I heard this song on the radio in January 1981. I had never heard of them before, but I instantly became a fan.

Great song. Takes me back to my youth and you can bet if this was ever played in public - dances, discos in pubs etc everyone would dramatically join in the chorus. Everyone. 😁

Midge Ure has been in a number of bands, but never in the Human League. He was almost a member of the Sex Pistols. The bands he has been in: Slik, Rich Kids, Ultravox, Visage. He was even a member of Thin Lizzy in a US tour. And, of course, he co-wrote the Band Aid hit "Do they know it's Christmas?". He's also had a very successful solo career. The boy from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, has done well.

I was 16 years old when this song was released as a single and I'd certainly never heard anything like it. The mood it creates, emphasised by the video, is still quite unusual.

First time I encountered Midge Ure was in a 3 piece band from Scotland called Slik. Then he went on to play in the former Sex Pistols bass guitarist, Glen Matlock's band The Rich Kids (Ghosts of Princes in Towers, The Rich Kids). It was after this that he worked with Steve Strange on his Visage project. Did some writing and playing with the band Thin Lizzy and then joined Ultravox. Worked with Bob Geldof on putting the Band Aid/Live Aid charity single/concert together and has a number of solo singles/albums. My personal favourite from his solo work is the album 'Answer to Nothing' featuring the single of the same name, with Mick Karn from Japan on Bass, and also the single 'Dear God'. Kate Bush was also on a track on that album too.

Essential 80s..Everybody has that group…This was my group back in the early 80s this was the song the video that led me to them.. the combination of Billie Currie s classical instruments with unique synths, and midge ures vocals and edgy guitars, and criss cross bass and pulsating synth bass held together with Warren canns drum was musicianship at its best… any track on Vienna any track on rage in Eden ..quartet… lament…. Went back for the John foxx Definitely try those and his solo work and the visage as well …and no, this is not Gary numan, but I love his stuff for different reasons..he’s great too

This song reached number 2 in the UK singles chart, kept off the number 1 slot by a novelty song, I saw Midge Ure live last month, his voice is still amazing and the band had the sound spot on, I’d definitely recommend seeing them, other songs “Dancing With Tears in My Eyes” , “The Voice” , “Hymn” or “Reap the Wild Wind”

When I first read that, I thought you were saying that the novelty song that kept them at number 2 was called "I saw Midge Ure live last month", which would have been hilarious. It is a travesty, however, that this song didn't get to number one.

You want synth ? Try John Foxx - Underpass. The original Ultravox singer… his solo stuff is great. Midge era Ultravox is also amazing.. especially Visions in Blue

This is from the Midge Ure iteration of the band....There is the John Foxx era of the band. Both iterations are GREAT, but each has it's own flavor with and underpinnings that it's Ultravox.

You may as well start doing John Foxx now he was a founding member of ultravox and influenced Numan although Numan then went on to distill the sound. I'll suggest burning car or Europe after the rain for starters 😊 Then open up a new channel just for Numan reviews 😂

He's a crazy Scot (UK specialty) like that Simple Minds guys, projecting his despair on a near-Balcan continental landscape, which is somehow half-Roman, half-Nazi. Like Visage had that French bit. Kraftwerk playing a part. Nothing serious. (And even more pathetic later. Then: Totally lost.)
