I mean, if you watch his normal delivery (first 2-3 pitches covered in the video), you see that his left foot acts as essentially a small pivot motion to contact the rubber. However during the illegal delivery, his left foot leave the ground, and leaves contact with the rubber. This is a case of 1) Ump actually calling it correctly, and 2) Nestor doing something wacky, and it backfiring on him because he established his own natural motion earlier in the at bat.

Pretty stupid when pitchers try to resort to trickery. Win games because of your skills, not because of your silly antics.

Hey Jomboy you need to check out bottom of the 2nd inning in yesterday's O's game. The ump changed his mind and I have no idea what happened.

He stepped behind the Rubber mound dohickey; Whatever it is called; and so it LOOKED like he was stepping off. I'd have called shinanigans too! BTW just what IS that rubber pitchers mound thingy called Jomboy?

Doing stuff like that is practically asking the ump to miss calls. The ump probably isn't ready for the pitch either.

I don't know why Nestor Cortes is allowed these gimmick deliveries. It's not his normal delivery so those pitches should not count according to the rules.

Yankee fans defending Nestor can cope. Either be good enough to strike out the batters in the same manner and pace as every other pitcher or pitch at your local fields. This is embarrassing. The goddamn Yankees don't need gimmick pitchers with their level of payroll. Hire better pitchers, not quicker ones.

Well... he DID step back with his right foot. Laz gave away his blunder right there. He got the feet mixed up and truly thought this was a step off. Also... why do we not have the pitch clock on the tv overlay? If it was below 8 seconds, it doesn't matter if the batter wasn't looking or ready, he's legally required to be alert and ready by then.

I'm not sure whether or not the rulebook supports Laz's ruling, but I agree with it regardless. What the pitcher did looked illegal. It's not OK to take little hop steps on the mound in order to quick-pitch. If I was home plate umpire, I'd have given him a 2-minute minor penalty for Unsportsmanlike Conduct. 🤔

Quick pitching or slow pitching a batter is bush league crap. Off-speed pitches are also bush league crap. Pitchers should wind up and throw with the same speed each time.
