"When designing California Games, I remember we had a big brainstorm with the team and were all putting event ideas onto a big whiteboard. Skateboarding was hot at the time, so we decided we had to do something with it. I was also a keen skater and decided that a side-view half-pipe event would work really well from a technical aspect. To create the skater animation frames, we used Epyx's innovative animation tool called 'Wilbur', which was created especially for the equestrian event in Summer Games. It got its name from a TV show in the '50s that featured a talking horse whose owner was called - you guessed it - Wilbur". -- Chuck Sommerville, co-designer and programmer

I do remember how to beat the record on halfpipe and surfing: for half pipe, don't do the handstand. If you go higher and time your turn, you can reverse in the air. By doing so, you will gain more speed. After a few turns the skater will go off the screen, but the turn will remain working as long as you time write. This way you can continue very long and gain most points. For surfing we would try to out run the wave first( half the time) and we woulthen do a reverse loop into the wave as close to the watter as possible. If I rememebr correctly, this could be done twice in one wave giving you the most points. Funny how some of this stuff still is in your memory after 30 + years. Thanx for the video, good memories!

Oh, man! Memories! I remember having nightly tournaments on this for a while, back in the day. We'd load up in practice mode though, so we could have endless goes on one event and just note any good scores. Loading was horrendous on tape, if you only had one go each. We'd start with half-pipe, play it 'til we were undoubtedly sick of it, then load up the next event and so on. It was strictly forbidden to skip the credit screen with the car licence plate. It took exactly 0.50 on the tape counter, don't know why I remember that 2 decades on. The easter eggs throughout the game were legendary. None of us knew exactly what triggered them, but when you got one it was the highlight of the night's entertainment. I can remember the earthquake in half-pipe, which collapsed one of the letters in the Hollywood sign. The shark in Surfing. I've just watched a video of a UFO in the flying disc game. And "Hit George." in Footbag. Good times.

@doteaters4 жыл бұрын
Yes, as I've mentioned in previous videos I've done, I like to keep the loading times intact in these C64 videos to give kids today an idea of what we had to put up with. Of course, if you want a modern interpretation of old-school loading times, play GTA Online. ;) I have to admit that occasionally, in the editing process I've halved the loading time, and then halved THAT, and the time still seems interminable ;)

california games takes FOREVER to load
@scottythegreat1 Жыл бұрын
That was every Commodore 64 game from 1986 onwards. In 1982, no one thought much of it as games were 30Kb or less. It wasnt until 1984 when games required a few minutes just to load. Thats why Epyx came up with the Fastload cartridge, and even then, it was still slow compared to what else was out there by 1985. Go and play Maniac Mansion and Zak McCracken. Theres a reason the game designers used a snail when you went from screen to screen on the Commodore 64 versions.

You know what they should do with this series, make a sports competition game show based off this game where teams of older kids and teenagers would compete in different various sports to see who would win a summer championship, it would basically be like the show Maximum Drive ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2rTdmh6m7tmjLc ) only it would have more extreme sports and the events would have traps and obstacles to be thrown at the players as do the event like beach balls & squirt guns, and it would all have late 80s/early 90s feel to it, do you think that would be good
