I was looking to buy the UNA Organic Mattress for some time now. It's great that you've decided to review it! I must say you make them most comprehensive and trustworthy mattress reviews out there. Keep up the great job you're doing!

A very helpful video, thank you! I've just spent several days investigating all of the 'natural' options out there and this highly configurable mattress looks like a contender. Thanks again!

I bought a Latex Sense mattress, not organic but then again I won’t be eating it. I have a firm mattress, with a density of 80 kg/m3 which is midway between the Una medium and soft, so I assume it is really a medium on their scale. I like it very much, no smell, and cool even in mid summer. I like that I don’t sink into it. Ten years ago I bought a cheap medium foam mattress with a thin memory foam layer on top. It tends to sag, and can be a bit warm. Two years ago I bought a Harrison Spinks Emerald mattress in medium tension. It was a luxury buy, £950. Horrible. The wool layers on top were too warm, and it provided no support. They use layers of micro springs which make the mattess very soft. It really was uncomfortable. Fortunately when I complained they assessed it faulty (slightly more sag than allowed), they replaced it, and I sold the replacement on ebay unused. I sat on the replacement while still in the plastic wrapper, before I sold it, and it was just as soft as the original. And. by all accounts pocket spring mattresses don’t even last ten years due to natural sag. I might have bought a Una mattress originally had I known the Harrison mattress would be so horrible. The multiple layers is a nice way to adjust the tension. However I only made £700 from the Harrison mattress sale and didn’t want to splurge out even more money. I do like the Latex Sense mattress though. You should test one, if you have the time.

not sure i agree about the natural sag of pocket springs. maybe you mean inner coil? pocket springs can in a range of quality just like the density of a foam mattress. a good quality pocket springs should outlast a foam layer doing the same job.

@@alanrossreviews Harrison Spinks, who make high quality pocket spring mattresses, have a chart of the allowed sag versus age in years. The chap who inspected my Emerald 14500 mattress showed me the chart. We’re not talking mm, but cm. Not surprisingly I can’t find this chart online, I doubt they would want to advertise it. I’m not sure if the springs themselves compress with time, but the upholstery certainly does. The filling (wool, cotton etc) can compress, and move. The tufts are there of course to reduce movement of the filling. I’ve read that a good pocket spring mattress can last ten years max, cheap foams last maybe seven years, latex can last decades. That said, I’ve read of Visprings lasting twenty years. In the case of Harrison Spinks, the higher the price of the mattress, the greater the number of micro springs, the softer the mattress.

ah! thats different, yes the layers above will give before the springs. check the warranty, they all specify the dip allowed before its a warranty issue. its an industry standard thing. dip is different to local softening. they talk about a visible dip but more of an issue to me is the weakening where it only dips once you lay on it. you have to be careful of the terms they use. yes natural latex with high density can last for years but depends on your weight and the use it gets. compression decompression will get to all these mattresses in the end. anways the pocket springs do not have a natural sag but the layers above do have what they will call settlement.

Hey Alan, I'm really looking forward to your full review - I'm quite close to dropping some wonga on this matress, but would be great to have a decent unbiased review as this matress seems to have been ignored by the other reviewers, yet it seems like it could be a great product. However, it should be pointed out it's not exactly 100% Dunlop Latex, it may be produced using the Dunlop process, and it may be 100% natural organic ingredients wich is excellent, but it's not technically 100% Latex. The product used in the matress cores is known as Graphite Latex - or if my detective work has served me well, to be more precise on this specific product, Graphite "Infused" Latex. If you Google "Graphite Latex" you'll be able to learn more about it. As far as I can tell, this particular form of latex is likely sourced from Latex Global in India, see the article here @ bedtimesmagazine dot c0m /2017/10/latex-foam-gets-new-bounce-beds/ - you can see an image of the graphite latex just over halfway down the page. The actual percentage of Graphite vs Latex is not disclosed on Una's website, but it would be interesting to know as it's bound to be a cheaper product - thus the reason Una can sell the matress at a more affordable price. I can't imagine anyone would be able to afford to sell full 100% Latex Dunlop at 24" thickness at their current prices. (Una - please correct me if I'm wrong!) Many companies use graphite latex as a very thin (1-2cm) top and bottom layer just to surround the main core of more expensive latex matresses just as a fire retardent (due to the laws in both the UK and the US) - whereas here, Una seem to be using it for their main core to minimise costs - which I don't have a problem with so long as the difference in feel and longevity is minimal. It would be very interesting to know how the graphite affects the feel and durability of the product over time - I've read that graphite latex can certainly have a firmer feel overall, maybe less bounce/springiness - as for its long term durability as a full mattress, I'm not so sure. It would be great if you could do a bounce test with a heavy weight on different configurations of the matress too - and maybe even compare it against the other matresses you've reviewed. (although it has to be said, there's no way on earth I'd go for any of the other "bed in a box" matresses due to polyurethane and nasty chemicals used - still, I'd be very interested in a comparison, and I'm sure others would too as it seems to be an area often missed out on many matress reviews - most of whom I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw 'em - thankfully you seem to be less corruptible than oither affiliates! ..and before I forget, another Latex based matress I'd love to see a review and comparison with would be the Milam Mattress - looks really interesting too!

Yes on paper it ticks a lot of boxes! Probably ignored by reviewers because there is no affiliate program running with these guys as yet so no way for them to earn some money! That’s all most of them are in it for. Yes you are correct that this is more accurately called Graphite infused Latex, I will go into more detail in my review. I think I did say it contains carbon which of course is how Una describe the graphite. There is much confusion and misinformation between graphite infused and graphite latex. Graphite latex seems to now be considered a default 30/70 split. The colour is normally a uniform grey while the Una layers are more of a speckled colour so I do not the percentage used and it may be lower, I really cant say. You may be right also about Latex Global, I had been thinking supplier might be Latex Green. Graphite is said to add durability to the latex but im not sure it's been properly demonstrated. Of course it makes it fire retardant and also helps with heat transfer. In reality there is only two ways to configure, firm on bottom and then swapping around medium and soft above. I guess you could go med/soft and firm on top but that would really be a push I would think. Will be testing both soft and medium on top.

Just to say I have since found out that Una do not use either of the companies we talked about, they actually have their own producer. Also it is only the UK version of Una that has the added graphite to comply with UK fire laws (maximum 20%). International versions are actually 100% natural latex.

@@cathalsurfs i am happy with mine using soft/medium/firm. as someone normally happy with memory foam i was pleasantly surprised that it works for me. i cant say if your experience will be the same as it is very individual but i am happy its a decent quality mattress that delivers what it claims. latex has a push-back and spring which is something to be aware of, una has less of this than other latex mattresses i have tried, for me thats a good thing.
