Johnny the day any of us stop learning is the day we draw our last breath. This video was just what I needed. Haven't tried it yet, but, makes very logical sense. I'm just setting up first station since about 1982 when I was a kid. I've been having problems being able to hear others over the static. Yesterday I made a contact about 55-60 miles away, I could just barely make out his words, though he said I was swing his meter 4 s units. My antenna is a Hebrew version of a starduster 1/4 wave ground plane. Looks the Grinches Christmas tree, but hey it works. Just needs some tweaking and a price of real 50 ohm coax, I'm using 75ohm cable TV coax cut to 2 half wave lengths. I wish I could afford an swr meter, that would help greatly. Anyway I'll say 73's for this one God bless and keep up the good work. 690 Arkansas, po' boy

Dang man, you aren’t doing too bad though, 55 miles ground wave is pretty good You may want a pre amp once you get your ground rod installed. SWR meters are cheap on ebay, you can usually get then for under 10 bucks. Thanks for sharing your story po boy (your name makes me hungry I wish I had a poor boy sandwich right now) 73’s 150 NC cliffhanger 🖖

Don't beat your ground rods in ! Take a spade and dig a circular hole , say a spades depth deep ! Add some water, then begin with the pointed end of the ground rod at the center of the hole ! Push down, then pull up ! Add water as needed ! Continue to push the rod down, then pull up, and the rod will be in the ground before you know it ! Easy peasy ! (Obviously, if you strike a rock, you may have to adjust your position ?) Always check with Julie before you dig ! Hope this helps ! 👍😉

I did this and tore my neighbors up, I unhooked it and they don't hear me over their tv, phone, stereo, toaster etc. So I hooked it back up because my noise level did drop a lot to hear the bottom dwellers and that by far is more important then their tv, phone, stereo... I think it's because when I key up it interferes with the neighbors vibrator I'm sure of it. Anyway nice video thanks for the information. #12 Watkins Glen, NY waving 🤘

@@JohnnyNJones I just noticed this, seven months later. Lucky I'm on top of things. Steel is NOT an approved method for grounding, with the exception of UL approved galvanized steel (with zinc) grounding rods in some cases. The issue is that steel causes a galvanic reaction with the ground (aka- it rusts). The issue is that once it rusts, it presents a poor connection to ground in the forum of resistance. Going back to basic ohms law, this creates a difference of potential between your house ground (utility ground) and this added ground. That manifests as current flow between the two, separate grounds.
@JohnnyNJones
@JohnnyNJones 7 ай бұрын
@@timmack2415 oh yeah, I’m aware of that. I just had that on hand and wanted to use it for the experiment plus being galvanized it should help.

Your ground could inprove even more by using copper rod and pouring mackalite in a hole and inside the pipe what professional use and the with a ohms voltage meter measure the resistance thats then a good earh system 👍 73s de 2E1DNC uk 🇬🇧

I have heard that too! Thank you 👍 I figured a copper rod would work better but I wanted to know if I can find something that would be easy for someone to just get their hands on. The way I see it if you can ground your station with whatever you have laying around at least it’s better than not grounding at all. But I agree with you and I’m going to have to try it out myself 🤘 Thank you my friend ☺️

Being that I am new to this, where is the correct spot to place the lightening arrester? I see you placed it on the ground rod. Is it ok to place it close to the feed line of the antenna with a ground wire going to the ground rod?
@JohnnyNJones
@JohnnyNJones Жыл бұрын
Honestly I did it for a noise reduction and that would work pretty well for noise reduction if the wire isn’t that long. (although grounding directly to a rod will be better) As far as deterring lightning you would need to make sure that you didn’t use any soldered connections because they would melt so it would have to be mechanical connections. The ARRL antenna handbook should help you out a lot in that area too. But if I were you I would put it on the ground rod that way it cut out most of the noise on the radio. You could run a short run of coaxial cable and do the same thing I did. Don’t worry about losses there have been so many people worried about connection losses when it’s been tested out to be very negligible I remember one test where someone had hooked 15 or 20 connectors together and still only lost one DB or so which is pointless to even worry about

Those Aliens are from the planet Sing Sugar Baby, they can sing Higher or Lower, but you gotta get it right to hear them, they sometimes sing a bit of frequency, so use the clarifier know to hear them properly! The very first antenna I put up (Silver Rod) I put a ground rod in the next day, big difference. Also on my car, I found having a static grounding strip when stationary made a bit of difference, though not so much. But as we were using illegal CBs (American ones) we had to use them sitting in our cars out of sight in some back road, or risk having it taken away (like a few I knew) and every bit helped, there were not too many at the start. We got FM CBs after that, no need to hide, but we had to hide the radios then as they were getting stolen! When I put up my antenna, I didn't give to to much thought, but there was a metal drain pipe behind the antenna, just the right distance to act as a reflector. My mate said one night "You are a very strong signal in one direction" so he looked at the antenna, got out a tape and said "It is exactly the right distance to act as a reflector" so we then made it even stronger by connecting the two, I went up from 9+10 to right off the scale at his house. If we didn't want to be bothered, we would go to high power, and we didn't hear anyone!
