Um, About That NEW Fujifilm X App UPDATE (Part 1)

Күн бұрын

Fujifilm's X-App received an update yesterday that included three new features: 1.) Ability to connect to the X-M5 camera, 2.) Ability to use 4K resolution when shooting in Live View, and 3.) Ability to transfer images via a USB-C cable. There's one little problem: I couldn't figure out how to get it working. But I found a great way to transfer photos and videos from your Fujifilm camera to a smartphone/tablet without needing the Fuji app! NOTE: This is Part 1. Part 2 will be released once info and instructions are released.

Thank you for consistently providing updates on everything fujifilm. I’m a recreational shooter and I don’t have time to keep up to date with everything myself. No drama. If you don’t have the latest iPhone or iPad then just use your good old card reader to lightning adapter, take the SD card out of your camera and plug it into the adapter and import into your my device library just like it always has, for many many years. For me, it’s always been the fastest and least hassle. I don’t like plugging cables into my camera more often than I have to.

Indeed, what a nightmare it was trying to figure out what was going on. I'm glad I'm not the only one, and the truth is that after seeing the advice on how to extract photos without the app, it's what I will use without a doubt, plus it's much faster than via Wi-Fi. Thanks for investing the time in finding out.

Thanks for the video! I've tested out the USB transfer on android (pixel 9 and xt-4) and it works sooooo well. Once the usb symbol appears on the camera, scroll down on the notifications tab, tap on file transfer and it opens Camera Importer in Google photos and transferring raw files takes under a second (after an initial scan). If you only want raw and they are on a separate SD card, you can just remove the jpeg SD card, it will rescan and you just have your raw files there. Honestly, so much less pain than using the Fuji app and waiting an age for transfers! Thanks again, love the channel

Funny today i was in cologne at a camerastore and the man from fuji showed me the same which i did not know before I was so thankful. The fuji app never worked proper and now you did the same. So great. He also showed me the X-M5 that's not gonna be my camera because no viewfinder but even during sunlight i had no problems to work with it but anyhow i need a viewfinder so will go for X-T50 as a backup for my X-T5.

Yup. I have been going the card-swap route for 20+ years now. I understand how some people want to transfer images from the camera to their phones. It's just how their post works. For me, this is a nothingburger even if it worked right. I have played around with the older Fuji app, and honestly it did nothing useful for me. Then I just tried your usb-c cable idea and voilà! My transfers are now 10x bigger and sharp!! This should be the very first suggestion for transferring!!!! Edits even on an iPhone are easy and not overly edited.

Speaking from the Android side of the house, and importantly, drawing a line in the sand of timeline for future viewers, the update claiming these features for the first time was released on Google Play Store on October 4, 2024 at version number 2.2.0(2) which appears to be current as of the release date of this video (October 26, 2024). My Android (on Pixel 8) install is at that level, and, like the IOS variants, has no options to enable USB transfers. I am currently away from my actual camera, but can speak to the app for sure, on that front. My XH-2, at this time, is on firmware version 5.00. So, as many pointed out, an update on at least of of (or more likely both) the firmware and/or app will be required to reveal the new features. Thanks for this video!

I stopped using the app after having to remove the battery 3 or 4 times already, due to stuck standby mode. It doesn't matter if you're shooting video or transferring files, at some point you disconnect and it either turns the camera back on or black screen. The final straw was the day I was holding the devices in two hands while sitting in the car and a notification came up that supposedly they were too far apart and again I had to reset all settings.

my theory is the people who own Fujifilm realize the digital camera market is rapidly contracting so they slashed the R&D budget. I think that's also why Panasonic released the S9 with a 26mmf8. Sales peaked in 2010 and they made a lot of money and it funded a lot of development for a few years but cellphone cameras captured the lions share of the market and that's where the engineering is happening. Meanwhile digital camera makers are just trying to dump inventory with a marketing focused approach

Thanks for your regular support of Fujifilm products, Chris. One of my favorite channels! And, thanks for the workaround for photo transfer. Very useful. I do have a question about editing those files once they’re on my Mac. Sorry if this is off topic and a long hashed over subject, but I recently acquired my first Fujifilm camera, the X100VI, and I’m trying to decide on the best option in RAW editors for it. As such, has that “worm” issue in Lightroom ever truly been fixed and if not what would you recommend as a Raw editor for Fuji in its place? Capture One, DxO PhotoLab/PureRAW, something else? I have ON1 Photo RAW 2025, but it doesn’t seem to be that great at noise removal with RAF files.

Some extra fun facts for those transferring photos from a Fujifilm camera to the Photos app on an iOS/iPadOS or even macOS device: Compressed RAW files act very... weird. I could not properly edit or view them in any version of Apple's Photos app. HEIC compressed images taken from my X-T5 are apparently 10-bit so again (iPhone/iPad apparently shoot and work very well with 8-bit HEIC photos), the Photos app couldn't handle previewing them. Uncompressed RAW files work GREAT and obviously JPEG as well. You can certainly just convert these files using a Mac but that defeats the purpose of transferring them to your Apple mobile device.

I have an X-T2 and simply bought a high-speed card USB reader to import directly from the card to my iPad - it’s very fast for any file type. The cable method is cheaper I guess! This latest app release is just another ongoing issue with Fuji that is rapidly undermining their brand. I’ve been a Fuji man through and through for years and never wobbled until the past few months. Now, instead of being excited to upgrade to their next gen cameras, I find myself doing the sums to switch over to a Pentax Z6/7, even it means ending up with just a few lenses as opposed to the many Fujinon lenses I have right now.😢 Fuji really seem to have lost the plot recently

So far I have used the App to wireless trasfer the jpegs from a X-T5 into a Samsung phone with no problems. I am surprised that Fuji has released an update of the App to include a transfer via a USB cable. I thought that was already possible for any file format (jpeg, raw, ...) with no need of a specific software 😮. In any case, for raw images, an external card reader or a PC card reader, seems to me the best solutions. Definetly it seems that Fuji has major software conception problems these days. Despite the many new product launchs, that is generating a general trust contraction towards the brand. 😢

I would love it - and be very grateful - if someone could explain the following to me. And apologies in advance if I have missed something obvious. Having owned a Fuji X-T5 for the last six months or so, I've finally got around to trying to use the app. It's as user-unfriendly as you suggest Chris. I'm not a tech-expert, but neither am I a complete klutz: the interface lack of information and apparent glitchiness of the FujiX app seem pretty awful to me. Anyway, here's my confusion: I've wanted the ability to do what many friends do when they travel: post and send photos while they're on the road by downloading images from the camera to their phone, iPad or similar device. It took me quite some time to connect the app for this purpose, and even when I had, I wasn't sure it was working. Then I finally made the 'GET' button work, and in the process learned that the app doesn't convert JPGs to RAW file. I shoot RAW, so I concluded you MUST shoot JPGs if you want to post photos on the road. But here's the thing: a friend of mine travels all the time, regularly posts his photos, and he shoots exclusively in RAW. His app allows conversion of the files from RAW to JPG in the download process. But he has a Canon camera, not a Fuji. He expressed surprise when I told him my problem, saying he was sure it must be possible to do what he does with the Fuji. All my reading suggests the contrary, however, i.e., you can't convert RAW to JPG using the FujiX app. If this is true, I'm amazed that a big player like Fuji doesn't do what one of the other big manufacturers (Canon, Sony, Nikon) already do. Then you post this video, Chris, suggesting that it's possible to convert to JPG by, wait for it!: by NOT using the FujiX app, but by using a USB3 cable. Can someone help?! First world problem, I know (but that's why we're all here, no?! 😉). As I said at the outset, anyone who can clear this up for me will earn my undying Aussie gratitude. No, I won't smuggle you a live wombat by courier, but I WILL be grateful!!!

I looked into this a bit by decompiling the Android version of the app. The X App on startup tries to fetch a whitelist of supported cameras that it will allow to connect to via USB. This file at the URL the app tries to access just doesn't exist tho. I probably can't post the URL here in a comment, but it's a JSON file that contains a list of camera models and supported firmware versions. The app ships with a "default" file which only contains a definition for the X-M5 in firmware 1.00. I was able to patch the app to ignore the whitelist and allow any camera. That made a new screen show up showing the connected camera (albeit without model information) and a "Get" button. Clicking that button made me confirm the connection attempt but the app then crashes in the connection routine. I assume my X-T50 really isn't supported or this feature is not ready at all anyway. Either way, just for transferring images, we already got the options mentioned in this video.

BUT _do not enable Bluetooth!_ - the camera: enable Bluetooth (the devices were paired previously) - the tablet: open X-App, it asks me to enable Bluetooth, enable Bluetooth _from this dialog_ The devices gets connected. If my tablet's Bluetooth was enabled previosly - the connection doesn't happen! I hope that Fujifilm will fix this issue. But at least it's a working sequence and I use it.

I have an XT5 I use for photos only. I put the SD card in reader and attach to my IPad mini. I import all images and once import is finished, I sync all images (takes awhile) this will mean I can now view and edit images on my Mac (and iPhone) using external editors and will also copy all to Google Photos for external safe keeping. So this app update would not help me anyway.

I found in past, best functionality works with tablets re tethering

Just saw you found that out lol It's to do with power consumption I think, some mobiles can't cope with the transfer whereas tablets can. It's what I've seen previously anyhow

I am not sure why many of these camera manufactures seem to fail so badly with these software integration apps? I was a Nikon shooter for years (switched to Fuji in 2018) and their apps (both computer and phone/tablet) were horrible for pairing, or connecting with there hardware. And yes I was one of those that bought and still own one of their 360 camera's that never connected well and now is a paperweight. Which is too bad as the hardware took great footage, but the app killed it. Fuji seems to also have similar connection issues with their apps and hardware. If these manufacturers could get a decent development team to build proper tethering apps like Phase One did (initial Capture 1 pro for example) they could bring so much more usability for their hardware for us working pro's. They need to build and test these with real shooting scenarios, like studio and street work where connecting to a tablet/phone/laptop can be so useful for location and studio commercial workflow before release.

I can't even connect my X-H2 (on iPhone 16 pro), tbh. When pairing I just get a message that my camera is not supported and I need to use the old Fuji Cam Remote app instead.

If I set the X-t5 on manual focus and use the app, the app says MF but there is no reaction on changing the focus manually on the lens??

My question is: Who is testing these new features before the app gets published? That's embarrassing. I'm a small software developer and test my app before releasing it. Yes I have to fix some bugs later but promissing features and not delivering them? You mention a manual in PDF. I don't think you should need a manual for this type of software. BTW Thank you so much for your work.

I have used the USB-C transfer method with an iPhone 15 pro and iPad Air (latest gen) on two different trips. On trip 1, worked but incredibly show. Trip 2, did not work at all. Transferred a few images and then locked up. The only method that worked for me was an external SD/CF Express reader connected via USB-C to USB-C. This is definitely a failing for Fujifilm (and they’re not the only one’s struggling with this). But Fujifilm need to put some actual work into USB-C file transfers to smartphone, tablet and external HD. It’s ridiculous that they haven’t nailed this yet.

I'm fortunate that I've never had to load photos to my iPhone. I spend more time culling the photos from my phone rather than my MacBook Air, but that's just me. YMMV.

I think the new features only work with the XM5. On the Fujifilm web site they say: "......a USB-C connection enables high-speed transfer of video files of 4GB or more to both Android and iOS devices."

I don't get the problems. If you attach your camera (X-T5) with a USB cord, it shows up in both Photos and Lightroom as a "device" and you can now copy the photos (photos will copy both raw and jpeg, LR you can choose). Or you can even open the "files" and do the same thing. I am using Iphone 15 pro with ios18. But I could also do it with IOS 17. And regardless if the x-app is installed or not. On android it's a little different (Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra). When you plug the camera in, you get options which program you should use to open the "device". I just choose "lightroom" and import everything to the lightroom cloud (raw files or all files or whatever) You can also import to Android Gallery and get both raw and jpegs. What is the problem? PS: Have you tried to turn off the wifi option on the camera?

This is what my notion has been about why Fuji is goofing the autofocus as well… they don’t have good enough software developers! The GFX seems to be another story though, so maybe Fuji needs to either hand them the tasks, or get better developers in general

The Fuji X app used to work fine but then it updated and it no longer connects to my XT4 (latest firmware) and instead tells me to use the older Fuji Cam remote app. That app tells me that I should be using the newer X app, and around we go in circles :(

This is the way I always import. I import directly to Lightroom on my phone and it's sync'd across all my devices. WiFi and these apps are too slow anyway. I can import 300 photos using USB C while waiting for my train to depart the station after a street photo shoot after work. By the time I reach the next station, they're all imported and I can start browsing through them on my tablet.
