Zeroth, avoid water crossings unless absolutely necessary. First, know the wading depth of your vehicle, where your air intake is, and let your vehicle cool down. Second, walk the obstacle to know how deep it is, and how fast the water is flowing. Watch out for snakes, hippos and crocodiles. Third, drive in slowly, preferrably in low range 2nd gear (or HR 1st), then gather speed to create a bow wave in front.

Do they not have road traffic workers to shut down roads and divert traffic in times of flood in the UK?
@EleanorPeterson3 ай бұрын
Yes, but we also have drivers who couldn't give a toss about diversion signs and barriers and who ignore good advice in order to try to get where they want to go more quickly. They'll probably have done the flooded route a few times before, got away with it, and we're seeing them trying their luck for the last time. Floods are one thing, but the fords featured are ancient ways left open deliberately to allow the local farmers to move vehicles and livestock at their discretion. The fords aren't updated to bridges and the streams aren't buried in culverts for all sorts of reasons: financial, historical, for countryside management purposes, for the preservation of ancient water meadows, to protect rare flora or fauna, or simply because the local residents don't want things to change. Drivers know the risks and take full responsibility for their actions. It can be painful to watch, but that's life.

@sha1om3 ай бұрын
@@Brian-om2hh That's what I'm saying. Almost no passenger cars in the USA have diesel engines; basically large vans and pickup trucks, and very few of those. VW was the only major manufacturer selling diesels in small cars, and they got caught cheating on emissions with them (the cars were programmed to detect when it was being plugged into an emissions tester, and temporarily detuned the engine) and most of those got bought back. In 1978 GM introduced some small diesels based on beefed up car blocks, but they sucked so mightily that nobody bought them and it scared them off ever after. I wish they'd sell more of them here; my dream car would have been the VW Touareg with the 10 cylinder Diesel, but that was a $14,000 option over and above the cost of the car itself, and they didn't sell too many of them.
