One of the most remote places on earth, it has experienced little human activity. The Inuit name, Umingmak Nuna, means the place where the musk oxen live, but the sparse vegetation supports only a small population. About twice the size of Scotland, it only has two permanent settlements: Aujuittuq (Grise Fjord) (c160) in the south, where people live by hunting and fishing, and Alert (c40), the most northerly settlement in North America, where there is a military outpost and weather station.
This video records a journey to Ellesmere Island from Baffin Bay, visiting Boger Bay on Smith Sound. It then goes north into Nares Strait, which seperates Canada from Greenland. Normally ice choaked, in September 2019, the pack ice was only found beyond 80 degrees N. Many sailors have perished here searching for Franklin, the North West Passage or the mythical polar ice-free sea.
