At 71 John Byrne is making better comics then kids half his age. This is fantastic, I'll have to grab them up! Back in the day when John was drawing the X-Men I was up at Marvel a lot and snagged copies of his pencils while he was still on the book. These books feel the same as the classics, he hasn't lost any quality or enjoyment in his work! Amazing!
@rbiznezz23 жыл бұрын
That Byrne art is at least 90% among some of his finest draftsmanship. The man is a true living legend, warts and all. I'd love to see what it would look like inked by some of today's guys like Ivan Reis or even a 90s guy like Scott Williams. There's not a lot of guys that immediately come to mind that can handle the varying textures and depictions of depth that Byrne put into this work. Still massively impressive after all these decades.

John Byrne still has his chops to say the least. He's also a product of a certain editorial philosophy that stressed storytelling above all else. That means, among other things, the ability to draw with equal conviction the cosmic and the mundane.

Thank you for this video... I had no idea this thing existed! I grew up as a comic fan in the 80s and 90s, and Byrne was THE MAN for me (I was too young to care/know much about Kirby at the time... so Byrne was my Kirby equivalent). It blows my mind that he has essentially created 17 full 20+ page issued of "doujinshi" with his own version of Uncanny X-Men. Downloading them now and reading them soon. Honestly boggles my mind how he has pretty much pulled away from comics work entirely and just does commissions and things like this over on his forum.
@NatsuMatto3 жыл бұрын
After reading the first few issues of this... not gonna lie... it definitely needs an editor. Story-wise, it's not the man's best work. Art-wise, it's still beautiful to look at. I realize, of course, that this is "free" doujinshi put out into the world and I shouldn't expect the same level of perfection as if it WAS a Marvel product.

Awesome vid and analysis of one of my favorite artists of all time. I was a rabid fan back in the day and reading the Elsewhen series is like going back in time . Never thought I`d ever see Byrne draw X-Men again. Currently on issue 6 and having a blast. Byrne has been re-inventing himself ...I don`t see a lot of Byrne`s usual stock poses and tropes that he used back in the day. Turning out 3 or 4 pages a day, he took a few shortcuts here and there, but there`s a lot of new stuff in Elsewhen. I got to get my hands on that book too. Thanks for posting!

The boys are right on target about Byrne's art on this project. It's among the best he's ever done, which is impressive to see at this point in his career. Storywise, though, it's not a patch on the actual Claremont/Bryne run. It's well-done old school super hero comics, don't get me wrong. But it's lacking that edge of perversity Claremont brought to the table. So I guess what I'm saying is, I want a little "My Dinner With Andre" to go along with the Lee/Kirby action.

Really historically important that somebody like Byrne is doing "bootleg fanfac" without editorial hindrance or legal authorization. I've had arguments on Facebook from fans who just don't see the significance of this but to me it's the future not only of comics but of entertainment properties. Cannot be overstated how important this is. (And I'm not even a Byrne fan be any means; to my mind he has tremendous deficiencies as an artist. But even I can see this is some of the best stuff he's ever done, and completely without corporate bigwigs or editorial retreats.)

Byrne's early digital lettering was apparently based on Dave Gibbons hand lettering. There was a story circulating fandom at one point where Gibbons wryly called Byrne out about that during a comic panel (how Gibbons must have been doing it in his sleep), at which point Byrne pulled out a chequebook and immediately wrote him a cheque during this panel. In some versions of the urban legend, Gibbons told Byrne it wasn't enough.
