Protip. There are dwarf cabbages (Tiara) that taste better and are ready in nearly half the time. It took me 60 days from transplanting to get 500 heads of small cabbage this year, for example. Why have one big head when you can just grow five Tiara and be done in half the time? There are also purple dwarf cabbages. Once you grow them you will be hooked. Travis' cabbage just heading, while i'm sitting here eating some cabbage. YUM YUM YUM!

@@sislertx If you want a quick sprouting broccoli try Happy Rich, Asparabroc, or my favorite BC1611. The big farmers that farm sprouting broccoli usually use Montebello, if you can find the seeds.

I stumbled upon this cabbage called Stonehead this year that has a maturity date of 60-65 days on the seed packet and gives you about a 4lb-6lb head of cabbage. I transplanted them out in spring on March 28 and by May 24 (57 days) I harvested them. Then in fall I transplanted them August 31st and by October 13th (43 days) I harvested them. I start the seeds indoors for 4-5 weeks before I transplanted them but they’ve been the fastest growing cabbages I’ve ever grown. I like growing this Stonehead variety with another variety that has a longer maturity date so the stonehead cabbage is mature and harvested a couple weeks before the longer variety is finished.

Thanks. One of my broccoli is 3 inches and others about one inch. 5 gallon buckets. The Cabbages are forming the best heads I have ever had , going into my third year as an amateur gardener. I always give my best cabbage to friends to show off a bit and they love making a fuss over it. They always let me know what dish they made out of it. Another month at least for some full heads. . I gather many different greens for smoothy drinks every 2-3 days. Dandelion greens, sweet potato greens,, kale from last year, cabbage, broccoli, onion greens, moringa, katuk, aloe, and spinach. I just love gardening!!!

Nice looking brassicas Travis! I always enjoy growing brassicas. That megaton cabbage is my favorite. Those things get massive, bigger than basketballs. I have a tough time with brussel sprouts. My season is too short or something. I get tall plants with big leaves but just start to get sprouts by the end of the season. May have to try some different varieties. I finally managed to grow good cauliflower after many failures. On the other hand, my broccoli is insane! Huge plants that don't stop. The side shoots many times make pretty good sized heads, and they just keep making more. I'm a firm believer in healthy soil, healthy plant, less pest issues. No doubt your chickens are helping with those pretty brassicas.

I have collards, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli growing! Everything is doing very well. My onions are struggling and I’ve planted carrots three times and only have a handful that have actually germinated. I don’t know what’s going on with these now. The first two times it was too warm but we’ve been cooler now so I’m perplexed. I even have acorn squash, green beans, butter beans and tomatoes growing. Zone 10a, Southwest Florida.

I'm 8b I had to place straw over my carrot beds and water 1-2 times a day. Ive had excellent germination by doing that.

i’m having problems with germination for some reason. I have reseeded many things myself. Sept was so dern hot. My stuff should be going crazy with all the hot compost I made all summer. My beds are all reammended. I’m in 9b Sw Fl. It’s fustrating. And I’ve been gardening iver 40 yrs. FL has been the toughest . (Been down here 10 yrs). Never had problems on my 10 acres in Mich. I dunno. Good thing I like gardening, cause I never give up. And now I have an armidillo or coon digging like no tomorrow! Ugh. My sweet potatoes are doing good though.

My cabbages have done awful this year, onions and garlic so far are fine, which is what im concentrating on right now, we have temps at like 40 at night which is helping reinforce the vernalization i did in the fridge for my garlic. We have had a few hot days.

Your plants look great. Mine were started a lot later since I am a good bit north of you and I am still not real sure about this growing things in the winter. I will be putting a few cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts out soon and we'll see how it goes. Right now there are turnips, beets, chard, carrots and kale in the garden that seem to be doing fine but I do keep the frost cloth on them (we had one this morning).

Beautiful garden❤️. I have purple cabbage growing that I started from seed in September. The heads are almost ready to pick. No idea of the variety because I started the plant from grocery store cabbage. It went to seed and have been using the seeds for a couple years now. My broccoli has already bolted. I am in 9b.

Very nice. I saved some seeds from the giant butternut, hopefully can get one bigger this year. My biggest megaton cabbage weighed 24 pounds up here in Minnesota. Think you might beat that this year if they keep looking that good.

Travis, you do know Bella "photo-bombed" you while you were talking about brussel sprouts.... We are trying some of the "mini" cabbage this year. Variety is Katarina, but it's not yet ready to harvest. I got it planted late and it's been a little slow, but it does look very healthy. We have been down to 25* one night, and it has not phased our cabbage, broccoli or broccolini. Our broccoli has not yet started to form heads, but the broccolini mini-center head will be ready to pull in a few days (and I hope the side shoots kick off soon after that).

I’m in Maryland, nights currently down into the 20s and 30s, and my broccoli and cabbage are doing well. Our Brussel Sprouts must have this cool weather....the pests are horrible in the summer. It seems it takes some hands on experience, and patience, to get these Sprouts to head up. I’ve never heard of Bama Perlite....maybe it’s used in Mobile or somewhere...

Pests will absolutely eat healthy plants. I believe it’s more of an opportunity thing. If the pest numbers are high enough and the food is available they will eat. Bigger plants can tolerate more pests, so healthier plants might not show as much damage as smaller ones. Looking forward to doing more chicken vegetable rotation in some of my fields too.

Looking good Travis, mine aren't quite as big as yours but I'm growing a smaller type cabbage. I've no need of huge cabbage heads with only two of us and neither of us like fermented cabbage. Like cauliflower raw but dislike it cooked, I didn't plant any but I'd like to have a few heads, is it to late to start some and plant them out, or will it get to hot in our area before they can head?

Yes. We have a few plants growing in one of our raised beds right now. Mine doesn't bunch up tight like that either. I think that's more a function of the packaging than the plant itself.

Pests will attack good heathy plants growing in healthy soil if they can sense them. A stressed plant, be it lack of micro /macro nutrients, water, heat, cold, lighting etc. is like a shining beacon in the dark to them. The plant puts out different chemical signatures, the vibration(electric frequency), uv/infra red, and visible spectrum lighting is also different. Pests can sense these differences and are drawn to them.

This is one of the benefits of a good healthy soil biome.

Looks like you know Charles Dowling. He’s the guy I hit you up about not fertilizing, but just only using compost in the fall. Your chickens eating/pooping the cover crops is a plus. I still think the ultimate goal is self-sustenance. Buy nothing external. Except water. Hey, it's a goal. The brassicas are usually readily available in the stores, and potatoes. But you got me interested in trying brussel sprouts next year. Like okra, they keep producing, vertically. You still side dress which is just odd to me??? Why don’t you just top dress with less? It just seems like you are fertilizing... dirt, and expecting the roots to utilize what they want.
