Snap focus on the Ricoh is fantastic. I've recently started using the camera almost entirely in snap focus mode. You can quickly jump between 1m, 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m, 5m, ∞ and see the depth of field on the LCD. This achieves the same goal as zone focusing with a manual distance scale, only easier to master. While the camera is on snap focus mode you can also touch the screen to focus on a specific point which overrides the snap distance. I find this setting easier for me after struggling with the "full press snap" as the full press causes me to tilt the camera causing a shake blur and also slightly alter the composition. You can also assign a custom button to switch between snap focus and auto focus. I take my hat of to the product managers and engineers of the GR for crafting such a thoughtful product

I own a Ricoh GR2, Fujifilm X100F and a Leica Q, use them all for street photography. GR2 is fantastic and makes amazing images, discreet package. X100F is great all rounder, absolutely fantastic however, The Q is on a different level, images are absolutely fantastic, it’s like x100f on steroids. Absolutely love the Q it is worth it as a camera, however the GR goes everywhere. Fantastic video, sums up my experience exactly.

@Ian S I am considering to buy the Q2 in these days, but just because I don't find around here an used Q...for what I have heard, from the shop that will sell the Q2 to me too, there is not so much improvement between the two...of course there is something better in the Q2, overall the splash and dust resistant, but if you have already the Q, save some money...or if you find a second hand Q, think about it...
@wearetheunknown81624 жыл бұрын
@Ian S I am happy with my Q for now, Q2 were scarce when I bought mine it was a trade in against a Q2. I was tempted to get a Q2 but I thought actually I can get a good deal on the Q.
@industryrule-40804 жыл бұрын
I own both a GR2 and a Q. Aside from the 28mm FOV and built in lens body, they really don’t have much in common. The images look totally different out of the cameras. GR’s f2.8 looks like the Q’s f4.0. I can’t really say either is a better tool than the other because they’re just different and great for specific uses. As other commenters said, GR is about 85% of the experience of the Q for 15% of the money.
@ALWH13144 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the question is how often a GR users will upgrade when a new version comes out and how frequent Q users upgrade? What is the total ownership cost in long run?
@DeeRosa3 жыл бұрын
As an owner of both that 2.8 looks like an f4 is a total exaggeration on your end without question - 2.8 is still 2.8 but you just don’t understand how to navigate your lenses.
@Old_Man_Bridge2 жыл бұрын
@@DeeRosa you’re actually wrong. F2.8 on APSC is literally F4 on full frame.
@philmtx3fr Жыл бұрын
I am afraid you are right…sorry Deerosa you need to improve your camera knowledge
@philmtx3fr Жыл бұрын
Well about the 15% of the price of the Q, you must consider that with its build quality the Q is an excellent choice on the second market and with the arrival of the Q3 and all the upgrades that it will generate the used Q price will probably go around 1500 2000€ which is far near the price of a new gr3x… so this last one will appear a bit expensive with only f2.8 and no view finder. It’s last advantage (which can be important for some is its size).

When you get used to the GR you don't need to look at the screen to compose when you shoot street. You get used to the coverage of the lens. I shoot the camera while walking and holding it against my chest below my chin. Very stealth.

Great photos. I really like the BNW on the griii. Seems designed for high contrast street photos.
@leslawrenson3 жыл бұрын
The best way to shoot with the GR3 is to learn how to frame your shots without even having to check the screen. After a couple of hundred shots, you pretty much know what you're going to get in the frame without having to look. Also, 28mm is a very forgiving focal length for street photography, and there is enough resolution in the GR3 to crop your image in post. The absolute key thing about the GR3 is that it is designed to give you the confidence to take those shots that you would be too afraid to even attempt with another format. People who downgrade the GR3 do not understand this, and they are most likely not into the type of street photography at which the GR3 absolutely excels.

@sternschnupper8 ай бұрын
great video!! one note about distortion: i used the GR2 a lot, and i think it has very little distortion. and i think what you mean by "it has more distortion" is actually a result of how it is used. since it is so small, and you don't have it on your eye/face, you can, and will move it around a lot more. also for those reasons you will put it closer to peoples faces, quite a bit closer as you would when using a viewfinder, because you, your face, your body can stay away further while having the camera closer with the GR. this results in two things: more interesting framing and photos (remember Capa: "if your photos aren't interesting enough, you aren't close enough"), but also photos at short distance. and photos of people at short distance with a wide angle lens results in (perspective) distortions. now for once if done right those distortions can add to the drama and to the intimacy of the photos. but also the Q would result in exactly the same distortions - when shot at the same distance to the subjects. so it's technically not "the GR" that has more distortions, but the resulting style of shooting that leads to more distortions.

The Leica Q (Q-P / Q2) has tap to Focus & shoot on the LCD screen. You can even sync you Leica to a phone app and use "Tap Focus and shoot" on your phone while you discreetly hang the leica on your neck. As for the battery, you can opt for Panasonic battery as an cheaper alternative (cant remember whats the model is) since Panasonic also manufactured the Leica Q battery too.

These cameras are VERY different from one another and serve different markets and different photography styles. Although the GRIII has a "28mm" lens it's an APS-C camera and therefore you're effectively shooting at 35mm full-frame. The Leica Q has a true 28mm lens. The GRIII would need to have an 18mm to be equivalent to what's on the Leica Q. The field of view for these cameras is different. You'd need to use the crop mode on the Leica Q to be in the same focal space as the GRIII. That said, they're both GREAT cameras for street photography. I even know people using the Leica Q from professional portraiture and wedding photography. Very versatile camera but for me, it's strictly a street shoot. Good video guys.

The reality is that some of us aren't that talented, hence GAS to get the Joy of Photography. Many can go far with experience, such as an old-timer, KZbin creator used a GR I to create works for his exhibition, years back. On the other end of the spectrum is a 21 year girl, who is already shooting for Dior Magazine & VOGUE and having a solo exhibition. "It's not the camera, but who's behind the camera" is just an inspiration and probably meant "artist died poor or unknown". 🙂
