He just has a style that doesn’t work at the top of any division. It’s weird. His main mode of victory is more like a plan C for more fighters: catch a late KO. I think his main problem is just being too old to change that mindset

As the UFC has progressed it feels like there are times where a trainer can become pretty dominant and a lot of their fighters will get close to the top or even capture championships. Then they seem to fall off and another trainers' gym becomes dominant for a while. Trevor Whitman seems to be on a bit of a downslide. Khabib though seems to be doing pretty damn good right now but I'm not sure if that's also AKA? It's probably both of them together. I know Khabib stepped back for a while but it feels as if he is sort of more involved now again. This was a difficult fight for me because I'm a really big fan of sandhagen but I am definitely a stan for the Dagestani fighters

Why have the MMA GODS decided this fate? I actively rooted against Sandhagen for years until he fought Yan in a matchup where I hated both fighters. Since then, I've rooted for his skill advancement and even figured that karmically, him accepting a rescheduled fight against a difficult matchup when he could have reasonably waited for a title shot, would have meant he was meant to be champion. I even really like Umar and wanted to see him realistically climb up the ranks to No. 1 Contender. Idk. MMA fandom can leave you in a tailspin

I talked to one friend who is also friends with Umar, he said Umar has 120+ Muay Thai fights and sparred some of the best kickboxing/Muay Thai talent in Dagestan, including people who fought in ONE and fought for world titles in amateur kickboxing and national/world titles in Muay-Thai. This explains why the defense from kicks was so good. His parries and leg kick defense (especially when he started picking up the patterns and timings mid round 2 and started doing better) was so impressive! Looked like a really savvy Thai guy who he is. Many people thought if he had Nurmagomedov as a surname he's a Sambo or wrestling student... He's a Thai guy who was wrestling all along. That standup was amazing if you pay attention to details. Nobody made Cory look silly and timid like that.

I have never heard or read anything about Umar having had any Thai fights, only about him winning Sambo championships. sandhagen is very good all-around, and, similar to volk's performance vs islam in the first fight, showed exceptional takedown defense and ability to get up...but how many times do we have to watch this movie? whenever he faces someone championship-level, he loses. also, bc he lacks pop in his regular strikes, he has to land spinny shit to actually hurt his opponents. i get it, the technical ability shown in that fight is far superior to anything we've seen above 155 in a while, but fights like that are exactly why casuals don't care about the lower weight classes
