One of the best-loved anime series of all time, Mysterious Cities of Gold developed a huge cult following when airing on ABCTV in Australia, and finally come to DVD in a special 6 disc collectors edition. In the tradition of Miyazaki's Spirited Away, the series features riveting characters, fantastic animation, and a magnificent plot that starts in Barcelona in 1532, and follows a young Spanish orphan named Esteban as he treads the path of the setting sun to Eldorado in search of his father and the Mysterious Cities of Gold.
When Esteban accompanies a party of Spaniards searching for gold in the New World, he is joined on his quest by Zia, an Incan girl kidnapped from her family who is also searching for her father, and Tao, the last descendant of the sunken empire of Hiva. Aboard the magnificent Golden Condor their adventures take them through an Incan empire under Spanish attack, to the vast Amazon forest, and the land of the Mayas. Resisting attack from tyrants and traitors, their goal is not gold but a long-awaited reunion with their loved ones. This acclaimed animation classic is presented here in its entirety, all 39 digitally remastered episodes in one must-have DVD collection

It's difficult to properly explain. But this intro holds a somewhat 'mystic' quality to it that really stood out in the 80s. And it still has that very same pull to this day. The exotic music, the atmosphere it conjures up, the visuals, and even the narrator's voice. All come together to transport you to another time and place. No cynicism, just pure escapist adventure.

The 1980s was probably the best time to be a child in human history, the FREEDOM, the toys, bikes were cheep enough for the working classes, there was the promise of future technology (now concord and the space shuttle are museum pieces) and kids tv, and the Goonies.

It’s soooo strange how theme songs from your childhood stays in our minds no matter how much time has passed by. I’m 46 now, but I remember being 10 and watching this on the Cartoon Network with my siblings. I don’t know what specifically it is that captures of memories. Is it the people from that time, the era, the mentality we had where a child is worry free or perhaps all the above. What a blessing. If I had a Time Machine, I’d go back to 10😊

I got so emotional when I went to Peru a few years ago. Lake Titicaca moved my heart, but I was in tears when reaching Machu Picchu at the end of 1:47 the Inca trail. I loved that anime so much that, as tired as I was on the last 2km of the trail, I put that opening (in French though..) on repeat and gave all that I left in my body. I rushed to make sure that I reached the nice viewpoint at the end of the commentary. People thought I was crying because of the effort, then never understood how much it meant for me to be there with that song in my heart for 35years of my life..

You read these comments on videos and you think it'll never happen to you... but it happened to me! Seeing these images again throw me back to my childhood instantly. What an incredible feeling!

Let's not fap ourselves to death about those decades and their shows - I couldn't love this show more for all it meant and still does, but this and all other shows from the 80s were rampant, violently sexist and racist garbage 80% (when not 95%) of the time. Today's kidsTV may be brutally dumb and commercial garbage (save for a handful genuine storytelling artworks), but our beloved childhood shows had entire plot lines that could only function as long as girls were feeble, dim crybabies prone to puppy love, and "natives" were cooky, demasculined goofballs who heartily gave away their cultural riches.

How surprise I was when I saw 0:46 La Puerta del Sol! The protagonist seems to have traveled all the way to Tiahuanaco, here in Bolivia! I don't know if we missed this show with my brother when we were kids or it never made it to South America.. This is the first time I've heard about it. 😮

It has no reason to be this good as an intro for a cartoon. But the 80s was filled with gems like this one. Whilst typing this, I have put the video on repeat, never gets old.

This series made me fall in love with Mesoamerican and Andean culture. It’s not even a little historically accurate, but the cultures referenced sparked a thirst for knowledge. There are so many fascinating cultures and stories, I wish there were more shows out there! I’m still unhappy that for the second season, instead of pulling from the rich plethora indigenous American culture, the writers sent them on a world tour instead

Yes it might not be historically accurate in the slightest but one must admit the way the writers brought in the alien and UFO theme/ plot into the storyline was very interesting and way ahead of their time. It has with the very confusing happenings starting with Varginha in Brazil, to Peru, the illegal gold miners and sightings of aliens and now Mexico with those Peruvian "alien bodies",.all this does bring one back to remember this amazing kids tv series that mentioned aliens as being a mysterious part of Andean and Meso American history.

Watching this helped my find my inner kid again... I'm 40 this year and watched this in the early 90s in South Africa. Amazing to see how far it reached, and the different the generations it touched. I loved trying to create that transforming boat/condor in lego. What a magical cartoon!

I was born in 2009 yet I still watched this as a kid, the theme is so nostalgic. Some of my favourite older shows include: •banana man •count duckula •danger mouse (the original) •the mysterious cities of gold •Sabrina (the witch cartoon) •inspector gadget And many more, yet most of those shows came out when my parents were kids lol!
