so it's not that the Axion is a better choice--it was, quite literally, our only possible choice, other than getting a camper van instead of an RV. Every RV is a compromise between what it's like in motion and what it's like standing still. Your needs determine whether you prioritize one or the other. If "in motion" including parallel parking are important, the Axion is best RV in North America regardless of price and amenities. If "standing still" matters most, practically everything else is better than an Axion. I will add that some comments on this thread characterize the Axion as being really for a single camper/fulltimer. But I think this depends on where you're coming from. We're coming from 20 years of using a VW Eurovan Camper van. So for us the Axion is a huge, spacious upgrade. And having spent 20 years of camping sleeping as a couple in a 42" wide bed I'll say that once we slept in the 47" wide Axion we'd never accept a narrow bed. But even here that only matters if you're a couple, like us. For a single it's irrelevant. The biggest shortcoming of the Axion for us is the lack of additional seltbelted seating positions--something you didn't mention, in part because few other "shorter" motorhomes offer this, while all camper vans do. The Travato has plenty of competition in its price and length class. The Axion has none in its length class. Perhaps if it's a big success more will appear. But for now, for us, as I said, it was the Axion or not own a motorhome.

Few years back I owned a Roadtrek Agile. Did not like the Sprinter diesel at all. Then I tried a TT. Nope! Next came a Travato 59G. Improvement, but still not happy. So, I traded it for an Axion because of shorter length, large rear bath, openness, increased tow capapcity , and cool Eco-Trek system. Now, I am very happy with my Axion and use it as my only vehicle. I can go anywhere with it and haul anything or tow anything I need, such as cargo or livestock trailer. Or, even a light weight travel trailer should I want to have a camping base sometime in the future. Only two negatives are 1) the bed, which I am working on modifying. Hymer, oops, now Thor, needs to improve on that by making something like a slated pull out that can be stopped at any width a person wants to accommodate one or two people. I.e. I am the lone user of mine and would like to leave passage way to bath when bed is made up for sleeping...larger than the 24" bench, but smaller than the full width which blocks off access. 2) no room for a MaxxAir fan. I consider the manual awning a plus as I rarely use it and when I had a Travato, it came open while away from home and would not close. I was stuck for a couple of hours until someone came and discovered it blew a fuse. I'll take the simple manual one, thank you very much.

Marsha Durant Higginbotham agree that the bed should have an “in between”, I think the majority of Axion owners are single. I’m looking at one myself. Would love to hear more about how your planning to change the bed/sofa. To have a little more room to get to the bathroom would be wonderful. As a single bed it’s just a bit to small. Somewhere in between would be perfect. Hope you’ll consider sharing your ideas for modding the bed. Happy holidays!

@@benvernick Please consider joining Carado Axion Facebook page. Lots of collective knowledge and experiences there and several mod ideas from various members. Have been busy with the holidays, but hope to soon do the mod. Here is a picture of the supplies I will use. I will remove the top board which serves as the support of the bed when open; remove the piano hinge on outside edge; add legs (after painting), and handles. Then just grab handles, pull top board out as far as desired, let down to rest on legs. Arrange cushions and make bed. With all cushions in "full" position which is 47" wide (NOT a true "full"); with back 13" wide cushion, it is 37" leaving 10" to squeeze by; with smaller 9" wide smaller arm rest cushions, instead of back cushion, the bed will be 33" wide, leaving 14" to pass through from one end of van to other. Not perfect solution, but should serve me well until I find someone who can build a more permanent slat type pull out. Oh, I also intend to lock with latches when in fully closed position to keep from sliding out while driving. Hope you get some use out of this. Come on over to Carado Axion page. Happy New Year! image.png

@@dynabanjo 1) hate the smell and nastiness of diesel; 2) nearly got stranded a couple of times in rural areas where no diesel was available; and 3) I just do not like the feel of the Sprinter. Cannot pinpoint why..just didn't "fit". Never felt comfortable in it. Also, do not like rear sofa/bed. The first time I drove the Ram Promaster, I felt at home in it. I had a Travato G for 3 years but put less than 4,000 miles on it. I have had the Axion since May and have already gone over 4,000 miles. There are things I would change, but the Axion is closest to what I want and use it as my only vehicle.

I have enjoyed your channel, BUT I found this comparison is off, and I'm only responding because some people who might be considering one of these vans might need to know some shortcomings, especially when referring to $80,000 dealer asking prices for both vans; at that price point, the Axion would be fully-loaded with Ecotrek lithium modules, 200 watts of solar and underhood generator, while that is almost a $25,000 add-on for the Travato. Having these power options is a major difference, compared to awarding points for items like higher utility hookup location and an outdoor shower (well, open the Axion's rear door and the shower head is already there with an extension, no need to worry about an additional cut out or winterizing element :-) The other area that I feel is completely apples to oranges is SIZE, comparing Travato specs like: a separate fixed dining area, an additional sleeping area, and a separate enclosed bath, etc. -- well, the Travato is one inch shy of 21 feet long!! That is significant, compared to 17 ft 9 in !!! And some aspects of the comparison were unfortunately incorrect, like no AC outlet in the kitchen area. I can go on and on. But I am a biased Axion owner.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the “T” so far and have taken many trips in it. 2019 plans include 3 months all the way to Key West and then 5 months to Alaska. Another great comparison review! One of the things that's rarely mentioned when comparing class B RV's is utility. A vehicle that's capable of serving double duty when needed, whether the ability to accommodate 8' boards through the rear doors. Or loading an appliance in the side slider. For me the Axion is the choice. Thanks again!

I like the attention that you give to length of all campers. You make it about handling and parking. In my city, Key West, FL, there is an ordinance against vehicles over 20 ft. Will the cops cite you? Doubtful. But this should be a consideration. In Key West, there is no camping except for military. When you roll into the southernmost city with your 22 ' camper, you are breaking the law.

Great review as always. I'm still looking for a rig, mainly for work, and while bells and whistles are important, I find the core features like a solid build and included solar packages to be a necessity -- also the price has be affordable and then some. Dropping $80k for a 1-2 yr warranty is borderline crazy in my opinion. I really like the Hymer Aktiv 2.0 but I'm 6'4 and concerned I won't sleep comfortably. At any rate, great review!

The Axion should of came out significantly cheaper than all the other Class B RVs considering it was very basic and put on the smallest Promaster chassis which would have helped bolster sales by volume An MSRP that’s $15K or even $20K under any other Class B would have saved the company because the volume of sales would justify the smaller profit margins Afterall the goal of the Erwin Hymer group was to attract entry level buyers There is immense appeal to having a Class B with such a small footprint for maneuverability purposes and discretion especially in urban communities Instead of an overhead AC unit it would have been a good idea to use the same under mount AC system similar as the Axion Studio for ease of logistics and increased flexibility Axion and Banff had overhead but Axion Studio gets under-mount AC just adds to logistical and service problems having to install and service two different cooling systems versus one when you’re trying to save money and streamline Having an undermount system also frees up the roofline to add a Maxxaire roof fan or extra solar panels for the extra green appeal or a massive luggage rack and compartment up top etc. Plus if someone just didn’t want a luggage rack up top or hauling a kayak up top the overall height would mean its lower and more aerodynamic enhancing gas mileage and could fit better through drive throughs at fast food places or banks and maybe some parking garages The Axion should have revolutionized the Class B segment with those changes Minor issues like putting the TV across from lounge on a fold down or swivel mount could have been better utilized or the weird two door bathroom replaced by a single door or pull out bed or even lap seat belts on the lounge so you could legally carry 5 passengers with driver versus only 2 etc could have been implemented However the overall intelligent design and footprint of it all on a short 1500 chassis and intelligent use of space with the front lounge and rear bath could have seriously changed the game with a model of entry level low profit margin but high volume sales that would make those considering it go for it especially urban environments I hope whoever buys the group now that its in receivership continues with the Carado lineup and look at those things and implements them moving forward Could you imagine a base model with all those changes coming in with the price tag of say a decently equipped Expedition? Which would you buy? I wish I could apply for the job to head Carado well if whoever buys it now keeps the lineup

First off hello I really enjoy your channel you put a ton of content and it’s very informative I’m heavily thinking of leaving the apt life and would really believe I’d enjoy living on the road or campground or dry camp . My question is finding the right rv for my life style. I work full time in a hospital and right now live 10 minutes away from work and I’m not happy living by myself in an apartment I’d like to move around and love to go travel every once in a while . I live in Virginia by Dulles airport and 30 minutes dc . I’m an engineer so working on things is fine I’ve been camping my whole life grew up in a tent pop up and then 30 foot travel trailer . I’d love to have a four season rv enjoy the class b ruv style. If you could recommend any type I’d really appreciate it but if not I totally understand. Thank you again for your great videos.

Good evening. My wife and I just discovered your Vlog. We are impressed with your site. So, we would like to propose that you consider addressing things from a different perspective. We watched your video about what kind of buyer are you and we agree with your assessment in concept. But, sometimes things are Not Black and White. For us, we are interested in a Class B or B Plus that is built with quality components and built with quality construction methods. However, we are also looking to procure one at a very good price point. One thing that is totally lacking in all RV reviews and assessments is any Long-Term Tests. There are no evaluations of RV's over a course of months to years. How do manufacturers products hold up over months and years of road miles. How do they hold up after hundreds or thousands of road vibration/bump/pothole miles. There is precious little info on the long-term quality of RV's. So, while it is unlikely that you can afford to engage in such Long-Term test reviews perhaps you could encourage your followers to give you input on what they purchased and how the RV they purchased has held up over time. Since Ford can do quality assessment of a 18k Fiesta we do not see how purveyors of 100k to in excess of 200k Class B's cannot employ Quality Assurance Life-Time testing into their manufacturing and production processes.

@@Ultramobility...Thank you.:) I would like to say in the Axion's defense,,, I prefer the open feel of this coaches over-all floor-plan,, not just the wet-bath area,,. It doesn't have a closed claustrophobic feel as the all dark wood framed out Travato. Also,,the light coloring of the Axion interior helps add too and give the feeling of more room/spaciousness even though it's 3 ft shorter. Also not having a Micro is no biggie imo,, I have yet to use mine in the Revel,, which is what gives you the larger wardrobe in the back. This is a single person's unit and I think it's up-beat, easy to manage/maintain, fuel efficient (25mi per gallon HW and 18 in town) with a Ram chassis that can be serviced by any mechanic. There are people like you that can care less that one rv is 3 feet shorter. I on the other disagree with the point system in the video. I'm baffled how an factory option for a screen is equal to a foot less in length. I'd love to see an Axion in person but there's not one for sale within 500 miles of the large metropolitan area I live in. We'll just have to agree to disagree. Have a great 2019.

I you are not comparing apples to apples here because you are taking the longest comparing with the shortest. Maybe try comparing the Travato 59G with the Carado Hymer Aktiv 2.0 Class B which to me seems more of a fair comparison. Give it a retry.

the shortest got p;oints for being short - maneuverability and parking. the longer one got points for what it does with the extra space. it evens out depending on how the manufacturer chooses to use that space.

I can’t say I find this to be a fair comparison of these coaches. You compare a 17’ to a 21’ coach and I would expect the Travato to win hands down, so how is that a fair assessment? Also you priced a a fully loaded Axion but did not price a fully loaded Travato, or the Axion would have been $20k cheaper based on the lithium battery option on the Travato, and would have put the Travato at $100k.

what would like to compare the Axion to? Base model to base model the Axion would still get blown out of the water. the Travato has just so many standard features that the Axion doesn't have. i like the Axion a lot but the Travato neutralizes all the advantages of the Axion while giving the buyer a bunch of standard features that are not available on the Axion. Doesn't mean the Axion isn't a great RV.

I still think the Travato would win, and by a good margin, but it feels unfair to give the Travato 2 points for having the hookups higher, but to give the Axion only 3 points for being 3 feet shorter. Consider all the things that you gave a single point for, and it feels more like the shorter Axion should get 2 or 3 points for each of those feet that it does not have. That is a huge advantage for any of a number of things, while where the electrical (1) and water (1) hooks up are is a relatively minor point. I would probably have given only one point for both, not 2. But, if we remove one point from the Travato, it still scores 36, and even if you gave 3 points for each foot, that would only put the Axion at 24, which would still be a big win. And, I think three per foot is a bit much. I just think that making 1 foot of length equal to the electrical or water hook up, or the power awning, or the inclusion of a separate black tank to be a bit unfair. Lastly, while I understand the need to review price from a real world setup, it feels a tiny bit unfair to hold a point from the Axion because of something the manufacturer has nothing to do with. Great review though, keep it up.

Better off building your own van or paying someone to do it. I feel like the RV industry needs to get closer to the 50k range. Everything is just to pricey

I don't see no convection micro in the 59G :) And please do not review the Pleasure Way Tofino, it's a camper van and not an RV so it has nothing in common with these mini class As.

I thought it was reasonable. I didn't like the Pleasureway Ascent vs Winnebago Revel review because the vans were almost opposite in purpose. This is a difference in size not purpose.

I don't think having water & power "up high" is an advantage at all. As a matter of fact, I'd LOWER the score for that. I've RV'd for decades, and drooping cables and torque-causing ( especially on water ) connections are a hazard. Putting power right next to water is also crazy, but ubiquitous for some reason. Having the water connection high has only one advantage - for filling the tank. On the lounges - the table & rear set-up on the Travato is VERY uncomfortable. The table, especially, with the swing-out is VERY LOW for larger people ( I'm 6' 3" ). The vertical seating also only fits one adult, unless they REALLY like each other. The couch in the Axion is Much better for lounging.
