I mean, if you watch his normal delivery (first 2-3 pitches covered in the video), you see that his left foot acts as essentially a small pivot motion to contact the rubber. However during the illegal delivery, his left foot leave the ground, and leaves contact with the rubber. This is a case of 1) Ump actually calling it correctly, and 2) Nestor doing something wacky, and it backfiring on him because he established his own natural motion earlier in the at bat.

where do you draw the line, though? Pitcher after pitcher has a slight break from the rubber, just to get you foot in the right position. Right foot went back and he remained on the rubber as well as most other pitchers. I would be more inclined to go with the quick pitch issue, if anything at all.

The rule itself is actually just lifting your back foot off the rubber but all the way down to 13U ball you won't get called if it's just about fixing food position for a throw, but you will always get it called when it's part of a deception

Also... why do we not have the pitch clock on the tv overlay? If it was below 8 seconds, it doesn't matter if the batter wasn't looking or ready, he's legally required to be alert and ready by then.

It's not OK to take little hop steps on the mound in order to quick-pitch. If I was home plate umpire, I'd have given him a 2-minute minor penalty for Unsportsmanlike Conduct. 🤔
