Surprised at the numerous important conversations this stream. There is so much central dialogue around Umineko as a whole. A lot of food for thought. I remember pausing very frequently the more I read of this series to really digest what the characters are saying but a reread is definitely necessary to completely process the profound depth of Ryukishi's work. Also I noticed the complete thematic shift this episode. I think the story fully expects that you've figured out whodunnit and now is exploring the thought and emotion of it all. I think that's very interesting because most of the point is missed if you don't have a concrete person in mind. It's also the series at its most puzzling as the reader is burdened with a lot of heavy thinking and reading between the lines to make sense of it all.

God I hope battler learns to accept this new Beatrice, and instead of try to mold her, instead guide her to finding herself whatever form that takes her

*Spoilers, Watch the streamfirst!* The two Chickatrices I truly love as a concept. Ep5 made the culprit a lot more clear, the Whodunnit and Howdunnit, and Battler was able to grasp most of the mystery as a result. Enough to be a Game Master, however their existence seems to imply (in my opinion) that he doesn't fully get what the culprit went through. The complete Whydunnit, the full understanding of it. Yet by seeing the two parts of Beatrice interact, one devoted to Battler and one beholden to the Legend of the Golden Witch, we get a sense of that Whydunnit. Just a little more of it. I love it.

God, people really REALLY have zero "love" for George even when he's admitting just how awful and shitty he'd been. It's disappointing that people can't see both his flaws AND his strengths.

@@zeroanonymity9736i mean, it’s. It’s truly the age gap that ruins that. If Shannon were older, like 18 or 19, this would be MUCH LESS of a problem. It’d still make George being jealous of a 12yo at 17 both pathetic and weird but it would mean he wasn’t proposing to a minor six years later. And I KNOW the federal law in Japan at the time set 16 as the age of consent for girls but regionally it was always set to be higher than that. Western weebs have lorded that over people’s heads for decades despite not having a better understanding of it to defend underage nsfw.

Spoilers below This episode is starting off with a banger 1. I legit shouted in joy at the screen when I saw Ange return, I'm so happy we get our final Beatrice back. Featherine was also a fun addition. I'm a sucker for the "old immortal being who's desperate for any kind of entertainment" trope. 2. I really love how the latter 4 episodes so far have discussed truth. Whereas the question arcs focus on the argument that there is only one truth, since it's about Battler trying to uncover it through Beatrice's misdirection, the "answer" arcs pose the very important fact that the truth s malleable retroactively. How much of history has been written, then rewritten based on the chronicler's biases and knowledge, not even counting ulterior motives? It's kinda like House of Leaves in that regard, where the people analysing the found footage treat it like a movie, and rewrite Karen to be the villain of Navidson's story because she wasn't faithful to him or whatever. And Karen had to read those essays afterwards, and know that, to most readers who do not know her, this would become truth. And now we have Featherine's human-sona writing very convincing theories on what could've been Rokkenjima's story, and to many that will become the truth. In the same way, the readers are also writing that stuff with their own theories creating possible stories of Rokkenjima that to them could become truth. But is it the truth? 3. They went ham with the Battler and Kinzo parallels huh? E5 was already full of them with Battler inheriting the title of family head and in becoming a mage, but here it's not even subtle anymore. I enjoy this because it exemplifies the thought process that must've driven Kinzo to do what he did. It's awful! It's fucking awful! But it's a super interesting story. Only hoping Battler realises what he's doing and tries to be better than that old geezer before it's too late. 4. The two Beatrices becoming sisters and trying to grow together to completion is super cute, even if their end goal is really sad and motivated by filling out legacy. 5. I love Erika's journey from Mary Sue to the hated goblin. She's so creepy and petty and pathetic, absolutely deserved. 6. Something between theory and musings: B.P.'s theory on Shannon being Beatrice got me thinking about it. Beatrice is a title, something that can be passed down, as we've seen, and it seems to be only passed down between specifically women on Rokkenjima (Virgilia being Kumasawa, Beatrice II being someone else, then Evatrice and Angetrice). Something I find very important is witchhood itself being something predominately attained in the story by women, particularly younger women, reads very neatly as a literal power fantasy - to have the power to change things that are out of your control, especially when you're a woman in a patriarchal setting. Following that, my thoughts are that the title of Beatrice represents something like ambition above one's standing. In the Divine Comedy Beatrice is ranked among holy women of the bible at the end, so I could see attaining the title as signifying a pursuit of an ideal, in the footsteps of Dante's Beatrice (which, with the emerging theme of legacy, works very well). All these women want to be more than they are, or want something impossible, either realistically or because of their standing - Eva wants to be powerful despite being a woman, Ange wants her family, and my idea here is that Kumasawa served whoever was the person trapped in Kuwadorian, and taught that girl to dream of more than she had. After Beatrice died though, Kumasawa's Beatrice (Virgilia) was sealed away, as to depict the woman abandoning ambitions because she saw them lead to a disaster (maybe also a metaphor for forgetting). And I think B.P. could be onto something if Shannon was using that same title in pursuit of ambition. She isn't a Beatrice, but she wants to be, she wants that freedom and miracles (not being furniture, becoming free, falling in love) and honestly her having contacts w/ Beatrice could be a metaphor for her dabbling in such dreams, similar to how Natsuki engages her more awful desires through Beatrice - it would be improper for her, the wife of the head, to dislike the baby, but if it was the witch who hurt it, it'd be allowed. It's kinda like w/ Mr Hyde - a separate person to bear all the base urges and dark desires so that Jekyll can stay pure and respected. I'm not calling Beatrice a split personality or anything, just a vessel for those darker thoughts and impulses that enables them through distancing them from yourself. Back to Shannon, her ambition was to be free, and Battler could've been her younger self's way out of this life she wants to escape. But then he left and never came back, so she festered, and eventually snapped. "If i cannot be freed by my masters, I'll free myself". So she initiates the murders, though whether she ever finishes them, I don't think so. I think she's also the one who dresses up in front of Maria to play Beatrice to help solidify that myth to her own advantage - she's one of the people who most often spreads the stories and engages in misdirection (she's involved in the lie of Kinzo being alive after all). Knox's 10 prohibit the culprit being someone we have not been introduced to, after all. So I do think Shannon has some strong points towards being the culprit of at least the beginning murders. Hell, we don't even know everyone died at the end of the first game. Maybe Shannon faked the deaths of the 6 who remained and then they all went to live in hiding, away from the family's legacy. George could've also slipped on a rock and died in this interpretation so we don't have to consider whatever the fuck he has for Shannon ever again jhglhkgjlk Also, regarding the Beatrice who lived on Rokkenjima in Kuwadorian and later died on the cliff with Eva. I wonder if there was ever only one, or if Kinzo used the orphanage to bring in multiple kids and try to raise them as Beatrice (barf). I wouldn't put it past him. And it'd also make sense why so many of them are "furniture" - if they're not Beatrice, they're nothing. This story is about how people try to mould others to be specific people with specific traits, just look at how the youngest generation of Ushiromiyas are treated by their parents, how George was taught to be a nice guy, how Rosa treats Maria for not being a "normal" child, how Jessica isn't allowed to engage her true hobbies at home. Kinzo trying to mould kids to fill that role in his heart is awful but he would do it. Ough that's a long post I went off there. Idk if it'd be possible to have this theory part read out during the next theory corner, since those happen late at night in my timezone, but if it did I'd be super grateful, Marcie. No obligation though!

I believe I've even compared the two before, but the House of Leaves comparison is even more apt than you may realize, haha. There is a LOOOOT of overlap between the two works imo.

I'm still at the beginning but omg if it turn out battler is a kinzo clone and him and battler are just recreating themselves and beatos in an endless loop I'm going to lose my shit. I noticed alot of the meta narrative stuff early on but didn't expect to see this get so intense. I'm so jealous I would love to have gotten a ryukishi autograph
