Bravo! I love this performance. I still remember the concert by the Philadelphia Orchestra with Eugene Ormandy right on the same stage in 1974. Lot's of fond memories at UM....................Stephen (Rackham 1974)

This group gets a wonderful clear sound (no mudiness) with full band playing on “The Great Gate of Kiev”.

Is it bad that every time I see a contrabassoon I say in my crumbliest voice possible, “contrababoon!”

Love the Old Castle-tough key it's in as far as producing good sounds for the saxes-great job with the sax solo. I think every saxophone student should at least play the Larry Teal version for alto and piano at some point!

I agree with you about the sax parts, especially the solo on the 4th movement. This concert key really puts it in a challenging key, intonation wise. Lots of written C# notes , which is an 'open ' note on the sax. This key puts it in an area where few, if any , notes are naturally in tune with the scale . This requires constant embouchure adjustments, to keep these notes in tune. The soloist did a great job in lipping up and down the appropriate pitches. I agree, every sax player should be required to play this as part of a degree program. It was required for me, back in the day. I was a music Ed major, sax was my primary instrument The Teal arrangement with piano is excellent. I truly enjoyed the entire performance

Awesome of course but does the solo euphonium player on Bydlo without a tie, still get an A?

This is one my favorite pieces of music. Prior to finding this performance, in my opinion, the CSO under Reiner was the best. Now, in my opinion, Reiners performance, although still excellent, is topped by this performance.

When I was a year 1 in band we played this at our very first competition and we only had 1 month to practice because we recently switched over to this and we got third place brings back so many memories from when I was a year 1 🥲😄

I love this, and want to share it, ... but the commercial interruptions are buzz kill inappropriate. Tragic.

Y ademas en tono original, con lo que dificulta en instrumentos transpositores, clavado a la orquestacion de Ravel, pero en Banda, jeje

That stage is extremely shallow. Amazing hall obviously but such an odd stage. I miss playing on it though.

Intonation....... nnnnnnnn. Otherwise, U of M excellence.

Yes, a little pitchy from the woodwinds (flute?) in a couple spots. But enjoyable overall. 22:02

Está muy muy bien, son aficionados y lo hacen maravillosamente bien, tu juicio es tóxico.

Arranged by Paul Lavendar? Is that accurate? This sounds identical to the Mark Hindsley arrangement from the 1960s, many performances of which by different ensembles are available on KZbin.

I mean, overall it was a good performance, and yes there was quite a few intonation issues, but I think they could have handled this piece a lot more delicately than they did. This piece is so much more complex than the notes on the page.
