Thank you for the great review. It angers me to no end when a manufacturer knows there is a flaw in a design (no bathroom ventilation) and fails to address it. 5+ people in the new touring van (proud owner) for a night on the town. The one who ordered the spicy bean burrito (with extra beans) and three beers decides he needs an unplanned emergency trip to the bathroom (in transit) on the return ride home. No matter how you see it, either it will be an embarrassing moment or a quasi hazmat situation. No thanks Hymer

Thanks much for the human model shots. It really helps to get a feel for the various spaces. I never realized 6'2" was considered a giant by RV standards until I stepped into a couple of class B van bathrooms. Also huge difference between a 74" bed and a 70" bed for many of us. Love the Loft but they really need to have some form of power ventilation, looks like room on the rear roof section in this 2.0 length.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
I noticed the extra space on the rear roof as well. don't know why they haven't utilized it for some sort of ventilation...
@colormedubious47476 жыл бұрын
Two major issues with the loft: 1) There are a few campgrounds in popular parks that do not allow soft-sided RVs (such as Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone) and 2) heating and cooling will suffer throughout the motor home with the loft deployed. I'd also be concerned with the long-term durability of the fabric; you cannot stow it unless it's dry or you'll get mold and rot. Other than all of that, it's fine for a family of midgets.
@Riker-eq2yv6 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know that some campgrounds didn’t allow soft sided RV’s so I’m glad you posted that detail. And far as a family of midgets,, that was funny

The added weight of the loft also leaves little room for cargo. Makes the added space moot.

Wow, this is a much nicer version of the Volkswagen Campmobile. I can totally envision families of 4-5 buying or renting the 2.0 loft edition. When I was growing up in northern CA in the 70's, we had the Campmobile with the pop-up. Mom & Dad slept in back. My older brother slept in the pop-up. (lucky him) I was in the cot across the driver and front passenger seats and my younger brother slept in the galley. I'm sure our fridge was smaller in volume than the Aktiv's and I'm certain we had no microwave. This is such an upgrade! Personally, for the solo RV'ing I'm likely to do, the 1.0 seems a better fit.

I am going to pick up my Hymer 2.0 with Murphy bed tomorrow. I was finally able to get rid of my Thor Axis by traded it in at Hershey RV show last week with a fair deal. At the show, I had to ask a Pleasure-Way Rep for direction to Hymer shop, and he was not thrilled. He told me once I saw Hymer's quality, I will come back to them. I never did. It is the simple, functional, and clean design and advanced features that attracted me to Hymer. I do, however, agree with him that Hymer does use cheapper materials here and there. But Having travel 12000 miles in the past 18 months for 2 cross country trips in a poorly built RV, and worried about something might fail every other day, at least I am experienced enough to tell that the Hymer construct seems sturdy. On day 3 of my last trip, the toilet flush paddle popped, and I had to kneel on the floor and use my hand to operate the toilet for the remaining 5000+ miles of my journey. I am sure Hymer will show Its imperfections in my future trips. But with 6-year warranty, I don't really care.

Hymer could have easily put fantastic fan at the back of the coach above sofa. They chose not to. They have not a single fan in the Loft edition - NONE! Their idea of ventilation is running underfloor AC in fan mode. The problem is that there is single small vent for that AC and it’s located at the bottom of the front bench 2” above the floor. So you have restricted air circulation with very little volume of fresh air being pumped into the coach. And when you want to run AC to cool it, cold air does not mix up with hot air at the top, so only your floor is being cooled. Until Hymer chooses to fix air circulation in Loft, it’s not even a shortlist - it’s a strong NOT RECOMMENDED. They need to add additional air vents for AC at the head level - that would require running air hoses inside the cabinetry and potentially additional fan to assist AC pushing the air at this height. They also need either to replace sunroof with fan or put fantastic fan at the rear of the coach. The Aktiv Loft is a fantastic coach, but we need to wait for the second iteration before recommending it to the public.

Another home run! I've been waiting for a more thorough and "real lfe" review of the Loft Edition and, as always, you've delivered. The lack of some sort of ventilation in the bathroom is odd, to say the least, as it not only would be useful for obvious reasons but additionally to help vent cooking fumes as the Aktiv doesn't come with a range hood. I also wish the side windows in the rear were larger, but with the rear screen at least some ventilation could be had (weather-permitting). In any case, I love what Hymer has done and the Loft Addition is highly appealing. Thanks again for providing us with such a solid review.

Hi Neil, Great review. Maybe I missed it, but I did not hear anything about the missing solar panels. I was told that because of the weight limitations due to the fiberglass top that they could not be added. That's a big problem. Can you confirm this? I think if they really want this to work they need to put this on the Stronger Mercedes chassis that has the dual wheels. Yes, it would be longer. But they then they could add stronger struts and add the needed solar pannels. let's discuss the disadvantages of a Pop Top model. 1st Rain/mold: Yes, it will repel water but if the rain is heavy it will enter your rig. If not air dried long enough you will get mold (ask tent trailer owners). 2nd privacy: light shadows or noise. If you have ever stayed in a tent you know what I'm talking about. 3rd Stealth: The biggest reason why people go to a Class B is that they can camp anywhere. Use the Pop Top feature and you lose that option. 4th limited or no room for solar pannels: Hymer's big plus was to have enough solar to "assist" in powering the air conditioner. Not only does the Pop Top take that away it now takes longer to cool and heat the unit (again ask anyone with a tent trailer).
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
hi greg. I cut out the talk about the solar panels and instead just put in graphics that say that there is an option 250w of solar on a portable panel. not sure why hymer couldn't mount the solar on the rear part of the van where there is no loft. probably weight related.

Great video! I like the showing sizes of things, it really helps! As a single rider, I don't have much use for this Aktiv version but I can see families and groups might really like it! I would be more than a little concerned about the lack of a vent fan in the bathroom for the obvious reasons... After renting an Aktiv I've actually gotten over my dislike of the cassette toilet and some of the reason was what you mentioned about being able to rotate it. That makes for more standing room when needed! Again, great video and I really like the new format!

Just curious....

Great review. I would rather they had cut off roof entirely and put on a fiberglass cap which allowed for the bed to come down on gas struts instead of a roof top tent. The fiberglass top would provide greater height inside the van as well. I also can't wait for the new European bed flare "slide outs" that I'm beginning to see that allow those over 6' to comfortably sleep East/West. If I wanted a roof top penthouse tent I would get a Sportsmobile, at least with SM I can get that in any of the major three van brands and in 4x4, albeit for way over the Aktiv's price point.

Neil, as you channel grows, the RV companies will come calling. I'm also a passionate photographer, and I have seen the photography channels become distorted with companies flying the channeled photographers to exotic places to review their new equipment. While the photographers, say they are unbiased, I can't help but think that their credibility is compromised. While I don't think the RV industry is as sophisticated with their marketing as the Japanese photography companies, I do think you will be faced with some decisions down the road. You need to go to the RV shows, and with your channel, get access to their products. It will be interesting to see how you develop your channel as it gets larger!

Instead of a door on the bathroom what if it had a curtain on tracks that extends into the walk way some to give more room. I have seen it on other vans, the shower pan is removable and stores in the shower when not used. Saves weight from the door being gone too.. Also I forget if this has a sink or not, but it could be a fold down sink to save space. Not sure why there has to be a cassette toilet in this day and age.

Good, but incomplete review on key features in the Hymer 2.0 Loft. It would be very helpful if you would update your review to correct your admission about having to lift the loft (rather than simply using the built-in lifts) and to include BOTH the pros and cons of the undermount AC. The undermount AC is a bit unique and worth some commentary. The pros are noteworthy to me: quieter operation while inside the coach, no large AC box on the roof (which is essential for the loft function), and lower overall height. Keep up the good work!

Hi Neil- we love your channel-thanks for the realistic demo today.I wonder what the incidence of leaks developing over time Is historically with Pop-Top camper vans. Does the sky light also House the Fantastic Fan, and does that operate with a remote? Other thoughts unrelated to video. You asked during a live stream show what we think of your 360 videos. I had no clue how Much effort 360 videos take to create. I find if given a choice, I always watch the regular format rather than 360. Somehow ,I find theses hard To view. To my mind things look a little distorted, and I am aware this type of filming makes me a little nauseous! I am sure I am the exception ,but you asked for feedback. I am surprised to find I enjoy the use of the drone in your videos, you do try to change things up and I appreciate that. Ideas for future videos- and direct me to what to watch if you have already been there and done that. Van maintenance , what, when, the hidden costs of ownership and how difficult it is to find service. What differences In Maintenance costs are there between the Dodge Promaster chaises and the Mercedes. How about Tips and tricks for parking in urban areas for class B vans-I did watch the video where you parallel parked your Ascent, how hard is that with your Roadtrek?. Perhaps others would share on a livestream chat their stories of traveling and parking their rigs in the urban jungle. When you start using the vehicle as a people mover, as you pointed out this Roadtrek has the potential for- how do you find parking when you get to that urban event ? Do the 144/ 170 class B vans fit in parking garages? Do garages charge more if they fit? You do a great job, seems there is so much to learn about class B vans! Finally, we went to the Hersey RV show and walked through an Airstream Interstate 19. Would love to see you compare this to the Pleasure way Ascent as soon as you can find a”19” available for walk through. Thanks for sticking to class B Vans, you are doing a great job!
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth thank you so much. 1) we'll have to see if leaks develop over time or not. 2) there is no powered rooftop ventilation anywhere in the van including the skylight. regarding parking - it was one of the main reasons why I downsized from my 23 foot roadtrek to my 19 foot ascent. parking was a lot more challenging with the longer roadtrek. now, I parallel park with ease mainly because I use my ascent as a daily driver and have gotten used to it. it is much easier to find marking for my shorter ascent. I could not fit my longer roadtrek into standard street parking without taking up two spaces nor could I fit into a crowded parking lot.

Your reasonable criticisms of the cassette toilet rarely mention any possible benefits. To be fair to Hymer, to the Europeans who seem okay with it (and to your readers)--how about including some benefits? Apart from the obvious but manageable unpleasantry, and the very limited capacity, how about these as mentionable benefits: The removable cassette gives more dumping locations, it allows for disassembly in the event you need to investigate for odor problems/clogs and really clean if needed (anyone ever try that on a blank tank?), and the ability to double your capacity by carrying a spare cassette. Is there space under the coach whereby one might fabricate a custom storage location to strap a spare cassette? The portability of a cassette allows for this kind of adaptability.

A couple notes from an actual owner: - The loft opens on it's own with only a slight push. It opens and closes easier if any doors or windows are open, but you don't need to walk it up the ladder like shown in this video. Just a slight push and off it goes thanks to the struts. I am 6'0" - The bed is moderately comfortable, but more comfortable than I thought. - No coverage of the A/C, in the south, the bottom A/C is totally insufficient for use in the daytime. It's really bad. - No ventilation does indeed suck. - The seating for me is just fine driving for 10+ hours. You can recline just fine in mine and it's plush enough to be comfortable over long drives. - The OCC includes full tanks and 4 or 5 adults (I forget which). According to Hymer. - The jump seat in the loft is the same as the 2.0. - I had no problem taking as shower upright and I'm 6 foot tall. I would also wait until the second iteration of this. However, as an owner that's lived in it, some of the things I found here could use some clarification. -

Also most people aren't going to be worried about the kids or grandkids that's why they bought this was to get away from them if they wanted to be with the kids or grandkids they would have stayed home. A couple questions I have on this one: Is there any provision for solar, and what is the OCCC? Actually I think it would be good to include the OCCC in all your reviews. Showing how that top goes up was very helpful to understand this one better. I would not want the couch bed but I can see where it would work well for a family with several children. Thanks again for your reviews!

Hopefully this (and similar models like the Winnebago Solis) sells like hotcakes so that more manufacturers start putting in pop top roofs in their sprint class B vans so you can finally get sleeping for four in an Airstream interstate or similar. Time for them to wake up and realize that families want RVs too now, not just boomers, and that means they need sleeping for four.

Ultramobility I had a lot of great camping experiences with my Westy. It was pleasant to drive, only 16 feet long and easy to maneuver, but underpowered, and only got about 14 mpg. I was young and coming from tent camping, so I thought at the time the camping experience was great. In retrospect, it was pretty basic. There was no hot water, only one interior light, a tiny absorption refrigerator that, because of the confined installation, never worked right, and only a portapotti. (No grey or black water tanks; a bucket was supposed to be used to collect the grey water.) You had to be athletic and strong to raise the roof and to climb to to the upper bunk. The “mattress” up there was only two inches of light weight foam. At night it was dark and cold up there, but, there was lots of ventilation. It could get very warm in the daytime because the fiberglass roof had no insulation. The “downstairs” bed was thicker, but much smaller. Many parks in bear areas treated it like a tent trailer and prohibited inside food storage. The quality of the workmanship in the conversion, done by Westfalia in Germany, was fantastic and would put most current day domestic RVs to shame. I would caution anyone considering the Hymer to carefully access their own physicality and temperature tolerance before buying one.

As a current '97 Eurovan T4 owner who's been watching LOTS of videos as I try to figure out which of the MANY Class B options would suit us, I have to say the pop-up on this is a real turn-off for me. I was thinking before I watched the video that it was going to offer some version of a lofted ceiling as it does in the Eurovan (when the bed is slid towards the back), but that little hatch in the ceiling to access the loft befuddles me. I've asked many a time how easily some senior traveler could get my top up that also raises on gas struts - this one is even more difficult with the ladder shuffle technique that you demonstrated and is an accident waiting to happen, in my opinion! The addition of even this poorly designed bathroom is a step up over the Eurovan, but what appeared to be a lack of an AC that I'm missing on my Eurovan is a minus. The concerns below about mold and rot are pretty unfounded - if I put it down after getting rained on, it dries fine and I've not had any issues. In the end, I'm 6' tall and this camper is a non-starter for me from both driving and sleeping perspectives. The search continues! :)
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
I made a mistake on raising the loft - it is on gas struts. the dealer failed to mention how to operate it and so I "walked it up" which isn't necessary.
@boorayin27736 жыл бұрын
So how was it meant to be raised, curiously? And I didn't even write about how to get it down once you get it up there - some sort of hang on and jump off the ladder technique? I kinda hate how little space is up top on my camper, this one at least has more room - but that little hatch really bothers me regardless. It's kinda like bunking in a submarine (which I've done).

I’m so torn, because I love the loft bed, but there are some serious drawbacks to this RV. Bathroom vent: I wonder if they could put a small vent with a fan on the side of the RV. Maybe where that cubby is to the left of the medicine cabinet mirror. And why wouldn’t they replace the skylight with a Fantastic or Maxx Air Fan? Under mount A/C: I’ve read these aren’t very good. Hopefully, I read incorrectly or technology has improved. Small refrigerator: Maybe they could decrease the width of the drawers to the left of the fridge and put in refrigerator/freezer drawers. I actually wish RV companies would start offering drawer style fridges. Solar: I like using the car’s engine as a generator (maybe Hymer should look into upgrading the alternator like in the Travato with lithium), but I still want solar, and a portable solar panel just isn’t enough. Do you know if it’s possible to put a flex solar panel on the loft roof? Layout: I could totally go for this layout even though I generally prefer a more open layout with fixed beds. I generally don’t like back lounge couch/beds, but with the loft bed, you don’t (assuming you’re traveling w/o kids) have to make up a bed every night. And sleeping in the loft bed looks so nice. It’s like upgraded tent camping. The only change I would make is adding some lighting and usb outlets. It’s just a shame that the beds are all so short. Unless I’m mistaken, the longest bed is 71” long. I wonder if Hymer could put in flares like in the Revel. Thanks for another great review!
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
PlaneJaned, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I would think that there's enough room for flex solar panels on the roof in the rear.

I thinking of buying one of these few remaining units since the plant shut down... Have you heard any feedback about the roofs? do they leak? is that a concern in heavy rain? problems with mildew? Thanks ultramobility!
@guoseph6 жыл бұрын
I may have missed it but how do you get AC in the coach part without a rooftop unit? I like the amount of seating/sleeping spaces they have managed to squeeze into this van. Can you comment on the actual comfort of the rear couch (similar to your own RV) while driving down the road? From my experience any seats behind the rear axle in a full size van can be quite bouncy and uncomfortable while underway. Really enjoy your detailed reviews, keep up the good work.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
hi alex - the AC is mounted under the RV. there's some debate as to how efficient under mounted AC units are so I'll have to look into that. The rear couch is definitely not as comfortable to sit on and ride on in the Aktiv as compared to the Ascent.
@MyChannel-vm6dw6 жыл бұрын
Neil another crazy good video from you excellent I'm actively looking for something just like this the deal-breaker for me is the cassette toilet though. Is there anything else that comes close I'm looking for something I can just take for the day with one overnight with a group of six. Also is there any dedicated storage for the ladder and the optional bed when you're fully stocked with 6 people?
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
hi there! thanks! you may want to try out the cassette toilet. honestly some black tanks like mine in my ascent are only a little over twice the tank size so you're going to have to look for a dump station if you have more than a couple people using it. at least with the cassette you can dump at more places. regarding the ladder it stows in the open space above the cab. the mattress for the front bed doesn't stow any place convenient in the sofa bed configuration. in the rear flip down bed layout you could stow the front mattress back there.

Great review! We went to a show in Atlanta on 9-15-18 and viewed the Activ 2.0 and Travato 59k. The rear bed is a bit short in the Activ. I'll need to sleep at an angle (I'm 6'2"). @@gosman949 Thor acquired the complete Erwin Hymer Group, including their European, Asian and North American operations (Hymer, Roadtrek, Carado, Sunlight). The deal gives Thor a much stronger presence in Europe and Asia. I'm new to RV'ing so am only aware of Thor's reputation for poor product quality by reputation. That said, Hymer appears to have a well-established reputation in Europe as a quality manufacturer. Something's gotta give and hopefully it's Thor making an active effort the preserve the Hymer reputation. I'm with Neil in thinking there may be at least some degree of product consolidation in the North American market.

Okay, can someone break down power systems a little more indepth. Im trying to compare the hymers battery with something like the travato. The travato has a 48 volt battery with 8700 watts of lithium on board, and underhood generator that recharges the system in an hour and a half. The Hymer has two 6 volt AGM batteries with option of Lithium 400 upgrade (is that the watt size? i couldn't find any more info on hymers website). If so i believe you'd be running the underhood generator constantly on the hymer. And with no solar panels on the loft (im pretty sure), this would be way behind the travato in terms of power. And one would have to keep their hymer engine running all night to get A/C. This is impractical to me. As is the ductless loft, pressure cooker any one? I dont know how you would control humidity without having a fantastic fan, little cross breeze unlikely, so youd have to run a dehumidifier on power, which this system would struggle with. Electronics without the power to run them don't provide any purpose to the consumer. For this reason, I'm skeptical of the hymer and its battery capabilities.
@Ultramobility6 жыл бұрын
I believe you can upgrade the Aktiv to 1600 amp hours of lithium which would make it a larger battery bank than on the Travato. Watt hours is simply calculated as volts times amps so 400 amp hours times 13.6 volts = 5,440 watt hours. i'm not sure how the Aktiv's bms works but if it allows you to boast the battery voltage to say 14.3 volts like my pleasureway does then you could store 14.3 * 400 ah = 5720 watt hours. If you upgrade to the 1600 amp hours you have 21,760 watt hours of power which would allow youto run your ac most of the night without needing to start the engine.
