🔴 *Help support Ultramobility with a one time donation: **www.paypal.me/ultramobility* I heard back from Carado about quality but after this video was cut. Here's what they had to say about the issue: "(We) have not heard any issues with the bathroom door. Mirror clips are now being added to permanently secure the mirrors." Check out my playlist for the Axion which includes the Mini-Review and 360 degree video tour! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqHWeGNogcmkaq8

Thought you'd like to hear of my experience with the mirror in my trailer. I too found it laying on the floor, smashed. It was also held in place with adhesive strips, although far more than the Axiom. To be fair, it is stored in the desert and the temps were in the one hundred teens for days on end. However, I will reinstall a new mirror with clips. BTW, my trailer is a 2017 Airstream.

Ultramobility Neil, I am interested in purchasing and want to ask have you ever thought of trying to gather a group of your ready to buy followers for a possible group purchase to enable a discount? I am ready to purchase something between the 15’6” long Recon Envy and the longer Axion Loft but haven’t decided and may even explore hiring a build out company. Haven’t decided yet but am actively researching.

We bought ours a few months ago--fully loaded, including the underhood generator which eliminates the need for a noisy standalone generator that makes all your campground neighbors hate you. Good review but you missed a couple of things. First, the TV option for $840 includes a Blu-Ray player, which you would have seen if you opened all the overhead cabinets. Both run on 12V, so you don't need to run the inverter to run them. A rooftop antenna is included as well, in the back of the van. Second. no couples will sleep in this with their heads at the rear. You're going to sleep with your head to the front, and then my spouse only has to crawl over my legs to go to the bathroom. It works fine. Also, I'mn 6'1" and change and I fit on the bed as long as I sleep on the folded--out portions. Some owners compalin that it's a bit of a hassle to fold out the platform because there's no strap or indent. Not a biggie. Carado is providing magnetic latches for the drawers under warranty if you ask them. There is no spare tire--its space was taken up by the water tank. They do provide a power inflater with a a green goo option that might keep a tire inflated 'till you get somewhere to change it. Fortunately flats are less of a problem with the tires we have nowadays. You can get a hitch-mounted spare. One crucial point is that while there are camper vans this length, there is no other RV this length, and while B class owners with their 20-22 ft. vans claim they drive and park just fine, we live in an urban area, in a condo complex, and the Axion is the only RV we could buy that we can easily park in our condo complex. Its longer brother the Banff is 19'6" and that's too long for many urban parallel parking spaces. Not a problem for country folk, but a big one for city people like us. We bought a Walmart hitch mounted folding cargo platform that increases our storage by 2 27 gallon storage bins, and the rear doors still open with the bins off the platform. You mentioned no bug screens. We bought Skeeter Beater screens with magnetic attachments. They work fine. Bottom line is that for folks moving up from camper vans, like us, the Axion is spacious. For people moving down from 20 ft. Winnies it's cramped. Depends on where you're coming from. If you want a true RV--and that means a bathroom--there is only the Axion in North America at less than 19 feet or so. So for us it was a no-brainer purchase. There's a Carado Axion forum on Facebook BTW. [EDIT ADD] The awning is hand cranked and has a learning curve but has LED rope lights built in, which is pretty spiffy.. Draining the black/gray water tank is pretty straightforward but you do have to get low to the ground to do it. One minor note: the clothes closet opposite the bathroom isn't high enough for our clothing, which sort of bunches up instead of hanging. Not a major point, but just to show I'm not all starry-eyed about it. Also you'll need at least a 6' ladder to reach the top to hose the dust off the solar panels periodically. And 8' ladder would be better. Or one of those ladder options that mounts to the rear door. Other owners have told me that you can run the rooftop AC up to 4 hours off the batteries before having to crank up the underhood generator BTW.

phthisics thank you for your comments which along with the review have seriously swayed me toward this coach. You answered my concerns about the doors staying closed plus others. I’ll be traveling solo and, like you, appreciate the shorter length. This coach, with the options, gives me all the features that were lacking in the Hymer that I just couldn’t settle for. I’m new to the RV world and don’t understand what you were alluding to regarding extra storage space and doors. Would you be willing to share any additional info about your your likes and dislikes? I’m especially curious about the comfort of the bed; did you get a mattress topper; if so where and how do you stow it? Thank you again for taking the time to comment, they are extremely helpful. I found a new 2018 one two hours from me and I’m seriously considering going to see it tomorrow.

@@knowthyself7500 Glad to help. Our VW Eurovan Camper poptop that we had to 20 years was 17 ft. long--9" shorter than the Axion--and had no overhead cabinets due to the poptop but it has a lot of storage behind the back seat--space needed for the bathroom in the Axion. But we wanted the bathroom and the short length. Our add-on hitch mounted platform (Walmart, $60) folds out of the way when not in use (or can be removed) and holds 2 27 gallon storage tubs like you can buy at any harware store, secured with multiple bungee cords. That makes up for the storage our Axion's bathroom reduces. The Axion doesn't have a rear hatch. Instead it has 2 doors that swing out (and use a special hinge to fold all the way back around the van's body). Many hitch-mounted storage platforms are too high and don't let you open those doors, which is unacceptable. But my measuring paid off, and the Axions's door clear the platform when it's empty. The platform measures 5 ft. x about 2 ft. Folded, it only add a few inches to the van's length. Very handy I think. As for the bed, yet we got a mattress topper, and it's a pain to figure out where to put it when you're not sleeping on it! We got it from an online store called Mattress Insider in Colorado. They offer many different sizes to fit the odd sizes many RVs use, and also use the densest memory foam available, with a sturdy cover. Ours cost $139 as I recdall. I believe ours measures 47 or 48" x 73 or 74". It fits snugly and won't roll around. When we're traveling I fold it in half and place it under the lounge's foam bottom part. Fits perfectly. then when we're parked and not sleeping but using the van, I shlepp it onto that folding platform, folded a second time. That way I can open one of the back doors, flip the double-folded topper over, and then open the second door. This is in good weather of course. In less good weather, the Axion has a big awning, and I plant to put the topper on the two plastic bins that travel on the plaform, with a tarp over it if need be. One warning is that because the foam is so high quality it's also heavier than a 2" topper you'd get at Costco. And no you don't need a thicker topper--thatls the beauty of using highest quality foam. Our bviggest gripe is that the frawer hardware isn't great, unlike the cabinet doors and latches which are fine. I could imagine upgrading the drawers but more likely we'll just handle them gingerly. Everything else that others complain about is pretty much a requirement given the van's short legnth. We all want Dr. Who's Tardis--bigger on the indise than on the outside. But that's not how physics works. Every RV is a compromise between what it's like moving and what it's like sitting still---the Axion leans toward the moving part, I'd argue that in motion it's the best RV in America. Drives, handles and parks like a car, only with a humongous windshield--great view--and you're as high off the ground as in some semis, which it great while driving, though it also means you have to clibmi up into the cab. Unfolding the bed platform is slightly finicky, though you could add a pull strap if that's a problem. And the electronics/battery/Alde furnace all require a lot of study before you get the hang of them, but it pays off. Our Eurovan had a Suburban furnace that worked but was noisy and used a lot of propane. The Alde is tate of the art, can run silently, and work of pure electricity, pure propane or a combio,. The fridge is all electric so it you have a shoreline you'll only use propane for the stove (or no propane if you make do with the microwave). It handles pretty well, given its height. Others in the Facebook Axion forum have installed aftermarket Sumo springs that give it more resistance to sway. I haven't decided it we need that. One nice touch is that while it defaults to the headlights always being on, that's undesireable if you're using the underhood generator at night in a campgrou8nd. Fortunately there's a setting that leaves the lights ott unless you choose to turn them on. So overall, component choice seems top notch--pretty high end actually--which the cabinetry has some unfortunate cost savings. But because we coulodn't park any other RV in our condo complex and wanted an RV rtather than a nother van camper, the Axion was our only choice. We couldn't park its brother the Banff here, so even that was out. All this is about adults using it, and since it only has 2 seatbelts and one bed, that's what it is. A family with kids can't buy a Carado. I mention this because the bug screens built into the side windows could be damaged easily by careless kids. Not a problem for you or us, though. I recommend the Skeeter Beater magntized bug screens for the side and rear doors BTW.

Appreciate your owner feedback. My husband's main concern with all Dodge camper vans is the driver seat/steering wheel comfort. He's also 6'1"+ and needs legroom and wants tilting steering. How is the drive comfort for you?
@phthisics
@phthisics 6 жыл бұрын
@@freebirds6047 I'm long-waisted--in fact I can wear my 5'6" wife's pants--so what works for me may differ from what works for your hubby unless he's also long-waisted. Our other vehicle is a Mazda 3 that we love, which has a tilt-telescoping steering wheel, so I know what that's like, and I'd love to have a tilt steering when in the Promaster. So I see it as a definite deficit. The result for me , being more like someone 6'2 or 3" from the waist up, is that it's like driving a bus, with you pulling part of the steering wheel towrad or away from you rather than the way most of us drive sedans. On the other hand, the only alternative van to the Promasterr (at this length) is the Ford Transit, a RWD vehicle with drive hump to the rear wheels necessitating a higher floor. I can stand up straight inside the Axion , even with shoes on, except for a bit that's about half a foot in diameter under the rooftop AC, and a rail I have to duck under to enter the batchroom (in which I can also stand upright). If I had to choose between being able to stand inside it and having a tilting steering wheel I'd take the former. To some extent it's about managing your own expectations. This isn't a sports car, and having a bus-like driver-vehicie interface isn't bad considering what it is . Honestly I'm far more annoyed by the mechanism both seats use to adjust the angle of the back. Try it and you'll see.

Neil you mentioned the bathroom door. I’m not a fan either. If they extend the closet, that would resolve the issue. Plus if they reposition bar in the closet like a traditional closet, you can fit/hang more clothes. Another thing, they really should install better knobs/locking so the doors don’t fly open while driving. Also, I’d rather have the fridge door open the other way where I would have easier access while in the kitchen. However, being single, this has to be my favorite RV. Subtract the TV. Thank you!

I own a 2018 Carado Banff which is the 20ft version with more seating... I absolutely love it! It maybe 3 ft longer, but its easy to drive and park that I drive it every weekend anywhere... home depot, grocery, to friends houses etc... Yes some of the cabinetry quality could have been better but at the price its something I can overlook (compared to spending 30k+ more). The twin bed/lounge area is amazing and I have easily fit 8 adults in it comfortably at a football tailgate. The Axion at 17ft is great but add 3 more feet and 3-4 more seating capability + twice the storage, the Banff blows it away...
@phthisics
@phthisics 6 жыл бұрын
It's 21" longer than the Axion. The Banff is fine but the galley in the Axion has a better layout, and while the Axion can park anywhere, with a Banff in a city you'll be looking for double parallel parking spaces sometimes, and some campgrounds have campsites with an 18 ft. limit. Also, the lounge in the Baff is at the other end of van from the cabin, so you can't entertain using the swiveling seats in the cabin. The Axion can entertain 5 people easily and 6 if they're friendly--even 7 if you add a footstool in front of the fridge. The Banff is limited to four people usually, though I can imagine friendly smaller people beiing able to squeeze 6 in there. How many have you fitted in it? Also, we have a folding cargo platform mounted to the receiver hitch that increased our storage capacility by two 27 gallon storage boxes. The reat doors still open without the boxes on the platform. Lastly, we couldn't have bought a Banff because we couldn't park it in our condo complex. The Axion was literally our only choice if we wanted a true RV. Also, doesn't the Banff use a Suburban furnace? Our Eurovan Camper had one and it worked but was noisy. The Axion's Alde is silent.

@@Ultramobility I really love the electrical system. The underhood generator,(GU), 400w lithium power, and solar allow me to be off the grid for days. The Alde 3010 system is amazing as well. I'm just blown away at how they maximized every little square inch in this camper van! Not having a spare tire is a bit worrisome, but having tire sealant and a compressor will generally do the trick. Carado does have an included 2-year roadside assistance for the rare instance of a blowout. Also, the drawer latches are terrible, but I installed some childproof devices that keep them secure. Overall, I'm very pleased with my Axion. It was awesome that I was able to negotiate a purchase price under 65K as well.

Another comprehensive review Neil 👍👍. I’m not sure how to quantify this but after buying many houses and cars in my lifetime I have an instant eye for quality. I stepped into an Axion, spent 15 seconds and stepped out. For someone like me the fit and finish quality just did not exist. However, I think Hymer is realizing a potential market with buyers who expect base level lithium technology and some component pieces to be top drawer like the Alde system. You are providing a very important consumer service - thx!

Hi Neil, Regarding the combo waste tank I would not worry. I had a 1985 pilgrim camper that had a combined tank. I never had an issue. There were no smells in the sinks, or shower pan because each have the "U" Joints under each to block out smells (just like you have in your home). The only difference, back then, is that you would have to give your sewer hose a better cleaning because you did not have your cleaner grey water to clean out your sewer hose (remember the golden rule: "open black tank first, close, then open grey tank to rinse"). However in the Carado Axion they are using a "mercado sewer pump" so the problem is eliminated.

Thanks for your review Neil. This is a unit I've been investigating. Gotta love the length of this unit, and it's a pretty good layout. Some cons that would steer me away are: A) The tank capacities. The toilet in the Axion is a macerator toilet. The toilet manufacturer says there are 2 flush settings, 1 qt, or 2 qt. That's not good for boondocking. I read thru the entire owners manual on the Carrado website, and they recommend pouring a pail of water down the bathroom sink to flush the tank and hose when dumping. B) The lack of positive catches on all cupboards and drawers. The one owner review I saw on here, they had to secure drawers with bungees while traveling to keep em closed. C) No door screen option. D) Priced too high. RT Simplicity SRT, although 2 feet longer, is a better bargain, despite it's cons, which is another story.
@Ultramobility

thanks for sharing all that research. agree that the SRT is a great value for the money esp considering its 6 year warranty.

For door screens we got Skeeter Beater no-see-um screens that attach with magnets, on both the sliding door and the rear entry. Works fine. All the cupboards have positive latching. It's only the drawers that are a problem, and Carado is willing to install maganetic latches under warranty. The short length is the feature that requires the combined black/gray tank. You can't have both. Boondocking is possible with this, though of course the tank capacities are limited. See the Facebook Axion site--some owners there have boondocked with their Axions.

I also drove one, and found it easy to drive, and love that the price I am looking at includes the lithium, volt start, solar, and television with dvd. I am not much of a television person, but since the one I put a hold deposit on has one, I will take it...lol...I am actually planning on full timeing in this, and will be fifty percent in rv parks, 50% boon docking, sometimes driveways of friends and families while visiting them. I am single, and used to tiny spaces and van campers. The small holding tanks do not bother me, as I will be around places to empty tanks frequently, and actually 80% of the time will have access to other showers via gym and a few other places. It is basic, but seems to have everything I need, and you can be sure I will personalize it. Afterall--I am a girlie girl...lol...Some friends of mine have the Axion, very satisfied with theirs.

My conclusion: BUY! But this applies only to the budget minded solo or couple that wants to get into RVing for the price of a luxury car and who can eschew the bells and whistles of the higher priced models. So glad that you caught them on the mirror, which could be a problem when bouncing down a forest road. I am sure that because of you they are going to make the changes to secure the mirror with clips. I was a little disappointed that you did not look inside the cabinets to do your usual check to see if they used nails vs screws, but maybe you covered that elsewhere. The size(claustrophobia) is not a problem since the purpose of this van is to travel and sleep, with daytime spent exploring, hiking, tailgating, etc. Besides, at home, when not working, I spend most of my day in a 10 X10 man cave. Just imagine having this compact vehicle as a fishing or hunting cabin. I notice that the Carado has the same engine as my JEEP, the PENTASTAR, used across the FCA truck/JEEP inventory, so it should be reliable. The only bone to pick with you is the pricing. If I could find a new CARADO for under $65,000, I would be first in line at the dealership. I have looked at several adds and the imaginary "base" model is difficult to find. They come with unwanted TVs, lithium, and solar factory installed. And even if there is one for $65,000 the buyer should not forget to figure in taxes and registration. Sorry to be so long-winded, but I love your reviews, and you have now found and "consider" the CARADO as a reasonable RV for the "rest of us." Thumbs up! Already subscribed! Will soon be a new Patreon supporter.

It also applies to condo/city dwellers like my wife & me. There is literally not one other RV made in North America that we could park by our condo. Also, the "budget" part isn't exactly the case--our Alde furnace is state of the art, along with the underhood generator and solar panel system and EcoTrek lithium battery system. The cabinetry is more budget-minded but the components aren't--one reason it isn't any cheaper than it is. And I really like the Promaster instead of a Transit (no Sprint is short enough, so that doesn't matter). The Promaster's front wheel drive means I can stand up straight inside (I'm 6'1"). Transit's rear wheel drive makes the floor too high.

Another great review! We have a home-built RAM 1500 and absolutely love the size. It's my ever-day driver. Turns on a dime and gives you change. PS: There are a lot of bells and whistles on this van (yay), but it doesn't exploit one of the best things about the RAM -- the width!. You can fit a near-queen in a RAM (sideways, across the back, giving you a big bed *and* a garage). The Corado is great for a single person but the sleeping situation is not ideal.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU 🙏. I’ve been nagging you forever to do a review of this van and it did not disappoint, great job! As usual I thought it was a unbiased and honest review. I’ve still got this van on my shortlist, the upgrade to the EcoTrek is awesome for a van this size. Sunshine State RV also offers this with Volt Start, not sure if that is a dealer only option? Volt Start would be nice if you have a pet. I’ll be traveling solo so for me probably wouldn’t need it. I think the positive latches are easily fixed, but if it’s made from stick frame and staples, which I suspect it is, that maybe a deal breaker. I think the Aktiv 1.0 might be the better choice, but will have to test drive them both to see if there is a huge difference in maneuvering. The Ascent would be my first choice but it’s unlikely I’ll be able to afford it. Thanks again for this review! It’s a nasty snow ❄️ day in Philadelphia so this was a pleasant surprise.

Pretty sure VoltStart is a dealer only option. Not listed in the Axion literature. I don't think the Axion cabinetry uses staples. It seems pretty sturdy, really--just needs magnetic latches. The cabinets all have positive locking latches and work fine. As for difference in manuvering, we experience this both ways because we have a Walmart hitch mounted folding platform, with which the Axion is 20 ft. long., and with it folded up. 18 ft. long. In my experience it makes a big difference in finding places to park and then parking in them. When platform is deployed we have to find two adjacent spaces in most shopping center parking lots, for example.

What a difference a few years make. When Hymer spoke of entering the US market, the words often spoken were PREMIUM. Hymer has done a 180 degree turn and introduced models that have undercut the more mainstream offerings from Winnebago and others in price. I am curious to see how much of a demand exists for this type of product. More and more people have embraced the idea of selling their brick and mortar home and live full-time in a van. This would be one of the cheapest ways to do so in a new van. More options are always a good thing.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 жыл бұрын

Of the handful of van suitable for RV-ification, the Promaster stands out, to me, as being by far the best overall, regardless of price. And the Axion's electronic/HVAC options are all top grade as are as I can call, starting with the Alde water heater/furnace. Where Hymer economized, I think, was in the cabinetry fit/finish/latching (though only the drawers have a latching problem--the cabinets are fine). So it's not really a budget van with low end components.

The more research I did on building my own, or hiring someone to, the more I realized why people are always selling their own DIY Camper Vans: Things like unfixable rattles, insurance issues, rust, mold, close calls with electrocution, fire/explosions, and strange illnesses cause them to bail. I accept the fact that there are quality issues with the large companies in the pursuit of profit. But at least they're proven safe, because their bottom lines depend on it.

I don't see a privacy issue with the bathroom, if this is supposed to be built for 1 person. Unless water leaks out of that gap, and into the living space. Then that would be a problem. With the optional electrical upgrade and VoltStart generator, why not an electric refrigerator and/or induction cooker to remove the need for propane? I love the size, but the rear bathroom layout removes the under-bed "garage" one would get in something like the Activ layout, especially since the Promaster platform is ideal for (and known for) its ability to sleep "across" the van.

The Alde heater can run on electricity or propane or a combo. The fridge is electric. The stove is gas, but the Axion includes a microwave as well. I like being able to use either gas or electricity for the furnace, myself. The short length of the Axion mandates a lot of compromises. We wanted a bathroom, and the very back is the best place for it. The lounge in front lets you use the cabin seats swiveled around as part of the lounge area. The Activ layout requires a van 2 feet longer---and its greater length would have ruled it out for us, actually.

The Axion is 17'9" long. The Aktiv is around 20 ft. long. If you think they're comparable you're kidding yourself. Our Axion has a hitch-mounted folding platform, which when deployed makes it about the same length as the Aktiv, and I've driven and parked it with the plaform folded up and deployed, and the difference in parking is night and day. Especially parallel parking spaces, for which the average length is 20 ft. Try putting a vehicle 20 ft. long into a 20 ft. space unless you have a forklift pick it up and put it there. Maybe the difference is whether you live in a densely urban area, as I do, or out in the suburbs or the country. For getting around in urban areas and using the van as a 2nd vehicle and not just for camping, the Axion is unmatched. OTOH if you don't need the shorter length, of course you should get a longer van without the compromises required by the Axion's length.

Neil - you the man! Great review. One question- how do you think this corado compares to the Tofino for overall value?
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 жыл бұрын
I think the two are very different. this Axion is more of a "true" RV with a bathroom and room to stand up. The Tofino is more of a traditional "camper van". What baffles me is that the height of the Tofino is not that much less than this Axion because of the Roof rack so I'm not sure what you're getting by not going full height on the roof. Neither is going to fit in your garage. the warranty on the Tofino is much better at 5 years. I haven't seen the build quality in person to determine how it compares but my gut says that the Tofino will have much higher build quality.
@ArvinAsh
@ArvinAsh 6 жыл бұрын
@@Ultramobility Totally agree with you. The Tofino would have been much more desirable, if PW put the money into a full bathroom instead of the folding tent contraption on the roof, and put it on a high roof version of the Promaster. yeah the Tofino and the Axion are almost two different vans. the Axion is more of a true RV in the sense that it has a proper bathroom and you can stand up in it. The Tofino is more of an old-school VW camper van. both are great but for different uses and needs.
@calendarwhiteknight2938

It will be interesting to see Neil's comparison between the Tofino and Axiion, but ultimately, these vehicles are fundamentally different. The Axion, with standing height space, toilet (plus tanks), and plethora of storage cabinets, is a true RV, with limited passenger carrying capability, and the clearance height inconveniences that all high roof vehicles face. The Tofino with its belted seats and rear cargo area, can replace the family SUV/minivan but with the added benefits of sleeping accommodations and kitchenette. Though similar in size, I think the vehicles attract different audiences.
@phthisics
@phthisics 6 жыл бұрын
@@calendarwhiteknight2938 Absolutely. We had a VW Eurovan Camper as our 2nd vehicle for 20 years, and its specs are remarkably similar to those of the Tofino (taking into account how much passenger vehicles have changed in the last 20 years). Now we have an Axion, giving up the ability to seat 6 passengers with seat belts for the ability to get up and go to the bathroom at 3am while camping without leaving the vehicle. That said, as long as the inability to safely transport more than 2 people isn't a deal breaker, the Axion can serve as a second vehicle--far more than any other RV out there. Can't park it in a parking garage (99% of the time), but it can park in a normal urban parallel parking space, gets good enough gas mileage to be used as a daily driver if need be, can be used to shlepp stuff from Home Depot etc. We miss our Eurovan for what it could do that the Axion can't, but we're happy with our choice--and wouldn't have gotten the Tofino instead even if it were out there when we got our Axion. However, if you absolutely must have more seltbelted positions, the Axion is out.

Remember this is a macerating toilet so it's not just a gravity dump. And flushing the system with water poured down the toilet is exactly what we do. The simple truth is that building a full RV under 18 ft. long is impossible without a bunch of compromises. Sure, separate black and gray water tanks are great. But there is no RV with this that's this short. If you really want the short length, a combo tank is part of the price. Along with not having a spare tire under the van. And not having more than 2 seatbelted positions. On the other hand, 20 ft. long Class Bs with all those good things are 2 ft. longer than our Axion, which means that in our particular circumstance we coldn't have bought it, due to parking limitations in the condo we live in. Also if you want to be able to park easily...and to have an RV that's doesn't look like an RV. You pays your money and you makes your choices.

There's no practical way around it. The only real solution is either a longer RV or a same-size van camper without a bathroom. Another great review Neil. Seems to me the front passenger seat can become a good place to relax in this van....when swiveled around it faces the tv and the entire interior. But, does it have any recline adjustments? It might be nice to see you check out the comfort, the adjustability, and the overall usability of the swiveled passenger seat in all your future reviews, but for now please comment on this one. Also, you showed the sofa dimensions as 24”x72”. If used as a bed without using the width extension board, 24” seems extremely narrow, but I’m wondering if that 24” width is with or without the back cushion in place. You demonstrated yourself laying on your back, straight as a board, and I noticed the rear cushion was in place... but no one typically sleeps in that position for an entire night. Rolling onto your side during the night , which is a common and natural movement during sleep, might actually risk rolling right off the edge, so that’s why I’m wondering if that 24” width you showed is with or without the removal of the sofa’s rear cushion. If it is with the cushion in place, then I’d ask what is the width with the cushion removed? Also, seeing the bathroom mirror poorly installed with only strips of tape certainly raises doubts and concerns about the overall quality of construction of the entire van, even though they responded to you that they’re going to add some clips in the future. In addition, can anyone explain why Ram would exclude tilt steering in any modern vehicle in this century? Seems like all their other Promaster models suffer similarly. Go figure. So, there’s a single U.S. dealer (I believe in Florida perhaps) claiming that they exclusively install Voltstart on this model. I don’t understand why it’s only that dealer. And lastly, the exclusion of any type of screens for the doors is ridiculous. I realize that the objective is to just stay with essentials, but that certainly seems like one to me, and it’s not even an option. Fortunately, there are sometimes third-party aftermarket solutions. Overall, I love the efficient floorplan of this van. But, the great concept of this van seems possibly overshadowed by too many quality shortcuts and cutbacks. It’s a shame to see the Hymer group shoot themselves in the foot like that, when the “idea” is so great, only to be sabotaged by poor execution. Anyway, look forward to hearing your answers to those questions, and thanks again!

Neil thank you for another great review! For a single traveler this seems like a great option. My questions are: is the TV on an articulating arm or is it locked into that unfortunate position and does the shower / bathroom sink fixture have a shut off switch to conserve water while showering? Love the lithium upgrade for a reasonable price considering what others are asking. Thank you again for all of the info you provide!

Hi Neil, I've been watching you for a while, but this is my first comment. First, I think the layout of this van is near perfect for a solo traveler. I, like you, am a quality person. I think the lack of positive locking cabinets etc. would eventually require fixing and upgrading. I'm not sure if you noticed this or not, but what is the locking situation on the fridge. I also like the way it is placed, but having the fridge door facing forward without a very good locking system is a recipe for the great apple roll. I also had a question about the bed length. You said the bed was 72" and you are 5'10". Seeing you laying on the couch/bed with shoes on seems to show more than 2" of extra length. I am wondering if you measured the bed or got that measurement from literature. Thanks, Chris
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't measure the bed. using the measurements from their site.

I own one and I'm 6'1" and change. I can sleep on the bed OK. I could use longer, but it's acceptable as it. My wife sleeps near the wall and I sleep near the stove so I can hang over if necessary. Carado is as we speak installing magnetic latches on the drawers at their expense. We'll see if that works. Otherwise it's back to bungees. The fridge has a locking latch--no p;roblem there.

There is a spring loaded pin on the refrigerator door that engages when you close the door. I have about 10k miles on mine, with a couple of panic stops, no issues with the fridge door.

Simple mistakes like the cabinets clashing with the floor and no positive latching for some of the cabinets makes we think there must be other blunders in this model. Really, how much more would it cost to make all the cabinet positive locking? How much more would it cost to have the floor covering in a tile or pebble pattern? Scratching my head>>>.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 жыл бұрын
no much but the accountants track every dime spent. multiple that dime for each positive latch times the number of units sold times the number of years and it all adds up I suppose.
@punktexas
@punktexas 6 жыл бұрын
@@Ultramobility People only buy one unit so that argument is invalid. The total cost of a handful of positive locking latches and a floor covering with a complementary pattern is miniscule. It's just a drop in a drop of the $80k bucket. Thanks for the reply. BTW I do love your videos.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 жыл бұрын
punktexas - well the point i'm trying to make is that some manufacturers are penny wise and pound foolish. they don't pass the cost onto the buyer. they want to keep the price as low as possible. to install some positive locking latches is more than just the cost of the latches themselves - they have to also install a piece on the cabinet to receive the positive latch and that takes additional time and training for someone. I know it sounds strange but I've heard manufacturers tell me this. when you add it all up it may come out to a hundred bucks per unit in additional parts and labor and when they add that up over thousands of units the accounts see hundreds of thousands of dollars saved by not doing it. like I said short sighted but it happens all the time. happens less on higher priced rigs though.
@phthisics
@phthisics 6 жыл бұрын
@@Ultramobility What's ironic is that they've had to add a latch to the side of the drawers, which doesn't work, and now they're having to replace those with magnetic latches for customers who complain, and pretty much all the Axion/Banff owners on the Facebook forum complain about this. So I'm guessing the ultimate cost will be a lot more than if they'd installed positive latches in the first place. Another applicable saying is "Stepping over dollars to pick up dimes."

The Tofino and Envy are camper vans, while the Axion is an RV. So they're not directly comparable. If you don't want a full bathroom, you don't want the Axion--it gives up a lot of storage for that feature.

The water tank is in the panel behind the driver's seat, so that's probably not doable. Though I'm 6'1" and I fit OK. For the bed we always sleep with our heads toward the nose of the van, and the outer half of the bed is over the aisle in back, leaving room to dangle or to put some kind of ottoman there.

I know I would rather have a composting toilet than a cassette toilet they use in the Aktiv, Hymer should have as an option on that model. This is a very interesting RV and you did a great job in showing the features! I do not know much about the Pro Master chassis. Are they front wheel drive with an automatic transmission? Also, how many speeds for the transmission and what is the expected fuel mileage and does it use regular octane (87) fuel? It is amazing how many features it has for such a small size. My biggest concern is the small tank sizes and combining the gray and black in one tank. I really like how non descript it looks from the outside to non RV folks. It looks to be a great choice for exploring urban areas. Thanks.
