Luther Hargreeves is the leader of the Umbrella Academy. Nicknamed Spaceboy by the media, and often called Space by his siblings the rest of the family looks to his leadership during missions and later in life. Luther gets the nickname Spaceboy from the fact that he is the youngest person to ever go into outter space. He is the crown jewel and favorite child of his father Sir Reginald Hargreeves. After a particularly devastating mission to Mars, Luthers head is graphed to the body of a Martian ape.
Luther, and the rest of the Umbrella Academy, holds himself responsible for the death of his brother Ben Hargreeves, number 6, The Horror. Luther goes on many missions as a child, but as an adult has a difficult time asserting his authority to his siblings, specifically Diego. This video outlines the majority of his comic-book history.

She's got no reason to believe they will ever see her as less than a threat so as far as she can reasonably believe, that room is the rest of her life. A perfectly healthy person would quickly break under such circumstances and lasting 30 minutes is actually pretty long to hold out. I would have gave anyone 10, tops.

Luther’s strength feels so inconsistent to me. As a kid he can fling men around like rag dolls but as an adult he can’t even take out Hazel by himself and can’t take out people trying to murder him at the bowling place.

I think he best explains it in the video. He seems to have enough strength to complete a certain task at the time before he has a gorilla body so his strength does seem to fluctuate.

Maybe Luther’s strength is inconsistent because like Vanya’s powers it’s tied to his emotions. Maybe when he was a kid, he was a lot stronger since beating up bad guys seemed like a game. But as he grew up, he unconsciously weakened his powers himself, reluctant to hurt people 🤷‍♂️

well the reason he isnt as strong as an adult is because hes basically just as strong as rhe gorilla he was attached to, pretty sure he lost his powers when he had the surgery, at least thats how it seemed in the show, like, he was throwin burglars out of the bank windows but can barely hold his own against Diego 1 v 1? Diego isnt super strong, yet Luther cant even keep up, pretty sure its implied that hes not nearly as powerful after the surgery hes basically as strong as a gorilla in the show, and as strong as a martian space gorilla in the comic

@@Gibbypastrami I honestly just peg this up as inconsistent writing. I mean, they barely did much with Luther anyways. Also, unlike the comics, he was given a serum that transformed his body and ended up saving his life. His head wasn't grafted onto a gorilla's body. Also, remember the fact that in the comics, that gorilla body isn't a "normal" gorilla. That's just what I think. I also think the emotions theory may be correct and maybe it has to do with him going about things so that he doesn't just rip someone apart like a lego set on accident.

@@myfaultog4734 i sincerely doubt its just inconsistent writing, they purposefully made Luther not as effective, for one thing, i read an interview talking about the suit that Luthers actor wears, its bulky, not very flexible, and its really hot, so his movement usually is kind of clunky, so they would only be able to do big stunts with Luther through CGI assistance, but they never do, its also very possible that its because hes depressed like you were saying, we'll see eventually, but i doubt its 'inconsistent writing' because that would be a major plothole if that were the case, and from what ive seen, this show is pretty airtight, would seem like a weird time to choose to be inconsistent

Like you said, because of that clunky suit. At times the writing just felt that way to me. But other than that, the whole, "I don't wanna accidentally punch someone too hard turn them to spaghetti paste" makes sense.

In the show; He may have emotional issues causing his powers to be less effective And/or being on the moon for years caused him to atrophy (because that’s what happens to astronauts all the time) and he needs to gain that weight and muscle back. I’d like to see him mature and stop holding back in later episodes

Just watched the Netflix show, seams the apocalypse was Luthers fault. All he had to do was be nice to his sister when she returned to the house. Instead, he crushed her unconscious and then locked her up, that's when she lost it.

Pogo told Luther that Vanya's powers were tied to her emotions, and if someone slashed someone else's throat I too would think they weren't emotionally stable. Obviously he should've found a way to keep her contained without completely isolating her, that way they could all get on the same page about her powers.

If u haven’t watch the opening scene of season 2 episode 1 don’t read this alright so as we see in the first season they make Luther not as strong and endurable as he should be because he practically gets his ass kicked by hazel, Diego skimmed his arm with a knife and a giant Chandelier fell on him but in season 2 episode 1 in the opening scene when they were fighting the Soviet Union at war Luther uses his actual powers by jumping what could only be at tremendous height so he could take an RPG shot into the back and once the RPG hit him there was no scratch on and he didn’t even move 1 ft as he stood his ground. Then for the rest of the season Luther got his ass kicked multiple times. (It made no sense to me)

Also do you remember when both the number fives were fighting each other? In that scene Luther got knocked down by a fire hydrant thrown by klaus, who is probably the weakest in terms of muscle power. They are inconsistent as hell with luthers powers in this show

O always thought his strength was tied to his emotions sorta like Vanya- as a kid he's seld confident as the leader of the team, but as an adult-when the team is disbanded because of the conflict that he assumes is HIS fault- he's less confident and therefore weaker. In that scene with the rpg luther is out there kicking ass as the leader again, hence why he's so strong. Just a theory :p

Also it looks like No 1 is one of the characters who's more altered for the TV show. He got his Ape body by some serum in the TV show instead of a martian ape, he just sent samples back to earth instead of watching out while being on the moon, They have skipped sending him to the vietnam war entirely and as they've never shown much of their previous missions his role as leader of the team is much less established. Of course all of that might change with future seasons.

Like Spawn (a movie with children, yes) , the clown dude (Violator), I remember watching behind the scenes and seeing John leguizamo getting his makeup done and his custom put on. It's was an awesome job, im not entirely sure if zero CGI was added to his character, but we are talking 90s CGI, very cartoonish.

Well Diego was always competing with Luther to be number 1, that implies that he did follow orders, and hell he's still trying to be a hero to this day with his vigilante stuff. I assume Allison was number 3 cause she would occasionally lead the others astray. Klaus didnt have the stomach to fully embrace his gift, and who could blame him. Number five was too smart to listen to reason. Ben might have been effective but he was extremely reluctant to use his powers, its probably what got him killed in the first place. And we all know about Vanya.

At first I loved Luther, but as they went through the chapters only worsened his image, the only thing that matters to him is Allison, even he doesn't care for himself. They were all assholes with Vanya and did not learn the lesson that they should include her, she was also family with or without powers, are supposed to be all adults but have the same shit as before. Allison even tried at least a little to included Vanya but until when? The fault was not of the crazy one, it was not of the ministry or whoever controls the time, the fault was of the 5 of them, especially of the imbecile of Luther, who insisted and insisted, if his father basically had done to him what he did with Vanya , his father locked him up in a certain way by sending him to the moon. Love to Diego and Klaus their development could be seen. But for Allison more or less. Edit: but i suppose that's the trama. Also, one of his final line, "At least we're together at the end. As a family" You fucking bastard !!

my headcanon was in the comics he was sent by hargreeves to mars to set up a televator for mars colonization. A group of Martian gorillas found him, the mars apes being just as strong beat him to an inch of his life through numbers. somehow Luther and a gorilla got through the televator to monocle who then saved Luther. And disabled the mars televator.

@@jocelynar6165 Luthor in his prime could litterally fly with one jump, he was really, really, really, fast. Smart enough to master every task you gave him. Diego can hold his breath indefinitely granting him to survive hard situations like being trapped with toxic gas in a room, being choked, swin underwater forever (making him deadly underwater) and he can manipulate everything he throws, he trains everyday with a high sense of duty second only to Luther. I don't think it's from weakest to strongest.

I don't really think so-I think that they were just 2 (out of Sir Hardgreeves' adopted 7) children out of the 43 born that particular day,just probably seconds/moments between/after each other,but the birth mother..probably (and this is a _BIG notion/implication of PROBABLY_ that I'm giving over here,honestly) passed off Baby!Number one/Spaceboy (Luther) to either a sister/female relative of hers in the room/area in which she had given birth to with her and had them say it was _her-the sister's/Relative's-baby_ before Baby!Number Five/The boy (Five) came tumbling/popped out seconds later,and when Hardgreeves rolled around to adopt/collect the two babies/the children,the mother and the sister were like: _"Alright,my good Sir-You can each have both of my/me/mine and my sister's child respectfully,sir..just make sure they're raised in good hands,sir.."_ and he gladly thanked them and went on his way,babies in tow,of course.

Luther and his dad are the cause of the end of the world. When his sister returned home she was apologizing and Luther had the chance to talk and calm her down. But no he decided to knock her out and lock her up which in turn angered her and pushed her to her limit. Now she wanted to kill everyone thanks to Luther.

I wish he was closer to the rest of his siblings instead of just Allison. It bugged me during the show whenever he would doubt Klaus and what he did to Vanya (spoilers?). Not that he doesn't have his own flaws too and is pretty bad at conencting with anyone other than allison. And Dallas just ahs him get worse... also he does explain, in the comcis at least, he ahs trouble connecting with everything due to spedning so much time on the moon and not having a normal life or body

What I don't get is, in the comic his head is transplanted into an apes body. Yet afaik in the TV series it's suggested his father saved his using some sort of serum which had the side effect or giving him ape like features.

Yeah luthors father did give him a serum which changed his torso into an ape but in all honesty luthor always holds back so much and if he is in a better state of mind he could easily tear peoples arms from their sockets and punch a tank shell mid air and shatter it.
