What baffles me is how no other game to date, including Codemasters', copied Grid's progression, you access the content on a nice pace (with some degree of liberty) and can see real progress being made on your racing career. It's just perfect!
@TurbobuttesАй бұрын
Weird, because that's what I perceive as one of Grid's greatest weakness. You progress and unlock things too slowly and you never know how far you're even into the game. If I recall correctly I played it for a good ten hours, I think I was still on my second car and I had no idea whether I was 10%, 20% or 50% done with the game. It just started to feel neverending and at that point I threw the towel.

One of the most memorable aspects of Grid is the AI drivers: many of them are real life racers, and from my experience after several playthroughs, some of them have their own characteristics. Pedro Lamy is the second fastest driver at Le Mans but will not hesitate to PIT manoeuvre you whenever you're at his proximity, while Tom Kristensen is like a squeaky clean version of Ravenwest guys. Shinji Nakano is a speeding bullet that will warp past you on straights but will fold once he sees a corner sharper than 45° (pretty much in line with how he drove in F1 keklmao) Also the fact that it features a damage model that RIVALS Burnout and Flatout series WHILE featuring real licensed cars will never cease to amaze me. Probably the reason why today's damage physics is nerfed so much.

Max Verstappen's dad Jos Verstappen shows up in Le Mans. F1 host and former F1 champion Jenson Button also shows up in Le Mans. In Dirt 2 you can be "friends" with current FIA president Muhammed Ben Suliyam, which I of course find hilarious now in 2024.

The real driver angle is because this is kind of an official game for the 2006 Le Mans Series season. Most of the real life tracks in the game were part of the actual schedule, and it also includes the drivers and cars (some of the more obscure prototypes being pretty rare in other games).
@F0X_H0UNDАй бұрын
Besides the actual racing, I mostly miss the team management aspect to Grid. In the menu's I felt like the team manager and in the actual races, I felt like the driver. In the beginning, you basically raced for other teams and eventually saving enough cash to start your own. Hiring and firing drivers, designing the liveries, choosing what sponsors to plaster on said livery and the gradual expansion of your paddock was so awesome to see.

The ai, the team setting, the career and it's diversity, the drifting felt amazing, hell they even had a derby mode which I can't tell you how many fond memories I have going to head to head with friends. Oh and let's not forget the amazing damage they had in the game. I still have my 360 along with Grid. Think I might revisit it now! Why cant we have this passion in games anymore?

There’s another thing you should have mentioned that NO OTHER GAMES DARE TO TACKLE. Driver errors. Basically an RnG mechanic where some of the Ai can and will make a mistake causing either a spin out or a write off and of course your race engineer will call out the one who did it, and to make it even more unique, Ravenwest are the only drivers that are not coded to make mistakes to further emphasise their driving capabilities as the best of the best, also another mid game occurrence that is so rare that you’re better off finding a skinwalker AND a CCXR trevita COMBINED, some of the racers ahead of you will have TIRE BLOWOUTS causing them to either spin out, slow down dramatically or even crazier perform the Flying Mercedes( if you know you know)I’ve only seen these blowouts happen THRICE within my entire 8 YEARS of playing this game. So yes Grid is the only game that I’ve played that showcased the brutality of racing and reminding us that this is no gentlemen sport, hell it’s unfathomable that this game forces me to lock in on EVERY. SINGLE. RACE( except for drift) Not even rocket league or any online competitive esports game had me sweating like Grid did. Edit: this is the longest I’ve written and I didn’t even notice it, I have such a passion for this game that I wrote an essay on it

@@MiguelBaptista1981Fr. grid 1 handling have so much personality that are unlike any other racing game. No idea why you mentioned TDU, the series doesn't really have that great of a handling physics to be frank.
@Sync458324 күн бұрын
@@shira_yone I tried it. It has no personality whatsoever. It has no challenge or satisfaction when feeling the car you’re driving, it feels more like a driving simulator than a simcade game. Also comparing dirt 2 to grid is irrelevant since one is about rally (even dirt 2 have flaws). And driveclub and project gotham racing is not even close to grid 1 in handling when it comes to fun and feel for the car. Both felt bland where there was nothing new, it’s like playing the same game. Tdu 2 handling may have sucked but Tdu 1 was great. They are all great games regardless, id argue project gotham racing had the better career mode. I think race driver grid had the most personality and better feel for the car others didnt have.
@shira_yone22 күн бұрын
@@Sync4583 yeah, maybe try it a lot more driving the variety of cars available in Autosport; the vintage cars especially are really satisfying to drive. Also how come a game that's supposedly less simcade is less challenging to you? I don't get the logic there. Truly I don't hold Grid 1 handling in high regard because it is so ass with the assists off; Driveclub on hardcore handling, PGR and Autosport with assists off are the creme de la creme for simcade handling. Hell, Wreckfest (on tarmac) have nicer simcade handling than Grid 1.

While I agree on most points with you, I actually think that disabling the driving assists improved the game for me, and that was most noticeable on the Drift events. As you said, they're extremely easy - howeverr disable the assists and you have to micromanage your inputs as to not spin out or smash into the nearest wall.(At least if my memory is not failing me, last played the game around 5 years ago, 3rd or 4th playthrough since release). Worked best for me, this old game can be hard to get going on modern windows and not all version come with this good exe. The point about TCS and Stability assist seem on point. My ego refuses me to enable any assists, wanting to just 'git gud'. But unlike the Forza Horizon games for an example, I just simply suck at GRID 1 with assists off. The cars seem highly unpredictable if you drive them hard. Even with smooth inputs, you don't ever feel very confident taking corners, let alone if you're trying to do a successful divebomb. I can't even shift gears manually without somehow straining the engine by the final lap, haha The delicate physicality of automobiles is on full display. So when you mention the game acknowledging that motorsport is inevitably a contact sport at times, that really spoke to my experience of how thin the line is between race ending crash and podium finish. And so this game sees itself uninstalled and reinstalled every once in a while. I love the thrill of winning or even at least meeting sponsor requirements. But maybe next time I'll go with assists on and actually enjoy the game. Great video!

I just "beat" this game yesterday after having owned it for years now. It was an amazing drive, let me tell ya. My favorite aspect is that it's one of the few game series with rigidbody physics + modular chipping based damage model with licensed cars. The only thing that gets on my nerves is that high downforce & power cars have incredibly overpowered brakes, and you better believe the NPC cars WILL take advantage of that. From our perspective it almost looks like they just rocket around corners like if inertia was suddenly tossed out the window for them. Luckily there is always a chance the AI will make a mistake and spin out or crash. That is something I've only seen consistently happen across Codemasters games.
@SetsunaTheFandomАй бұрын
Thinking of Race Driver GRID will always remind me that they have licenses to both Le Mans Series (now known as European Le Mans Series) and 24 Hours of Le Mans for that time, perhaps not all entries from the series/race but the "key" entries. It's probably the only game where you can win as a JLOC Lamborghini, well-known for blowing up after just 2 laps of running La Sarthe. Speaking of that, a Q&A question from me: Which inclusion of a particular racing series/a particular season of a racing series (or more) on a racing game that interests you? Whether they're in their own dedicated game (i.e., GTR2, Test Drive Le Mans, LM Ultimate) or included in a racing game as an addition (i.e., Race Driver GRID with LMS/Le Mans content) Btw congrats on the 40k sub!

As someone who put in thousands of hours in multiplayer purely with keyboard playing Grid I will say this. This game has the best arcade physics out of any racing game ever made. With assists on you could beat 99.99% of the multiplayer playerbase with keyboard on almost all cars, which is unheard of in a game such as this. Made it extremely enjoyable since it was a game that finally enabled competing at tracks that were usually reserved with sim games possible for kb users. Demolition derby online was also surprisingly varied and fun. Some drivers tried to only stop others from finishing, some tried to play normally, some started crashing others only after falling behind, some just rode backwards and what player did what changed how they felt at the time lol. The mode also gave a feeling that the game had a small durability bug, but I have no factual evidence to support it. Peak of racing games for keyboard players.

This was the best game I installed when I got my Steam Deck more than one year ago. I still have it there, never uninstalled it and still play it occasionally. It's just one of the best "sim-cades" games ever made.

GRID was totally my favourite game in the series! Till this day, the feeling is unmatched! I own all the other games in the series, but none matched with this one!

As a big D1 Grand Prix fan, the fact that this game actually had some of the D1GP cars and drivers made me surprise. The game itself was also a lot of fun experience.

Some D1GP drivers in this game still race to this day, like Takahiro Ueno & Seimi Tanaka. Masao Suenaga recently retired this year when he announced it at Tokyo Auto Salon 2024.

@@KevinAbillGaming Isn't it Kazuhiro Tanaka(former Yuke's Team ORANGE) who appeared in this game? Seimi Tanaka debuted D1GP in 2012.

Not sure if you're able to get it as it's no longer availabile on the store but i believe Driveclub was CRIMINALLY critiqued and underrated, slated and assassinated. Later praised, mourned and cherished for a short few weeks upon announcement of it's shutdown by the same jounralist pages that ripped it apart. In my opinion, a sad and tragic example of the negative effects of gaming media on a brilliant game. Just subscribed, grid 2007 is one of my all time favourite racing games, I went as far as to buy keys to play it on steam as it was no longer availabile years later. Your videos are seriously well put together and incredibly well punctuated. Particularly liked your NFs shift and TDU videos too. We seem to share almost identical opinions on the lost gems. Keep it up mate, glad to see good and passionate content!

what i really like about this game's team aspect is the fact that ai teammates have actual characters and basically it can affect how you immerse into your career. story of mine is about a halfway into career i hired Tom Rockford as my teammate and basically it was a blast, i really liked his aggressive overtaking making enough gaps for me and his laid back personality too. even with some few dialogues and just the driving itself he really did feel like a teammate until we got into our first Le Mans GTE event, where both of us being in the lead eventually turned into a fiercer battle and around the third from the last corner he lost control and crashed into my car ran out of rewind(i was playing on extreme difficulty), resulting ruining my very first GTE experience in Grid after that i fired him out of spite and basically the rest of the career was one big rivalry war. when Tom was in the grid i focused the utmost of my pressure onto him and he did it back, and it just went on and on till i beat Ravenwest. and i'm still amazed how this whole thing went completely unscripted and unprompted, really turning my career experience in Grid as my OWN career experience. man i love this game

One of my favorite games period, alongside another Codemasters gem..DiRT 2 From the moment i was first introduced to them yeeeeeeears ago to this day, i always find myself returning to both. they're just that good and there's nothing like them nowadays (and i don't think there will ever be)

GRID's race music feels like a combat theme and it's on point with its full contact racing. And also, people often compare this game with Ace Combat with cars because of that. Ian Livingstone just killing it with his music!

i was craaazy about the drift in this game. exactly beacuse the ai just was so easy and the driving was so amazing. kept on pushing higher and higher scores just because it was sooooo good. and i loved the fact that ai would just not bother and not preassure me. i coudl just go and bammm have my fun. until today GRID is one of the top 3 best racing games that i have ever played and when i think i wanna play a good racing game.. this game is always in the back of my mind. i have very fond memories with this game and it will always be in my head and brings me a smile to see this video. so many memories of GRID.

GRID 2 could have been such a slam dunk of a sequel if they’d just stuck to the winning formula. I remember being so unbelievably hyped for it, then I was surprised with a Copy of the game by my parents. I played it and “corner cut, reducing speed” and the massively simplified rewind mechanism disappointed me so much. Even playing GRID 1 on a tiny monitor with no sound whatsoever is infinitely more enjoyable to me, the handling felt right, the damage model was satisfying, I really felt like I could play the game how *I* wanted. I could take risky corners and just use other cars as safety barriers, I could brake check someone trying to pass me and watch as they span out and caused a huge collision. I used to play on the demolition derby track with the looping jump, and I’d set it to 20 laps and wait for the cars to try and jump only to bounce them off my roof and destroy every one of them, then I’d take 20 victory laps past their smoking wrecks.

Toca race driver 4 introduced me to race driving. It was great for its time and it seemed so realistic but also gameplay and car control was very enjoyable. When it comes to handling in Grid, I would compare it to a hybrid made of old nfs and new nfs which is kinda strange. Nfs Pro Street was the only racing game that let me think if I want to approach certain corner faster. The sense of speed in this game was insane.
