@@JohnnyNJones I'm mainly trying to have local and regional comms. On 20 meters I've made contacts ranging from a few blocks to 3,000 miles. On 40 meters I routinely talk up and down the West Coast. I'm currently looking to build an off-center dipole antenna for my little CB radio. These apparently can be built for different wavelengths. I'm going to try 1/4 wave. It will be 9 feet on the driven side and 4.5 feet on the ground side. I will probably wrap these around PVC to make the physical size smaller.

@@tangobayus that sounds pretty cool. There’s a few calculators online that definitely help out with the number of turns for a shortened antenna. I can’t remember the math in my head I’m hoping to get my general license soon

I’m referring to the brand name. Like I said in previous comment, Apple iphones are manufactured in China. But it’s not a Chinese brand, therefore they’re going to oversee quality product. Chinese brands don’t have to have any quality whatsoever. In fact, food doesn’t even have to be real in china. I’ve seen Chinese brands produce plastic rice because food laws are nonexistent apparently. When people figure out what they’re doing and stop buying the food, they just create another brandname and sell more. There are exceptions of that rule, brands like Retevis that are made in China, but are sold to Americans. Tend to enforce enough quality to keep their brand-name alive over here.

All solar panels are made in China. Sorry.
@JohnnyNJones
@JohnnyNJones 17 күн бұрын
China does produce 86% of solar panels. The country of manufacture is not really a problem to me. It’s the company brand itself. Apple iPhones are manufactured in China. But because of that brand image, they have much more strict manufacturing policies and procedures. What I mean by Chinese solar panel is a Chinese branded panel. Those panels have been known to not match the specs they are described with and the quality is poor.

@@JohnnyNJones listen to Yeonmi Park’s story. China has an open sex slave policy, where they traffic women from North Korea. We support their godless agenda every time we buy something from China. Doesn’t matter if they put a new sticker on it when it gets here. Now to be fair I am making this comment on an iPhone. There is no escaping China products but awareness is key. And when they give us American options, we should take them. Or you could vote for Trump and bring manufacturing back to America.

We only got a few sprinkles from this system up here in South Bend Indiana. Seems like you are way out in the sticks if you can't get anyone local on your radio. Oh, there’s plenty of locals on there usually, it’s just everyone around us was without power. Over 1 million people were without power, and the Internet was down as well. I guess not too many people had mobile radios. Which makes sense because most of the people around here use base stations with linears. And damn that’s cold, it surprises me that those temperatures exist among developed areas. But I have heard tale of a few countries that deal with 70 below zero. Which I cannot fathom.

Having a reliable radio and a portable antenna, especially in emergencies, is always a smart idea. During this recent storm, I was able to receive real-time updates from stations in the USA and even assisted by relaying important messages for them to friends and family in the USA from Canada. In times of crisis, some ham operators monitor CB and other civilian frequencies to help relay vital communications. Just wanted to share that, and I’m glad to hear you're safe!

Yes, I’d like to be personally involved in RACES. We have a crew together and we’re trying to help people with food, water and removing debris. I’m sending up a 2 meter and CB with them. I think the CB is going to be useful on the highways for reporting traffic conditions or listening for reports of crumbling roads. The 2 m hopefully can be hooked up to a repeater if one is still active in that area to hopefully help some of these people locate some family members. And thank you I’m very glad I’m safe. Unfortunately a lot of people are not so I gotta do the best to help out 👍

I was a store manager at Blockbuster Video and luckily, I had some disk resurfacing training prior. I got my JFJ Easy Pro and read the directions, and applying some common sense and the laws of thermal dynamics, I quickly tossed the directions. Yes, water is the key, yes the pads suck and yes, if ran long enough, this machine will melt disks. Take some sandpaper and sand a spot of wood for two minutes, then feel how warm it is. This heat WILL melt plastic disks.

I knew how to add the talk back for a long long time. But I only added it to CB radios That I added Echo boards to. It helps to set to the way you want it to sounds. Otherwise you have no idea what a sounds like until someone on the air says, That sounds horrible. And then tries to explain how it sounds. And will often just confuse you. So adding talk back solves the issue. And I have always added a switch because once it is setup, then I never ever turned it on again.

@@sshooter546 I wasn’t using a monopole. I was using a dipole, both ends need to be equivalently long. Of course it’s not really acting as a dipole in this case because my signal is not balanced. Sort of like how you can put a mag mount on a car it’s not grounded. It just has enough of a ground plane to work. If you’re interested in that kind of stuff, I recommend getting the ARRL technician manual and working from there. Because what you’re asking is something that needs to be explained, mathematically, or at least in an abstract analogous form. The best way I can put it right now is that in a dipole your signal just needs enough room to bounce off the other side of the dipole instead of bouncing off the ground. If I took that dipole and buried half of it in the ground then I would have a ground mounted monopole In fact, if the ground was wet and saturated enough, I wouldn’t even need the other side of that dipole I could use the ground itself as the other side. Sorry, I can’t be more of help but it’s a technical idea.
